Not just water weight gain....WATER WEIGHT GAIN!!!

Hi Everyone! First post here.

Quick introduction: I'm an almost empty-nester with way too many pets and a husband with a bad heart, who I try to scare regularly in the middle of the night. I started kimkins on 6/27 and, even with some major cheats (fabulous sushi buffet here on Thursday nights) I'm very happy with my progress.

I have a question for y'all. About two weeks ago I weigh in at 300 even. This is all fine and dandy, and I look forward to twoderland, but I realize I probably won't hit it for a while because evil TOM is due, which always causes severe water retention for me.

btw - I must mention how long it took me to realize what TOM stood for. I kept wondering who this Tom guy was you all seemed to dislike so much....

Anyways...I do start the premenstrual puff as expected, but much worse than usual. I couldn't make a fist, and my joints really ached! The next morning I weigh in at 304, and by the time about 6pm rolls around I'm at 309. I was griping so much about the pain and discomfort that my husband gave me one of his, oh what are they called....let's say water pills.

When my husband's heart condition was first diagnosed and he was prescribed these pills, the doctor told him he would lose 10lbs of water weight in a week. I lost 10lbs overnight. Next morning I was 299. 10lbs of water gone in less than 8 hours. Wow. I figured I was just retaining a bit more than usual because of the dietary switch and not to panic.

Now, two weeks later, TOM not involved at all, I do almost the same thing. I shoot up to 303, take a pill, down to 294.4 by the next morning.

So...it could still be hormone related being mid-month and all, but somethings gotta give here. Retaining that much water is PAINFUL! A recent trip to the doctor diagnosed me as a bit anemic, and I was told to up my salt intake, but otherwise I'm healthy.

My question is, and sorry I took so long to get around to it....has anyone else ever had this happen, and does anyone have any suggestions for a more natural way to control this? Don't say salt, my salt intake was awesomely low right before both episodes. As a matter of fact I'm UPPING my salt now to see if that helps. Maybe my kidneys are refusing to function without a proper salt balance.

I have no ideas. I'd be thrilled to hear any anyone else has.

I have the same problem with water retention and today my feet are so bad they are twice the size of my normal size. It is not sodium related at all for me. Strictly hormonal. I have to go get some testing done this month before they will prescribe ANYthing, including a water pill. I tried the over the counter diuretics and they do nothing for me at all.

I get nauseous and the pain from the joint inflammation is undescribable. I have fibromyalgia and the two combined is nearly enough to keep me in bed for days and I hold on to the walls just to make my way to the bathroom and back to bed.

Increasing salt...... hmm.. never thought of that. White boiled or steamed rice and rice water are helpful, but I don't eat them often because of the carbs. I will have some today though. I'm miserable.

Are you drinking enough water? My sinlaw can retain 10 pounds of water easily..She is always on lasix. You might need that daily, too. Ask your doctor.

When I have the swelling issues, the more water I drink the worse it gets. I've had kidney function testing done recently and it all came back good so even my doctor is puzzled. My doctor told me that Lasix will be a last resort, it is hard on the kidneys and you will become dependant on it.

My sinlaw's condition is really wierd. She has to take it everyday..She is not very heavy, but her tissues retain water..and the dr. doesn't want her to drink much water. When she takes the lasix, sometimes she "goes" all morning and sometimes she doesn't at all..Yup..
It's better not to "go there"..I have heard that Taurine is good for water retention. I think
Dr. A. recommended it to his patients.

Things that help fight inflammation (and water retention)...

• Drink more water
• Take fish oil (Omega 3's)
• Cinnamon (up to 1/4 tsp per day)

Dr. Atkins had some recommendations in his book and I believe Asparagus Tablets may have been one of them. Good luck on finding the cause...and solution...of this water retention....sounds like a pain!

My water intake is usually 60-100 ounces a day, which is about as much as I can handle. Both times I blew up like a water balloon I stopped drinking tho...it wasn't going anywhere, and the more I drank the worse I felt!

I've been checked out recently enough for me to not worry about it being a serious health problem. I'm afraid if I go to my doc and say "I started this diet and have had issues with retaining water since then" his wise and sage suggestion would be to get off the diet. I could be wrong, but I'm not ready to spend the money to find out.

I take 1 tsp of flax seed oil a day...I thought I got my good fatty acids from that. Am I wrong? I hate cinnamon, but I have some tablets around here somewhere I could try. Bleh. Bleh bleh.

I saw a recommendation for asparagus and parsley tablets in another thread. I'd be willing to give those a go as soon as I find them. I'd really rather not 'go there' with prescription pills...even if it ended up being one every two weeks. A lifetime dependency on parsley...I could live with that!

