i sent DF to the shops for cream and eggs etc and he bought elmlea, which is like frankencream - reduced fat, higher carbs, added sugar. i threw it away.
ohhh clotted cream, that stuff is to die for.

Paula that Elmlea is pure crap, have you SEEN the ingredients list? I mean, it lasts for MONTHS after you buy it. I caught a pensioner buying some in Morissons once and gave her a lengthy lecture as to how bad it was she ended up buying a pot of double cream instead.

Paula I used to eat around 1500ish calories which was around 100g protein, 120g fat and 20g carbs, that said it wasn't quite enough for me as I was exercising as well but thats how my percentages broke down. I used to aim for around 25% protein

If I were you, particularly because you were on kimkins before, I would consider getting into weights, it will help undo some of the damage.

Oh and my secret for keeping the fat up was making a yummy low carb cheesecake

Paula I just read back that you were 6 ft? I would eat more calories then 1600 and also do weights as well.

I got all the way down to 55kg on 1500 ish and I am only 161.5cm, a lot shorter then you!

Just want to mention for those that are unaware that the protein in pork rinds is an undigestible protein -- collagen I believe. If you look closely at the label, you should notice that tho the nutrition stats list X amount of protein, there is usually also a disclaimer that reads: "not a significant source of protein." This is true for the microwavable protein rinds I have here even tho they list 23 grams of protein per serving.

Not sure, then, how one should account for these in the ratios. . . .

Paula, at your height, I think that you are within 20 pounds of your goal. Keep in mind that weight loss slows when you are close to your goal like that. I know it's been said already, but please don't go back to Kimkins. You know it fails because you gained weight after you went off of it. Please lose it slowly and healthfully.

ETA: I'm so jealous of you U.K. girls and the wonderful cream you can get! We don't get anything even close to it here!

You guys have me wanting to run down to our local international gourmet grocery and get some of that Devonshire cream now!! I couldn't figure out how to eat it though, since I can't have scones (which I ADORE!! And miss desperately BTW)

What can you eat it with if you're low carbing?

I got some lovely crème fraîche in the organic dairy section at Publix yesterday mixed it in with my lowfat Fage ('cuz they were out of full-fat ) and a few sliced strawberries.

Going back to the BMR calculations, at 6' and 206 lbs, 23 y/o female's BMR is about 1781. Don't forget to factor in activity level, according to the Harris Benedict equation:
  • If you are sedentary (little or no exercise) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.2
  • If you are lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.375
  • If you are moderatetely active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.55
  • If you are very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.725
  • If you are extra active (very hard exercise/sports & physical job or 2x training) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.9
So if you start with 1781 and are moderately active, that actually brings you up to 2760 to maintain your current weight, chop off 500/day to lose a pound a week. But...

I want one!!! I'm almost through Good Calories, Bad Calories, and it's just not as simple as calories in/calories out. There's a lot of info in there about starvation and semi-starvation diets, and why they don't work.

Hey Paula!! How are you doing? I'm sorry to hear you are struggling. I have been too. I can't seem to stick with it for more than a couple of weeks at a time, and I'm not even as busy as you are. Just got caught up on Cleo's losing 24 lbs and that has made me feel inspired to get going again. Hang in there and keep in touch here because so many people here can help you.

Hi Paula!
I quit smoking last March (after 20+ years) and my weight went up but settled back down. My doc said that your metabolism and hormones shift around when you quit and you retain a lot of water initially. Also, I don't know about the drug you are on, but alot of the drugs make you retain water as well- (when I stopped mine, the weight started to come off then). So between the Kimkins diet and the quitting smoking, you are probably going through a metabolism shift. It will change though. One day, out of the blue, I started losing weight doing the exact same thing I did before. I also have to say, I am now considerably thinner than I was when I was a smoker -- so don't give up!! As for the cream, try substituting an Atkins Vanilla shake. I switched from half and half to that in my coffee and that made a big difference in calories and carbs. It doesn't taste as good, but it did work.
