starvation mode
Kimmer,
Actually, i was curious about that too. When we are in "real ketosis", we are not hungry and tend to eat less food like 800-1000 cal a day. Won't our body be reluctant to release those excess fat if it thinks that we are starving?? |

![]() I didn't include Kimkins because not everyone who is claiming to follow how I lost weight is actually following my guidelines. However, those that do also lose at an amazing rate! If you read the Water Fasting links (check page 1 of the "Make It Fast" challenge), you'll see that while metabolism drops initially at 0 calories (it would drop less at 500 or 1000), it stabilizes within a couple of weeks. When you begin eating more as you get closer to goal, your metabolism rises. Keep in mind that when your metabolism drops (which it does anything you're eating less than basal), it's not commensurate to how quickly you burn body fat. An example (totally fake numbers) would be a 37% metabolism decrease but you still lose 5-7 lbs a week. Check the very low calorie threads and see how fast people lose. The illusionist David Blaine (does "Street Magic") did what he called a "starvation stunt" in Britain where he was suspended in a plexiglass box for 30 days ... water only. He was normal weight when he started and STILL lost 56 pounds in 30 days. The British doctors said he was in perfect health afterward (they think he's a nut so I doubt they're covering for him). The singer, Wayne Newton, said during an interview on !E channel, that he lost 100 lbs in 6 months by eating caesar salad 3 times a day, 6 days a week ... this was over 25 years ago and he's kept it off. Oprah Winfrey lost 67 lbs in 4 months on 600 calories a day. Yes, she regained it because she returned to her old food choices, but there wasn't any sign that her body was hanging onto body fat at very low calories. ![]() |

How do you know your eating 70 - 90 grams of protein a day??
At the end of the day when I put the days foods in FITDAY, say my total comes up short or over? What are some examples of the right %?? |

I picked 70-90 because it seemed like a good number and it actually a small amount of food (like 4 oz of protein 3X a day). The RDA is only 60, so don't feel like you need to push it. It's not a matter of forcing yourself to stay in protein "ranges". When you enter what I term 'real' ketosis and lose your appetite, you don't want to eat ANYTHING ... the thought of food makes you kind of queasy. So I decided to ensure I'd "force" myself to make 70-90 grams a day. Don't force yourself on any plan. If your carbs are low enough, you'll see the appetite suppression. ![]() |

Ok, Kimmer - I may need to know a bit more about your WOE. This is my 2nd time trying Atkins. The first time, two years ago, I was on Induction for 2 months and only lost 4lbs. I followed the rules - even called the Atkins Center several times a week (much to their annoyance) to see what I was doing wrong. What they finally said was maybe this diet doesn't work for everyone. I was devastated. It wasn't like I had 5 lbs to lose - I had 60 lbs to lose!
![]() So now, I'm on again - hoping this time I can make it work. I love the way I feel on it and I'm not hungry. I have 50lbs to lose, and today is the first day of my 4th week. In the 3 weeks I've been on Induction I have lost about 4 or 5 lbs. Nothing specatular. Here's a typical day: 3 eggs cooked in 1 pat of butter 3 slices fresh bacon 16oz. coffee Roasted chicken - breast meat and wing with skin 12 slices cucumber 1.5oz of cream cheese Steak - broiled 8oz before cooking cauliflower - .5 cup cheddar cheese - .5 oz mayo - 1tb mustard 1tsp pork rinds - 6 rinds so much water I can't even add it all up! Total: 1347 Fat: 99 893 67% Sat: 43 385 29% Poly: 12 112 8% Mono: 34 308 23% Carbs: 11 33 3% Fiber: 2 0 0% Protein: 100 398 30% Alcohol: 0 0 0% Should I try lowering the fat and upping the carbs? Should I lower my calories? I try to follow the 10-12x your goal weight rule. I just want to see me lose on this and I'm trying to follow the plan but wonder after the last failure if I should plan on doing it a bit differently. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Sorry I was afk all weekend so I will try to answer all the questions directed at me now. Sorry Kimmer, seems like I opened a can of worms lol but hey if it helps someone else I'm all for it and I know you are cuz you are just that way
andibug-I am an hour south of Nashville. Rie-no my calorie count isn't part of Kimkins...I just am not very hungry when I am in real ketosis. Like I said earlier....no instead of saying "what can I eat next" ...now I am saying "what else do I have to eat to get my counts up to where they need to be cuz I am just NOT hungry". Now that is quite a switch for me but a nice one to not NEED food to be satisfied. Now I need food for fuel ...not comfort. gina-just look at my Fitday and you can see for yourself. I try to keep my fat grams lower than my protein grams. I try to keep my protein grams between 70-90 grams per day and my carbs under 20. Here is the link to my Fitday http://www.fitday.com/WebFit/PublicJ...ner=melodyVAKS I'm not good at inserting links but hopefully you can find it lol. Rory-Use Fitday *it's free* to keep track of how much you are eating in fat, calories, carbs and protein. This is a real eye opener. Also, measure or weigh EVERYTHING you eat. You will be surprised at the difference between what we think is a serving size and what actually is. Be conservative with things like cream cheese, cheese, anything with a high fat content. Keep those carbs under 20 total carbs...not net. At least this is what has worked for me. Thank you to everyone for the support and congrats. Thanks most of all to Kimmer--what an angel. If anyone would be interested just let me know and I'll start a Kimkinite thread *grinz*. Maybe we can challenge each other and keep each other on the Kimkin straight and narrow. Keep on keepin' on,

