I have a few questions.

~ Are your calories always super low? Have they always been?
~ Is the reason you keep calories low because you don't exercise?
~ what is different about your menus now than while on induction? Your menu is so lC?
~ Do you recomend people who exercise to eat so little? Why?

I am just wondering because you have had such amazing success!

Where are you Nisha? There were people picketing the college where I take my kids for swimming lessons, I just drove on through...they were handing out phamlets I just waved...I thought I might get egged for that, but swimming was nothing to do with the college...

I just took a look at Kimmers fitday and I don't see a lot of food . There are several days where she had eaten only 500 calories, some 700 calories and on most days the calories were below 1000. She posted being over 200 pounds on those days, it doesn't look like enough nutrients to substain a 200 pound women. I would worry about losing muscle along with the fat. I'm sorry Kimmer, I know your a sweet person because I see you helping others all the time, but your diet looks like a lowfat plan to me and on some days VERY low calories too.

Debbie...

Those were my thoughts too, which is why I asked those questions earlier. I persoally could and would NEVER want to be on her plan, but she also does no exercise

Thanks everyone for your comments! I'm very ambivalent about a website. Partially because I'm a computer idiot (but I'm glad Nisha'sMommy isn't!). I guess I don't like a lot of attention, or for people to think that "I" developed a plan because I haven't.

Dunno. It's the same reason that I haven't written a book, although I love to write and do regarding children's issues.

Let me ask you a few questions:

1) Why would you want to eat enough calories to sustain body fat?

2) In 'real' ketosis you have no appetite at all and usually feel mildy nauseous (read other posts on this site stating same). If you weren't hungry, actually didn't even want to see food, would you force yourself to eat anyway?

3) I don't believe in the "minimum calories" basal theory, but for those who do, let's say someone needs 2000 calories for basic body functions (breathing, heart pumping, walking) but they only eat 1000 calories (or 500). Isn't the other 1000 or 1500 calories taken from body fat? At 318 I had about 700,000 body fat calories just waiting to be used up.

This is why people who do Oprah's initial program of Optifast (also Medifast) which is 600 calories of nutrition drinks each day lose 1+ pounds per day. No one 'stall's.

This is also why people who do water fasting which is 0 calories a day lose 1+ pounds per day. No one 'stalls'.

Regarding muscle loss, if you note in my Fitday most days had 70-90 grams of protein and the RDA is only 60. It's very easy to get the RDA of protein with only 2 smallish pieces of chicken.

The plan I followed was Atkins 1992 which was "up to" 3 cups of salad type veggies (tomatoes weren't allowed) or "up to" 2 cups plus .5 cup of "cooked" (broccoli, asparagus).

Some days I only had 500 calories? I water fast (OK, it's diet soda) one weekend per month and then my calories are around 0-300 for 3 days. During my weight loss phase since I was already in ketosis and had lost my water weight, I would lose, but not drastically.

Oops, forgot to add but "yes" my menus are low fat, as in I only used enough fat to cook with. There's no weight loss advantage to dousing food with butter, cream or cheese.

Recall Dr. Atkins quote:

"I never said calories don't count. I say carbohydrates count more. There's no doubt that someone will lose more and faster on 1500 calories 10 carbs than 2500 calories 10 carbs."

Dr. Atkins never gives a minimum calorie requirement. He said eat until satisfied and in 'real' ketosis, it doesn't take much food at all. In some cases, none.

In fact, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, a medical doctor, currently supervised therapeutic water fasting for morbidly obese patients. These fasts, of water only (maybe vitamins I don't know), last for months with weight losses of 200+ pounds.

If anyone's interested, check the links on the water fasting challenge thread "Make It Fast" and you can read about why muscle is spared during water fasting. There's an initial loss (which is dead and diseased tissue), then it stops after 2 weeks.

You can read autopsy results of people who have literally starved to death due to poverty (skin and bone, no body fat left) and their vital organs are only 1-3% smaller. The body lives off of body fat first, when that's gone it goes to muscle, but at that point the electrolytes are messed up and patients die of heart attack.

I am just wondering because you have had such amazing success!
1) My calories now work out to about 1200-1400 which fits with the theory of 10X current body weight to maintain.

2) I don't keep calories low, I don't count calories. However, I don't seek out fats (I could do serious damage to a block of cheese) and I don't eat any "whites" ... bread, rice, sugar, flour ... except an occasional potato. I eat at much lean protein and veggies as I like. Because I don't eat high calorie fats, my calories remain naturally lower.

3) Yes, if I exercised I could eat more, but I can't fathom the concept of exercising to allow myself to eat more. Exercising for fitness I can understand, but to "eat more"? Nope, it almost sounds wrong.

4) I don't recommend anyone go low calorie unless they want to lose as quickly as possible, and not everyone does. I'm fine with that, perfectly fine. There's a strong psychological association with food and comfort, many people aren't ready/willing to give that up.

5) My current menus are very LC. I focus on lean protein, salad and other veggies (not the starchy types) and whatever fat I need to make my menus work. I've added fruit. I'm not in ketosis and have an appetite, so I just eat larger portions.

How do you imagine the people on Biggest Loser manage to lose 15 pounds in a single week? Their calories aren't high (someone said 1200-1500), but they are burning maybe 1000+ calories a day during hours of intense exercise. They don't eat more to compensate for the calories burned. Note that the recent episodes where people lose on their own at home don't produce the 15 lbs a week success ... primarily because they aren't burning 1000+ calories a day on exercise (not to mention higher calories).

I am following Kimmers plan of lo-carb..... lo-calorie... It works.... and you know what?? I feel GREAT!!! and I'm in ketosis.... not hungry and OK with it, although at night sometimes I feel the need for something different, but it is not because I'm actually hungry, (old habits die hard)......

15 days and 12 pounds gone.... I would like to see myself drop a pound a day, but I am still tweaking the plan a little to see what works for me.... if you want to peek, my fitday is under "grennie" password is the same.

Want to add, that 2 years ago I did strict Atkins... by the book... had lots of allowed things, kept my carbs just under 20... no fit day no watching or calculating...I lost weight....S L O W L Y.... 3 months to drop 13 pounds! I got frustrated and quit, convinced I just wasn't cut out for this WOE.

I am thrilled to have found Kimmers plan... Thank You Kimmer! You are a lifesaver!

Kimmer

You rock!!!
You answers are well thought out and right? I appreciate knowledge,
I love the debates with Low cal/ high fat/ high cal,
It always comes to the same thing,
You cant lose weight if you have too many carb and too much fat, You have to tweak and find your own answer, I have just started mine, and it is a bumpy road so far, I will find mine, and will try Kimkins.
These message boards are fantastic. Everybody has great thoughts on the program,

Thanks all for the wonderful info and big thanks to Kimmer, you go girl...
