At 58 yrs and 300 lbs I started Dr. Atkins WOE,and 80 lbs fell off in the next year w/o too much effort. Then nutritional testing revealed severe allergies to wheat, rice, corn and more exotic grains like amaranth. It confirmed also that I was allergic to every component of cow milk, not just lactose. Too much cheese or cream and I have diverticulitis show up. Had my first attack the first year of eating this LC, and it was ugly. But previously I'd suffered for years from ulcers (bleeding at that), very loose bowels (sorry, TMI), and all that they imply. So I WAS exhibiting signs of celiac w/o realizing it. Several of my siblings also can't handle milk or grain products. We all have developed serious allergy problems, heart troubles and weight problems. There are also the mental side effects showing up, as celiacs are more apt to be schizoid as they age. Several of the next generation suffer from bipolar, diagnosed and otherwise.
And I blabbed all this to show you, Mommy, that allergies and celiac may be at the root of your weight woes. Please ask your doctor to test you. FWIW, I was allergy tested way back when , but not for celiac.
Wow, I had no idea that it could lead, or result in, bipolar and more. If you have a problem with wheat does it ever result in sinus troubles, dizziness?

Has anyone else been bothered by nosebleeds? I've never had them in my life, but keep having them. I'm trying to isolate what may be causing them since it isn't what I first thought it might be. I can't imagine what would cause it on the diet, unless I'm missing some vitamin or mineral
First be sure to talk to your doc about them.
I haven't had nose bleeds. Are you tracking your food in fitday? If so, click on reports/nutrition and see what you vitamin K intake has been like. Vitamin K is what we need for blood clotting. I wasn't getting enough of it on KK until I found that a cup of baby spinach would give me a full days worth so I made sure to eat spinach every day. I don't know that this is it but it sure couldn't hurt to check it out.
My son gets nose bleeds a lot. ENT said they could cauterize his nose to make them stop.

It might now, but now I eat so little wheat (mostly as breaded stuff when I eat out, and that which I can't remove) that I'd be afraid to test it. My reactions to allergens are both different and more subtle than most people's. I have basically sworn off wheat for life.

Trust me sometimes it can work in one's favor. I know I missed some of the heated discussions and I actually was glad I put my two cents in the piggy bank that go around.

Hi Everyone,
Ok this is the first time I have even bothered to post on this subject about what is all going on.....I have been a member since Aug 06 and I have found this place to be a really nice plave full of fun and happy supportive people..... In my veiw what happened was this.......
This diet works and it is great for so many of us to finally see the scales move after having tried other diets rah rah rah......what I think happened was that it got very competitive in the challenge forums and people, inclucing myself did some stupid stuff, such as....
egg white only challenges and the likes......now because I have half a brain, I knew full well this wasnt a healthy thing to do for any length of time, and I could only ever do it for a couple of days.......these people who are all freaking out and doing write ups and what not, and trust me I have read hours and hours on what is going on.....they are the ones who took things to the extremes, this in my mind, was not Kimmers doing's.....she did not hold a gun to anyones head and say EAT ONLY EGG WHITES LOL.....if a person is that brain dead, well heck then they can only blame there selves......no matter what diet we choose to follow if you take it to the extreme it will corse porblems.....ie: cabbage soup diet for an example.....says you can eat as much soup as you like.....but say you are brain dead and only eat one bowl a day cause you want to lose faster and then after a month of doing this your hair falls out ....DA DA DAR BIG BRIGHT LIGHT...........
Because I have been around for over a year here and watched and lurked, came and went, I just find it so dam funny watching Becky and the likes all doing what they are doing now......they were the ones telling people what to eat etc.....to me they are straight out hypercrites ( cant spell LOL) and when the s**t started to hit the fan over pictures of Kimmer and stuff ( and by the way I couldnt give a toss either way wether or not that is her, cause for me this diet works and thats the bottom line) they ran like the wind for the high country...........well what are they gonna do now.....you watch I bet anything they will start there on sites and just do a copy cat type deal.....its a joke...............I have had the emails and blar blar what not to, and they can pretty much stuff it where the sun dont shine as far as I am concerned........all a bunch of liars and I say what comes round goes round.........and for anyone with concerns.......get a grip and use your brains.....you can not live on egg whites alone, you can not live on 500 cals a day for months on end, that is just stupid and will make you sick...........do as I do, and be half pie smart.........I'll go like 500 cals for maybe a day, then the next day I will got to 1000 cals and I zig zag it, dont get obsessed with the scales........ good luck to you all......and Kimmer I still think your OK...I dont care one way or the other what others are saying, I am working with FACTS here....using myself as living breathing PROOF...........

Happy dieting to you all
Well, isn't that speshul?

I am close to someone with bipolar disorder so this interested me.

From the celiac central.org site:

Ludvigsson and colleagues suggested that the positive association between celiac disease and subsequent depression might be due to "malnutrition or active bowel inflammation in individuals with celiac disease." For example, folate deficiency is implicated in both celiac disease and depression. The team noted that red cell folate levels were significantly lower in people with depression than those with bipolar disorder, potentially explaining why celiac disease is associated with subsequent depression but not bipolar disorder. Tryptophan levels, which were reduced in patients with celiac disease and those with depression, might also explain the association between the conditions.

Related Diseases | National Foundation for Celiac Awareness

I've read countless books on bipolar. I'm not a psychiatrist, but I play one on t.v. LOL

Kimkins

Has anyone seen slamboard with all the latest pictures of Heidi (aka Kimmer)? Several years ago, I posted a lot on LC friends under the name of DaisyattheBeach and I remember VERY CLEARLY getting into several small battles with Mizzzzzz Kimmer regarding her suicidal woe notions and her strong encouragement in others who were showing bigger mental food issues than just over-eating. Thank the Lord that she is being slowed down. I wish I could say STOPPED, but I will happily settle for slowed down---she's not so dangerous that way!!

Excuse me but the poster must also consider that they are stating that Kimmer is stupid and not "half pie smart" as well....or is that a twinkie short in a bakers dozen or whatever....just insert pastry of one's choice.

But the members that were doing the low calories got this "stupid" thinking from the founder of the diet and her claimed success.
The reasoning that Kimmer gives over and over again of why the 500 calories a day is due to the excess body fat. It actually makes sense at the time. Here it is from a newsletter that Kimkins generated-
Holy Crap!! I couldn't find that and knew I had read it. So glad you had that!
EXACTLY!! It's how SHE said to do it!!

Where is everybody? I know the Woman's World brought in a lot of newbies, but where are the staples? I cannot find anything with posters whose name I recognize...... Then I saw SingingLass's sticky about the new moderators and no one was on them I knew. Littlebit, Christin, and about 5 others are poof gone.. Wassup? I am not on often or for long but clearly something is up?
That's proof right there that there really are members who don't have any idea of what's going on. I hope she gets some answers and figures out it's not worth staying.

Wow, I am sorry to read about all the side-effects of those with celiac disease. It would definitely be interesting for ex-kimkins members to make note of what symptoms improved while doing the diet. Since kimkins has no wheat, rye and barley it would be a good idea as SMP suggested to get tested if someone started to have symptoms reappear after stopping Kimkins. Also the lack of diary in the kimkins diet could have also improved some symptoms in members that have diary allergens and not even know it.

Very interesting!

edited-to correct spelling of allergens...I had spelled it "allergans" which is the name of the company that makes great eye drops not the term used for something that causes allergies......