1) .5 oz cheese is .5 slice -- is that typical? How do you eat it? 2) Mayo - Is that a flat measured tablespoon or a cereal spoon? 3) Cauliflower - .5 cup is a jello cup, about 3-4 florets, is that all you eat? 4) Beverages - You don't list anything but coffee. What else are you drinking? Everything has carbs except water and Splenda sweetened diet soda. 5) Did you weigh the chicken breast because everything you see packaged at the store is "large". 6) Butter - What do you put on the cooked cauliflower? 6) What do you do with a half package of cream cheese? 7) What do you do on weekends? Any 'net' carb products ever? These are the numbers I got, plus a link to my Fitday (check Oct 4th): Calories - 1793 Carbs - 15 Protein - 156 Kimmer's Fitday - Rie's Sample Menu (Oct 4th) I'd cut back on carbs and extra fats. Ditch the cream cheese & pork rinds, pick salads over cucumbers, be sure you're measuring accurately, try 2 eggs/2 bacon. |

It's OK to open a can of worms ... they're low carb!Melody, why are you forcing yourself to eat? The only number that matters is keeping carbs <20. Nothing else "has" to be anything. You can get your protein in with only 2 small (4 oz) servings of chicken or fish. (PS - Using coffee creamer isn't Kimkins either. ) |

Kimmer - here's my answers:
1) .5 oz cheese is .5 slice -- is that typical? How do you eat it? I get thin sliced fresh American cheese from the deli and one slice weights .5 oz. 2) Mayo - Is that a flat measured tablespoon or a cereal spoon? I have a recipe that calls for about 1/2 c mayo with the cauliflower and I get 6-8 servings out of it - so that's approx 1TB 3) Cauliflower - .5 cup is a jello cup, about 3-4 florets, is that all you eat? - I cut up the cauliflower - so yes it is about 1/2 cup chopped 4) Beverages - You don't list anything but coffee. What else are you drinking? Everything has carbs except water and Splenda sweetened diet soda. - I did list that I drink tons of water. Sometimes I will have one glass of Diet Rite 5) Did you weigh the chicken breast because everything you see packaged at the store is "large". - I roasted a whole chicken and just pulled off a portion of chicken breast along with the wing 6) Butter - What do you put on the cooked cauliflower? - that's where the cheese/mayo comes in - forgot to add mustard 6) What do you do with a half package of cream cheese? - I don't eat 1/2 package - 1.5 oz of an 8oz package. I ate it in two sittings with the cucumbers and the pork rinds. 7) What do you do on weekends? Any 'net' carb products ever? I NEVER do net carbs. That's why I'm consfused. If I'm following Induction - I am doing everything right as far as I can tell. But you say reduce carbs and up fat? Aren't we supposed to be as close to 20 carbs as possible? I thought it was bad to only have 10 or 12 grams of carbs/day? I've been trying to follow 60-70% fat, 25-30% protein and 5-10% carbs. Should I not be doing that? ![]() |

