I would look for "treats" with Spenda as a sweetener not SA. SA are not good for you in the sense that it is VERY hard for our body to break them down. This is why so many of us have gastric distress from them. Or look for treats with 5-10 SA vs. 20.

Hey I haven't posted forever but I wanted to sound off on this too... I've been losing about 5lbs per week and I eat 1-2 carbwise bars a day. I know I know guys are different, but I don't think I would really want to drop off the weight any faster than that...I think the moral of the story is everybody's body is different, try it and see what works for you. Don't be so concerned about the small effects of an experiment, its your determination to the end result and goal that really matters.
For those who are wondering how I'm losing so fast well I'm eating probably 1200-2k callories per day @ 50-80% fat and around 15-25 carbs, yes there is that much variance because this is how I plan to eat for a long time, not just a few days.

Escapist, congrats on your loss! How do you get 15-25 daily carbs if you're eating one or two 25 carb bars a day? Are you sure on the calories?
Good job! ![]() With your stats and height I'm guessing you're a guy? We should note that people starting at higher weights can eat more and still lose well initially (per Dr. Atkins). Last edited by Kimmer : 04-03-2006 at 02:27 PM. |

i think SA are most definitely a YMMV issue!
Elyse, I think if you count the whole carbs of the candy in your total carb count, you'll be just fine. my problem is portion control---if that's not a concern you have, more power to you! |

No, sweets are not a portion control issue thing for me. I like them, don't get me wrong, I just am satisfied w/ one serving. But garlic cheese bread dipped in ranch - now there is where I would loose it. I bought a TON of Russell Stover LC candy when I first started this (most of it is still in the basement). We have an outlet near by - so I just bought some and tried adding it in. That, along w/ the nuts and xs fat from cheese, cream and dressing (added in after my version of "induction") slowed me down. Now that I am getting back to what works, I still want my nuts and candy, I just need to find out how the YMMV thing works for me. I think the more I experiment and find out how others fared when adding in my intended add-ins, the better I can figure how to incorporated (or not for that matter) into my WOE. I do think - that it will come down to calories. If I want some at say 300 cals, something else will have to be downsized.

When I first started low carb in 1999 there were no SF or SA candies.
When they hit the market I just had to try them. Did they make me stall?, no they didn't. Did they give me alot of painful gas and sometimes diahrrea? Yes, you bet. And that wasn't even eating the "serving" size. Now if I just have to have candy or sweets I just stick with the REGULAR things and watch my amount. |

Actually, 1-2 lbs a week is moderate for lots of low-carb diets. If you South Beach, Protein Power, Sugar Busters, CAD and even just follow Atkins the way it is written, most people I think don't lose 4-5 lbs a week (correct me if I am wrong, but it seems to me overall 1-3 lbs is the average loss over a long period of time for people counting only the carbs and otherwise just being reasonable). I will be very happy to average 2-3 lbs a week. Also, the slower weight loss rate can help prevent things like loose skin, and removal of your gall bladder.
Each to their own, I won't down super fast weight loss, but I think saying 2-3 lbs a week is slow is kind of ridiculous. I'm not counting the first two weeks of Atkins induction in this of course, where people lose large amounts of water weight. Also it depends on how much someone has to lose. I want to lose 2-3 lbs a week on ATKINS because I prefer eating that way, regardless of how fast I lose. I believe low-carb is a healthier way of eating than low-fat is. I don't want to do weight watchers, are you saying I should just because I don't feel the need to lose 4-5 lbs a week? I'm rather confused by that. Would you really rather pay weight watchers and eat low fat to lose weight if the amount lost was the same? Last edited by berries&cream : 04-03-2006 at 06:56 PM. |

Berries, the other LC plans are higher carb ... and now that include LC snacks ... would be lucky to be in the 2 lbs a week range.
Original Atkins and Stillman's were very fast weight loss plans. Dr. Atkins warned against losing more than 1 pound per day. He wouldn't have warned about it if it weren't a fairly often occurrence. But you're right, the way many people interpret Atkins they're in no danger of losing more than 3 pounds per week ... if that. My comment about Weight Watchers was sarcastic. Ignore me. If you're happy with what you're doing and how you're losing, by all means keep it up! You want to feel good about your program, whatever it is. ![]() |
