Ireland Anyone?

It's a ways off yet, but I'm moving to Ireland in the Spring of next year and was wondering if there are any Irish (or American-Irish) Low Carbers around up for a gathering/roast? Or if anyone had any tips on where to purchase LC items in the Emerald Isle.

I know there are heaps of Health Food stores over there, but not sure the LC thing has caught on yet.

Ireland

Hi Mile High:

I don't live in Ireland but I've been there 4 times and just spent 3 weeks there last month. I rented a house so I cooked a bit of the time. I personally didn't see any low carb items in the grocery stores, but I was in County Mayo. Maybe in the bigger cities like Dublin you might have more luck. What county are you moving to? What's making you move? Isn't it hard to get work there if you're not an Irish Citizen?

Hi Mo!

I'll be living in County Meath. When backpacking through Europe in early '02, I met someone. And well, here we are a year later, engaged.

I don't think it'll be too hard to get work over there once I'm married to an Irish citizen. His SIL is German, and she's done fine. The firm I currently work for has an office there so maybe I can get a transfer. We shall see.

So, when I get over there it'll be back to LC basics, which is prob'ly a good thing!

Congratulations on your engagement. I just spend a few days in Co. Offally with my SIL. I think that's near West Meath. I hope you have a great life there. We had such good weather last month, I almost didn't know I was in Ireland! Good luck with everything.

LC Items in Ireland

Congrats, Mile High, on your upcoming move to my favorite country. I just got back from six weeks there and found the restaurant food great compared to the old days...except for the usual fries and potatoes on every offering of every menu! However, these days the restaurants are very willing to substitute salad for the spuds. And, since I have been going over nearly every year since childhood, I can honestly tell you the salads are a million times better than they used be. More like our good ol' California salad greens. Regrettably, though, they still are heavy on the use of canned corn, peas. Ask for and get broccoli and cauliflower or other low-glycemic vegs at the better restaurants.

I could find no LC products other than the sugar free candies and some cookies at Boots in Dublin. They do have a sucralose-based sweetener, so you can find some nonaspartame items. I had packed a load of Atkins shakes and Advantage bars (Customs loved me in LA), which really helped when I was tempted by their mile-long candy aisles in stores or the ice cream stands at every shop and event. But it will be a back-to-the-basics for you...few if any of the luxury LC products so readily available here.

The grocery stores have plenty of fresh, wonderful vegetables and the meats, fish, eggs and butter are to die for, so cooking at home will not be a problem.

I'm considering moving overseas myself for a while...still considering. Fortunately, I have dual citizenship so can work in any EEC country. Perhaps we'll meet and start an Atkins or Low-Carb group there. Everyone I met had heard of it, but a lot of people had misconceptions about this way of life and hadn't read the books thoroughly.

Anyway, best of luck!

Jan

Hi Jan!

Thanx for the great info. I'm pretty excited! And I'm hoping to convince my future Hubby to do this WOL with me. He's not overweight (aside from his guinness tummy), but I think it'd be good for both of us.

I kinda figured it'd be a back-to-basics situation for me, until mom comes to visit with my huge list of things.

We'll have to keep in touch in case u do move over there we'll have to swap info./recipes/and encouragement!

Thanx Again!