Ok everyone..I need to clarify a few things. I am doing Kimkins but there are a few things that I am slowly adjusting so that I don't turn into a vicious animal with my family.
I was having 6 tsp. 'unmeasured' creamer in my coffee in the morning..per cup. I am down to only 2 measured tsps now and I am working toward 0. Creamer is NOT a Kimkins food. I am not sure about the lc peanut butter cookies. I don't think peanut butter is on Kimkins but these are only things I have very sparingly...that means only 1 or 2 cookies. These are made with 1 cup peanut butter, splenda and 1 egg. Kimmer will let me know if these are a no no on Kimkins. Kimmer, the only reason I am forcing myself to eat is because if I don't I end up with about 50 grams of protein and under 1000 calories. How low can I go on protein and it still be safe? I am assuming about 40 would be ok. If so, then I will stop trying to make myself get in 70-90 grams a day. I don't usually have trouble with getting in 20 carbs because of the sweetners that I count in my coffee and diet soft drinks. Plus I like green beans, lettuce and cucumbers so if I am way low on carbs...like 7 or something, I'll add a few veggies. Those are better for me than artificial sweetner anyways. Hope this clears things up for those that I totally confused. Sorry Kimmer, I guess I should have said I was using 'adjusted' Kimkins lol. I'll get there soon though. Then I will be a true, died in the wool Kimkinite!!!! Keep on keepin' on |

![]() What do you guys eat when you just want some flavor? Sometimes I just want to taste something non-meaty, non-eggy, non-cheesy. You know what I mean? Something to just POP in my mouth! Any suggestions? |

Kimmer, I have a couple of questions for you:
1. When you were in your weight loss stage, did you use test strips? And if so, how dark were they? 2. What was your average fat % then? I am guessing around 60% - right? 3. Did you take any supplements such as a mult-vitamin or psyllium capsules? 4. How many calories/carbs/fat/protein do you currently eat on average? I have been low carbing for 2 1/2 years. I did pretty well at first and lost 38 pounds then the stalling started. I was probably getting around 1700 - 1800 cal/day and tried to stay under 30 net carbs. Then I started adding LC products and gained back some. On Sept 1. I recommitted to my LC lifestyle and adopted some of your principles - lower calories, lower fats, total carbs (not net) and especially no LC products. I have averaged around 1250 calories and 20 total carbs. So far I have lost 9.5 pounds and I am not feeling hungry. So far so good. I would like to get the calories a little lower but I find that difficult. Although I have not directly communicated with you, I have followed your amazing story these past couple of years and I want to thank you for the insight you give us through your experience & research. ![]() |

#2 - I don't pay attention to percentages. I watched carbs and protein only. <20 TOTAL carbs, no products, 70-90 gm protein, just enough fat to make my menus work (no gobs of salad dressing). Lady Melissa put my menus into an Excel spreadsheet and said my average fat was 50-55% because my calories were low. #3 - I took a WalMart copy of Centrum w/ Iron (per my doctor). I don't use other supplements because I'm not smart enough to figure them out. ![]() Congrats on discovering things about yourself! I would think 1800 calories and 30 net carbs would be difficult for weight loss, considering it was Dr. Atkin's opinion that people who are overweight are insulin resistant and CANNOT eat many carbs. ![]() |

Guys, thank you soooooo much! But you misunderstand. You inspire me! Every poster with a situation is a real, live, actual person ... not an anonymous 'somebody' with a user name.
I feel your struggles because I've been there (too many times to count!) I'm thrilled when there's success, when someone learns something important about what will work for them. I'm saddened when someone has a setback. ![]() JudiM, what about having prepped veggies as an impulse snack if you don't want meat/cheese/eggs? Diced 'something' in a plastic container or baggies? ![]() |

"Kimkinites Unite" ... is that too cute, or what?
KimmerJ, I'm a very fast loser. Don't compare yourself to me. When I started here 5 years ago I never posted my losses because they were so much faster than everyone else. I think part of it is the way my body loses ... although I gain just as fast ... and partially due to low calories (courtesy of ketosis!) Good luck you "losers"! ![]() |