So far today I have not blown up like a balloon. I've also been low on water intake...bad me. I've just eaten some salty food and drank a 33oz bottle of wally world peach flavored water. We'll see if I make it through the night!

Swelling is down for me today. It was really bad yesterday though. I had crossed one foot over the other while watching TV and reading a book and when I uncrossed them one of my kids screamed out "MOM!!!! What happened to your foot???".... I must admit, it looked pretty gross, like someone had chunked out a big crater. It took awhile for it to fill out again and get as puffy as the rest of my foot.

I don't want the prescription routine either. My health insurance situation is not stable and I do not want to be dependant on meds. I'm going to check out the parsley tablet idea since I hate parsley and so I couldn't ever eat enough of it to benefit from it.

Thanks for the thread. I hope you feel better soon. I guess that's one thing I can be grateful for is that this seems to go and come. I have a friend who has something wrong with her and her swelling doesn't go away even with medications. And her feet look like they hurt so bad... swelling out and over the tops of her shoes. I wear alot of sandals and stylish flip flop shoes because I've been trapped inside of my shoes one too many times. Fashion isn't worth the price I pay if I start swelling.

The water weight swelling you have is called pitting and it is quite serious and can be dangerous. Liver issues can also make you retain water. You seriously need to go for a checkup and bloodwork to see if your liver is functioning properly and that your blood sugar is not high. I am going for a biliary tree liver ultrasound tomorrow because the only symptom I had was swollen legs & my doc did some blood tests and found my liver enzymes were elevated. Don't play around with your health-especially if you have kids, you want to be around and healthy for them don't you!

Yeah, I know, thank for your concerned post. Trouble is, the doc is fully aware of how bad this is. We already did all the bloodwork and nothing appears wrong. My sugars are actually running lower than normal for me, and no liver-kidney-or heart issues. The doc is puzzled.

Hello fellow water retainer!

I retain water like a fiend! This started happening when I was about 28 years old. I have found that the only thing that helps is a low carbohydrate diet coupled with exercise, water AND a diuretic every day. My doctor perscribed them after we went through every test under the sun and there was NOTHING wrong with me. My only health problem is that I have PCOS. My doctor feels that it is the weight I carry that causes this (I'm 286lbs). I found that when I'm around 260, the swelling subsides. Hot and humid weather also makes the problem worse (I only take my diuretics in the summer months)...

I'm hoping to be at 260 by the end of October so I don't have to suffer with swelling next summer.

I hope it gets better for you.....

Update:

My water issue worsened over the last few days. I called and told the doctor that I began to have shortness of breath and pain, redness in my legs where the skin is so tight from the fluid. It's so hot here and humid it's hard for everyone to breathe, it wasn't helping at all. The doctor called in a prescription for Lasix (hate that stuff but I need relief) and I go for an EKG on Monday. We have done them before, but he wants a new one.

Melle's Sweetheart - Welcome fellow water retainer! I'm hoping this is a reaction to my weight and the heat. Both will go away in time. I'm upping my salt and water intake, and adding lots of parsley to my diet. We'll see if I have another round of this when TOM comes around again.

Silver Spice - Wow. You win! I'm complaining about two episodes that lasted about a day each, but it sounds like you live with this every day. Not fun, not fun at all. I hope the doc finds something simple and easy to fix!

For the record: my husband had/has the 'pitting' type of swelling. It was the first symptom that alerted the doctor to his heart condition. You could poke him and he would stay poked for a scary long time. My swelling was very different. I poofed right back out instantly. I anxiously await next TOM to see what happens. Bleh.

It took about a week for the lasix to really get rid of my husband's extra water weight. Hang in there! It kicking the water out of my system so fast was unusual.

Here's wishing you a nice, tight heart muscle, and an ejection fraction of 60+!

Hi Tribbles-
Please let your doc know that you are doing this diet... your health is TOO IMPORTANT to not let your doctor know all the information he needs for diagnosing this problem!

Well, turns out my problem was a severe potassium shortage. Whooda thought? It makes sense, tho. Every time I blew up and took one of dh's diuretics I also took a bunch of potassium with it, so I was good for another week or two before my body really started screaming.

Anyway...I am now taking more potassium daily than I ever thought was safe (see your own doc for a good amount for you) and I am feeling much better in general, not just bloaty-wise. I would highly recommend anyone feeling drug out on a low carb diet to get their potassium checked. I thought I was keeping up well with mine, but I wasn't even close!

Then again, my husband...who takes diuretics daily...never takes potassium and his level (which gets checked often) is always fine. Go figure.

My echocardiogram and ekg both came back fine!!!!! Whew~~... still no idea why I am swelling so much, but they upped my Lasix to 40mg, twice a day and potassium supplement.

Hopefully this will relieve the problem while we keep on the hunt for the cause.

Take care of yourselves everyone!
