Struggling w/ Temptation on July 4th (sudden invite)

Good morning all!

Today is my DD. I anticipated a quiet holiday with DH. But then we got a sudden invite to a 4th of July BBQ tonight and its throwing a serious wrench in my JUDDD mindset.

I seriously thought of making it a Middle Day, but since I just started JUDDD 2 weeks ago this coming Tuesday, I want to keep on track to let SIRT1 kick in.

After obsessing, sweating, biting my nails, I decided on the following plan:

1. Enjoy everyone's company and have a good time
2. Drink lots of water, tea and coffee
3. I made cabbage soup this a.m. to tide me thru til this evening.
4. When I go to the BBQ tonight I will bring my own steamed broccoli and salad and will eat only 1 piece of meat on the BBQ menu to go along with my veggies.
5. I will carefully wrap a small piece of dessert and protein from the BBQ to save it for tomorrow's UD!

Wish me luck!

Hope you all have a good DD or UD and have a happy 4th of July!

Thanks Carly, I appreciate your kind support.

Last night I was going through many of the JUDDD forum posts from the past several years and I enjoyed your JUDDD story. You look fantastic and I am so proud of you.

I also liked the "best of JUDDD threads" you submitted a while back. It was very inspirational and helped me keep on track to see everyone's successes, and to know that the JUDDD "calm" is one of the great gifts of this WOE.

Yay, good plan!

One thing I find helpful is to just really enjoy the smells of the food cooking. It's almost as good as eating!

My mom & grandmother used to say they wouldn't be hungry after cooking all day, especially for a big holiday dinner. They would sit down with a little saucer with just a few tablespoons of food on it. "I've been smelling and tasting this food all day, I'm just tired of it and I don't want any." We all couldn't wait to attack the food and thought they were crazy...Years later I became a professional cook, and the same thing would happen to me!

Anyway, if I sit there at a party or BBQ on a DD and keep thinking, "Aw man, I wish I could eat today!" of course I don't have a very good time, or I break down and cheat! But if I just relax and breathe it in, maybe even put some food on a plate, lean over it and take big whiffs, I notice that while at first the good smells make me feel really, painfully hungry, if I just keep smelling without eating the hunger passes. And I try to think/notice/say positive things, like how colorful and beautiful the food is. Sort of a meditation practice, if you're into that.

PirateJenny,

It's fascinating what you said about wonderful smells of food invoking powerful hunger, but then how it passes --- and the enjoyment of the smells remain. I will try being mindful of this tonight, just to see what happens.

I know what you mean about cooking and tasting all day and not being interested or hungry in the final meal, lol. Your being a professional cook -- this probably happened to you practically on a daily basis, especially if you were preparing the same rotations of food ad infinitum.

One of the best cooks I know taught me something invaluable. She said when food reaches the height of its aroma in the oven -- whether it's meat, poultry or pastry or bread -- then it's cooked to perfection and it's time to remove it from the oven. This is so true ... when I bake and smell the full aroma, I check on the item, and sure enough, the temperature in the meat is perfect, or baked items like cookies are perfectly done.

Our sense of smell plays such a big factor in food. It's really quite fascinating.

Good luck with your plan, Cyn. It sounds like you've got it handled. Enjoy the party, and little tiny tastes of the food you want to try.

I agree with PJ, the smell of food is really delicious all by itself, if you can turn your mind to it that way. I cook often on DDs and rarely have an issue not eating it.

I feel rather red-faced this morning. Drat!

Despite my best laid plans, I admit to tasting a bit of everything, and having my dessert too. I exceeded my fast day calories by a mile ... sigh.

Anyway, I enjoyed myself and I realize today is a new day on JUDDD.

Aaargh. I hate holidays!

LOL! Don't hate them, they are rare and you SHOULD enjoy them! No big thing! A few DDs usually takes care of any extra indulgences anyways. It's all good! I'm glad you had fun.

Flutter,

You are so kind. Thanks for your encouragement.

I've kept my UD rather low the next day and am back on rotations and doing fine. Thankfully my appetite has been on the "low" side for the past few days after the 4th. For that I am quite grateful.
