Very low calorie diet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Very low calorie diet
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Very low calorie diet (VLCD) is a diet with very or extremely low calorie consumption per day. It is defined medically as a diet of 800 kilocalories per day or less. VLCDs are formulated, nutritionally complete, liquid meals containing 3350 kJ (800 kcal) or less per day. VLCDs also contain the recommended daily requirements for vitamins, minerals, trace elements, fatty acids and protein. The VLCD products are usually a powder which is mixed with water, juice or other low calorie liquid. "These are physician preparations....not lean chicken and a few sheds of lettuce" My comment

A VLCD diet is aimed primarily for severely or morbidly obese adults who must lose significant amounts of weight quickly, in order to live. It is also for those individuals who wish to lose some of their weight as rapidly as possible in a safe manner. Because of the extremely low calories per day, a VLCD diet cannot be used by children no matter how obese. The average weight loss on the VLCD program is in the range of 3 to 5 pounds per week, but it is to be remembered that at first you only lose excess liquid from your body.

A VLCD should never be undertaken without medical supervision.

Health benefits
A 1997 study concludes that the short-term use of a VLCD is very effective in rapidly improving glycaemic control and promoting substantial weight loss in obese patients with Type 2 diabetes. Moreover, a VLCD increases insulin sensitivity and reduces the substrate for gluconeogenesis. Thus VLCD treatment may improve glycaemic control more than calorie restriction alone.[1]

Adverse effects
The risk of gallbladder disease is greatly increased for individuals following a VLCD. [2]

A slowing of one's metabolism can occur as your body adapts so the brain and central nervous system, as well as other bodily systems, will cease to work efficiently.

The body will break down fat, but it will also break down muscle and other lean body tissue which can be very dangerous.

An imbalance in minerals and electrolytes can occur. Osteoporosis can be another danger, especially for women as can anaemia (a lack of iron in the blood). If taken to extremes, women can find that menstruation (periods) becomes irregular or stops altogether. A lack of serotonin in the brain can lead to clinical depression. The lack of essential nutrients on a very low calorie diet leads to a deterioration in the condition of hair and nails.

Another potential side effect is constipation (depends on the fibre content of the diet).[3]

Gout is nothing to fool around with, especially while on a high protein diet. This guy DOES need to get to a doctor, and not the kind that plays one on the Internet.

Welcome Dr. Mark,
So where do you stand with the weight thing? Were you ever heavy, have you ever lost a ton of weight? Have you ever yo-yo ed and gained and lost a ton of weight back and forth? And exercise... do you? how, where, when, and why? What is your take on kimkins, k/e, bootcamp, cycling?
I'm ok with the degrees, just want to know where you stand on the issues of fat, and weightloss.
Thanks,

Inquiring minds want to know...

And don't even get me started on her Diet Review Rebuttal....

It worked for me so it has to be good? Bad people who never tried it are the ones that are bad mouthing it. That was the basis of her whole rebuttal. No scientific evidence or published studies, just the personal testimonial of the PR director, and a description of how happy and positive the forums are. That says NOTHING about the diet. Her review is a review of the entire controversy and not the actual diet.

Dr. Mark ~~ I'm COLD! 1 Day ago
Is there a relation between eating low carb and being cold?? I am cold all of the time. FREEZING! My hubby says it's because I've lost all of my fluff and don't have the built in blanket anymore.....?? I have to keep my little electric heater on at work under my desk...I'm THAT cold!

Any thoughts??

Move to Florida.

Just kidding!

One of the consequenses of losing weight many times is a drop in blood pressure and natural insulation

The periphery (hands and feet) can tend to get a little cold when not in use (those darn desk jobs!)

I do not know your workout program or if you are using one but you may want to start.

You muscles to two primary things - provide locomotion and heat.

A simple 15 minutes of muscle training every other day would be sufficient to make a change in your body and muscle mass. Muscle, simply put, burns more calories at rest and keeps you warm.

Now, another way is to go at it from an eastern approach. You can add a few foods that produce heat in the body. This does not mean they are hot to the taste always, it just means that turn up your own furnace..
Cinnamon
Pineapple
Ginger
red or green pepper
black pepper
garlic
shrimp (yes, make him buy you shrimp)
lamb

Just a few ideas.
Dr. Mark

Yum yum! I'm adding pineapple to my kimkins diet!!! I Love Pineapple! Maybe I'll ask if a pinacolada is ok to have too

Ok on the 800 calorie thing....isn't anyone at kk confused? Why aren't they saying, "hey why are we supposed to eat a minimum of 800 cals if we still have fat on our bodies? Didn't Kimmer lose her weight on much less than that? She said it was perfectly healthy."

Why isn't anyone saying that? It seems to me that if the members were clueless about the controversy, they would innocently ask those questions. Now it just looks like everyone is plugging their ears (lalalalala) and ignoring the issues.

I actually spent my whole therapy session today talking about Kimmer. My therapist said..ummmm..you have to eat and exercize and drink water.

Most people (especially the ones with no weight problem) can't believe I fell for heidy's truck load of crap. I guess deep down I knew it wasn't right because I did it secretly. I didn't even tell my husband because I knew he would flip.

Looking back I guess desperation blinded me but what's up with the people who have been shown all of this evidence and STILL believe?

WOW!!!!
How about the little tip of- GO TO YOUR PHYSICIAN TO HAVE YOUR THYROID CHECKED BECAUSE HYPOTHYROIDISM COULD BE THE CAUSE.

Regardless of this diet, which we know harms the thyroid, and the woman is on a diet board so one would assume weight gain is an issue.
The person is cold, excess weight and female...I would think the thyroid function should be checked. I am not a Doctor of Oriental Medicine though so maybe that is my problem and the ginger will help.

ETA- I see carolyn beat me to that theory.

Nyet! It is from a slow down in the metabolism from too low calories and/or not enough protein. It isn't from "less insulation".

Uhuh...

From a reputable site that (I bet) has done research and can back it up with links:

Quote:
Some people are just naturally more sensitive to warmth or cold than other people. If it's not a new problem, there's probably nothing wrong," says Peter Sigmann, M.D., an associate professor of internal medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. "On the other hand, if it is a new problem, it could be a sign of anemia or a thyroid disorder."

But I do have some good news for you all. There is a pic of Fitness Guru posted on the site. Too bad she's wearing a mask but I bet we can all still guess who it is! (wink, wink)
