Question for Kimmer

Hi Kimmer,
I was reading one of your older posts and you mentioned you had lost 160 lbs in 7 months. That averages about 23 lbs per month. My question is--do you think you are an exception for this much loss per month or do you credit it to strictly following and very very LC plan? If your answer is the latter, do you think everyone can have that kind of success if they strictly stick to something like your 3-day experiment or Stillman's? Also, during that time, were you very active or busy? Just curious--as always, I'm researching every point of your unbelievable loss!
Thanks for your help,
Lucky4

Obviously I'm not Kimmer, and I would not presume to answer your question about how she lost the weight and has kept it off, but she is definitely the exception to the rule. I've never met anyone on this site or anywhere else who has lost as much weight as quickly as Kimmer.

Ditto! I have a friend who had G.B. surgery and has lost 100 ponds in 6 months which is very fast, but still not at the rate Kimmer lost her weight, I think Kimmer was just very blessed with her rate of loss and success!!

First, let me say I think I'm very much the exception to the rule for two reasons:

1) Repetitive food choices don't bother me at all if I'm getting the results I want.
2) I've lost/gained enough times to know myself and what works, i.e., I wasn't "experimenting", I knew what I was doing.

When figuring my 160 lbs in 7 months, let's keep in mind that included 11 lbs overnight (water weight, you should have seen me!), but it's still 20-21 lbs a month. This is very doable for someone with A LOT to lose (as in 200 lbs) but clearly wouldn't work for someone with 50-60 lbs to lose.

You know the expression, "sick and tired of being sick and tired"? Well, I was sick and tired of being fat, but mostly sick and tired of starting off with good weight loss (50-88 lbs at various times) and regaining.

I know that the lower my carbs are the faster the loss. For me, there wasn't any point in adding carbs (like fruit) to slow my loss or to gain variety because, frankly, there isn't anything within the low-carb realm that would have been worth slowing my weight loss down for.

When you weight a lot (like 318 lbs), you can lose 20-25 lbs and not look any different! Honestly, nothing. Your pants sag a bit, but you still look big. It's important in the motivation department to lose enough weight, quickly enough, that you can see progress. For me, even going from size 26 to a 22 (two sizes) made no discernable difference in my appearance to me.

But back to whether it's possible. Yes, it is, but it's not for everyone. Not everyone could (or would want to) sustain the discipline. Even without an appetite, some will feel pressure from spouses, family or coworkers to veer from ultra low carb. Some who use food as comfort, may not have substitutes in place.

My weight loss averages out to 4-5 lbs a week. On the big weight loss shows, they accomplish that and more. Granted, they may not keep it up (see reasons above), and they aren't doing ultra low carb so they have appetite to contend with ... but they lose 10+ lbs per week (with exercise).

Even the singer Wayne Newton mentioned during an !E channel interview that he lost 100 lbs in 6 months via chicken ceasar salads 6 days a week (sounds low carb to me).

Yes, it's possible.

Thanks Kimmer--you're such an inspiration to everyone. Now, if I can just get into deep ketosis, I think I'll be okay One last question if you don't mind (well, I think it's the last).....did you ever have problems during PMS or TOM that tend to throw a lot of women (like myself) through a cement mixer? If so, any tips or advice?
Have a great day!

Lucky, sorry I don't. I don't get PMS (my ex used to say I was like that all month ).

The thing is, once you get into 'real' ketosis and have that no hunger, semi-nausea feeling, you really don't want anything to eat. Everything tastes kind of weird.

My neighbor is very overweight (394 lbs) and can barely walk. I talked to her about low carb and she decided to give it a try. She's eating lean protein (loves chicken and fish) with salads (bagged type). Yesterday was 3 weeks and she's lost 37 lbs. If she had weighed 194 lbs, that wouldn't have happened.

Whether she'll stay the course, I don't know. She's fond of candy, cake and pies and pasta ... but more so, she loves convenience (fast food and frozen dinners).

Have you joined any Challenge groups?

You bet I do! I have my size 26 jeans (if I hold them up to me, I can wrap them all the way to the back), a pair of dress flats (they're so loose it's like a little girl trying on her dad's shoes) and my favorite size 24 dress which I wore to my son's christening (he's 15 now!)

I look, shake my head, and look again. Always good for a morale boost (or before going to a celebration where they'll be lots of food!)

Thank you for the kind words everybody!!!

Kimmer, your friend's loss is astounding--but I know it's not impossible. Back to the PMS, I can be in strong ketosis and yet, during PMS, will still get horrible cravings that sometimes, I just can't handle. Last month, I did pretty well but it was an exhausting battle--I'm not sure if I have that kind of determination each and every month!!! I have posted this on the health board (and every other board I can think of). Sequim is there trying to help--now I"m just waiting for his advice on a solution--he's a book of knowledge
I have joined a few challenges--Stillman's thread and sometimes, I get on the 3-day experiment or the protein gang thread--but again, once I'm in ketosis--I do great--until hormones grab me by my neck and it's all downhill from there. I just came off of a binge--gained about 10 lbs but I know it's water. I promised myself that for these 3 days I will NOT cheat--but I also know PMS is around the corner and somedays, I just want to give up. Your posts plus the help on this board have really been my savior in LCing--and I'm determined somehow, someway to beat the odds against me. Thanks to you and others for being there for so many of us!
