Lauren, thanks for sharing your story and a medical perspective in dieting. I agree, there's no quick way to find the best diet. It took me many years of floundered quite a bit before finding the woe that works best for me. When all the low carb stuff started coming into the supermarkets and restaurants I had been so jaded from regular diets I made the mistake of writing it off as a fad for the longest time.

Now that I'm more experienced I'd never do that again, but I still find that I have to be very careful and examine the labels fully as the food manufacturers and restaurants are really just capitalizing on this. Laura (wildangel6) just posted a link to a great article about how would be customers of KK aren't really curious because they aren't willing to do the work to find out more about how to do the diet properly. It's a great point and I'm inclined to agree. There's no quick fix, and as Jimmy Moore puts it, people need to take charge of their own health if they want to lose weight and be healthy.

OT for a moment -- Tee Pee Toes is a keeper, too!

I didn't grieve because I was so sick and close to dying when I was put on the diet, that I was happy to find that I had so much to eat. I think a lot of people view lowcarb this way as well.
I have a problem with the idea of fasting because of my illness. I was so afraid to eat, because everything made me have diarrhea and cramps. My lowest weight was 98 pounds. I used to sit at the table and cry because I was so hungry and yet knew that something in food was making me sick. I just didn't know what it was. Everyone thought I was ED or crazy. I was so happy to be told to eat certain foods that I tossed my narcotics out and flushed them. Then I went through withdrawal....a picnic compared to starvation.
I read that Detox thread and knowing that she probably was still heavy, but egging those others on, made me sick to my stomach. I went into medicine to change the way doctors treat their patients and their family. I have been talked down to by many...mostly male docs. I promised myself that I would never treat anyone the way I was treated.
Lauren
I'd give my right arm to have a doctor like you. I had IBS and Yeast overgrowth. The "Doctors" told me I couldn't have the "yeast" problem. That I had to have Aids, Be a bad diabetic or have Cancer. They didn't know what was causing all my problems, but it couldn't be that.
Also, the IBS? I found if I didn't eat, I didn't have pain. So, that started me on my lowcarb journey. I had to find out things for myself and treat myself. The only things the doctors did was make it worse. I was sick and tired of being "sick and tired". I would go from being a little over weight to being really underweight.

Thank God, for low carb.

Margi,
You're right it's an individual thing...what works for you, works for you. I was fooled by junk science about Atkins and believed the stuff about kidney damage, etc. But I went looking, thanks to Jimmy's site I found the real science and have an inch and a half binder of articles supporting lowcarb and ketogenic diets. That got me reading books and well here I am.

Tooter I know what you mean about being sick and tired. I was exhausted and working full time...sick every two hours, cried myself to sleep and wished I could die in my sleep.
Gad it was awful..anytime someone offers me a non-GF item I remember that feeling and I have no trouble turning it down. Lowcarb has given me back my energy levels..I feel like a teenager..(48 in three weeks) and I sleep way better.
I have seen some people complain of loss of energy, but that didn't happen to me.
I work 12-13 hour days and take care of my DH and family stuff. Happy Happy Happy.

Apples also make me hungry.
I LOVE oatmeal, but will not have it again. My doctor says it's one of the worst things we can eat. Apples, on the other hand, give me cravings and make me binge. A trigger food for sure.

The Brain Trust Program is on my wish list at Amazon. I have not heard of Dr. Briffa's book. I'm still reading Gary Taubes' book and also want to read Barry Groves' latest. It's hard to keep up with it all.

Isn't it interesting how someone as shy as she claims to be, could go door to door selling Avon? and even recruit more folks to sell Avon?

I just got Dr. Rob Thompson's "The Glycemic Load Diet", which seems to take the original Atkins one step further. Scientists have learned a lot about what makes us obese since Dr. Atkins wrote DADR '72.

She often posted that she entered things on Fitday when people were inquiring about how many carbs/calories were in things. My suspicion is that she was posting about the EVIL of drinking. She often preached against it, despite her intimate relationship with Cap'n Morgan! Shows you how hypocritical she is. I think she's one of those "do as I say, not as I do" types! But I digress.......she used Fitday to figure out the carb/calorie levels, but never figured out that you can delete them after you get the info.
