How many calories for a Male?

Hey All,

I tried Kimkins a while back (end of May) but ended up in the hospital with an Ulcer (not kimkins fault) so I only was able to try it for a couple days. After coming out of the Hospital I thought I would do Atkins and not restrict myself too much. I am losing weight but it sure seems slow for how big I am. I am seeing myself struggle over a 1-2 pound loss every week and sometimes it takes a week and a half to lose anything. I will see 5 pound drops after tennis or basketball but the next day I gain it back. I am really confused because my calories are never more than 1400-1500. I would just assume with my calorie intake and aggressive sports activities I would see continous losses almost daily. Here is a sample Menu.

B - Flax Meal Muffin w/coconut oil
S - Sometimes a Whey Protein Shake before Tennis
L - Chicken or Pork Chops with salad or green beans. (2 carb ranch salad dressing)
S - Handful of Almonds or Sunflower Seeds (1 serving) or Beef Jerky
D - Pretty much the same as lunch. Once and a while i'll have Tuna with Pork rinds but mainly Protein and veggie.

Now if I post this on the Main Lobby people will tell me i'm eating too little most likely. But I had Gastric Bypass and being in Ketosis I rarely ever am hungry. I am maybe thinking of coming back to Kimkins and cutting out the fat again. If I do that what do you all think a good calorie intake would be for a guy my size? I really want to shed this weight and again i'm not unhappy with my weight loss or saying that I am stalling but reading that Kimmer said on this plan losing 4-7 pounds per week is very doable it makes me think I am missing something. Any help would be great.

Thanks!

Hi Chunk!

IANAM (I am not a man) but maybe you could start Kimkins or K/E the way it is written and monitor your progress and any problems you have. You can always tweak the plan to add calories, add fat, or whatever.

I joined the Kimkins site today, and I was perusing the men's forum over there, and just looking at the few fitdays I clicked on, these guys were following K/E or Kimkins pretty closely, and a few of them were in the same weight range as you. Some of them also appeared to be exercising as well.

There is another man of your gender who posts here (cricket), so maybe he can give you some pointers, too.

I say go ahead and start, see how you feel, and tweak from there! Good luck!

Chunk! Look at your stats! Congratulations!

Since you started Atkins in May you've lost 42.2-pounds! That's AWESOME!

42.2 pounds in 50 days? That's nothing to sneeze at on Atkins, and truth be told, you *might* lose a bit faster with kimkins, but really, the data from actual research on the matter is very clear - there are huge risks if you reduce your calories more that don't outwight, IMO, the benefit of losing faster for you and your health. You have an incredible weight loss going right now and if I were to make a suggestion - at your weight - it would be to actually eat more calories to preserve lean body mass better.

Thanks Gals!

Controlledcarb - You have a good point. I guess I fail to see the long term results. I think because I dropped 30 pounds in the first 2 weeks of Atkins these last 12 pounds have taken 5-6 weeks to come off and I feel like it's crawling now.

Pink - Thank you. Great to know there are some guys in the midst. Is that forum you were looking at free? Or must you join the site? I'd really love to see one of their fitdays if you could link them.

Thanks for the advice. Perhaps I'll up my calories a bit but eat as clean as possible. I just am so motivated right now to lose the fat I want to see the quickest results possible. 1-2 pound losses at my size gets discouraging I guess even though I know for some that is a great loss. I need to stop watching the Biggest Loser LOL.

Thanks again. I'll do some tweaking this week and see what happens.

1- to 2-pound losses at any size are discouraging. It's one of the reasons folks are successful on kimkins and K/E -- it's motivating.

The Kimkins site costs 60$. There are a variety of forums there, including a men's forum, and a couple of workout forums, which I like because I've decided to train for a half-marathon and want to see how others are doing that on kimkins.

Kimkins and K/E menus are pretty basic. You can look at some sample menus on this forum and find some examples of how people are eating. Lean protein if you are doing K/E, and protein + some veggies on kimkins. There might also be other stuff allowed on Kimkins, but I'm not doing Kimkins at the moment, so I'm not exactly sure. Check the stickies up top. But the plan is so easy to follow. It's not complicated, doesn't require a lot of ingredients, and gets the job done! Lean proteins and green veggies if you want them.

Here's my menu from yesterday:

Meal #1: Eggbeaters + canadian bacon
Meal #2: HB egg sprinkled with seasoned salt
Meal #3: 6 ounces grilled chicken breast with low-cal BBQ sauce
Meal #4: 6 ounces grilled shrimp marinated in chile-lime marinade

I keep it pretty strict, and the weight loss is amazing. I also feel great - lots of energy. I'm exercising most days as well. I drink a variety of fluids throughout the day, like Diet Coke, Crystal Light, Calistoga mineral water, and iced tea.

Good luck with whatever plan you choose!

Slow weight loss stinks....I spent a year eating 1600 calories daily to lose 1-2# a week. Kimkins is a steady 3-4# weekly. If you eat low calorie/fat protein 800 calories can really fill you up.

Hey Chunk! Taken from another plan that I used to participate in, they say if you are a very active male and weigh 200 pounds or more you should eat around 1500-1600 calories. You could easily drop that down to 1300, but I seriously wouldn't suggest going below that especially if you are working out or have a physical job like my husband does. He stayed around 1400-1500 and lost steadily without any hangups...and that was while eating a cup of dry cereal a day and a cup of white or brown rice a day. I'm really leery of people suggesting that you can live on 800 calories.

Just my 2 cents!
