All 3 of my swim suits are tankinis. It's really helpful when I can get a larger top and smaller bottom. I need room for the girls and my butt is flatter than a pancake

I don’t need different sizes, but I do need a properly sized built-in bra, and the separate halves are just more practical for the way I’m likely to use it, while looking better than a bikini given that I’m not 16 any more! I’ll be on holiday, and probably head out for the day on foot, so a swimsuit that I can wear under my clothes and that allows me to go to the loo without getting completely undressed makes more sense.

It’s never crossed my mind to swim for several years, I think it’s a combination of having more confidence because I’ve lost weight, and having a bit more energy than I had last time I was at this weight when my hormones were just starting to wreak their havoc.

Happy Mother's day to all.
I just had a free health screening done today and here are the results.

Glucose:99 non-fasting
Chol:230
HDL:100
Risk ratio: unable to calculate (I was told it was so low it did not pick up on the meter)
B/P: 115/75
BMI: 27
Body fat %: 38% ouch!!!
My question is.... How often and what type of exercise would I need to do to decrease the fat %. I have found that since I am losing weight, my arms are really sagging and not pretty when in short sleeves etc. I know I need to do weight lifting, but can it be done with 5 lb hand weights?

Kathy,
There are several existing threads on weight lifting and resistance training. I will see if I can find some and link them in another message. Otherwise take a look through older threads, there is a lot of good info out there already.

The suit I got (and LOVE) is a tankini with a built in bra. It has really good coverage and actually makes the girls look good, but minimizes them, without squishing. I got swim shorts with built in bikini bottom for the bottoms. The shorts come to just below my saggy elephant butt skin.

I always go for tankini/swim short combos for the convenience of being able to use the restroom, and because they're sporty and cute without showing too much. I also have a long torso, so one-piece suits are very difficult to find that don't end up pulling in places they have no business pulling. Plus, if I want to run into a store or something, I can just throw a t-shirt on and feel "normally dressed" if that makes sense.

It absolutely makes sense. That was my reasoning too. The top on the one I’m getting could pass for a tank top — at least for the casual beach-y sort of place where you’d be likely to be wearing it. I’ve just gone for bikini bottoms, so it’ll need a skirt or trousers to look properly dressed, but I generally prefer to keep most of my skin covered anyway, so that works for me.

It’s by Fantasie. I ordered it from barenecessities, but I’m sure there are other sources. You buy the top and bottom separately, so although there don’t seem to be shorts in the same design, it shouldn’t be too hard to find something that would work.

That's very pretty Ailuros!! I'm sure anyone could easily find a pair of swim shorts in royal blue to match.

Here's mine. The detail doesn't really show the pretty silver stripes or the silver rings holding the straps. Black swim shorts.

Ailuros, that would be really pretty with a flowing skirt, totally appropriate for most beachy cafes or shops. Love it.

I wear a tankini, too. Mostly because I like a flattering, supportive underwire top with power mesh tummy control, but I have droopy skin on the inside of my thighs so I need a long-ish skirted bottom. Most "swim skirts" end at the crotch, are designed for teenagers (what teen wears a swim skirt?) and are absolutely useless. Enter Land's End, the only place that makes long enough skirts (14"), and their suits are super durable, too. Nobody wants to see my saggy old lady inner-thigh skin at the beach.

Some of you are acquainted with my profound loathing of clothes shopping even when I need something functional. Well, I'm in need of a swimsuit (preferably tankini) that will allow someone to swim a mile or so; be towed (so, emphatically no lowish cut bust or waistline) without gaping or allowing in too much water; dry quickly; is, preferably, chlorine-resistant; preferably a racing back with good support and as little adjustable metal or plastic as possible.

Above all, the items must stay in place when performing a scramble back into a boat. This is just as elegant as it sounds - you jump from the water and straddle the back of your boat, then you lie close to the boat and use your hands and legs to work your way to the cockpit and then throw yourself inside in a manner that would trigger a parental guidance warning for an instructional video.

During the scramble, your clothing gets caught, even the men can lose their leggings. You do all this while clutching the safety handle of your spray deck between your teeth and attempting to jump and scramble without catching the buoyancy aid in such a way that capsizes the boat. One is quite the picture of decorum and elegance, as you might imagine.

This might also explain why I would like a top that will firmly stay in place without metal or plastic digging into me and swim shorts with a reasonably high waist (and no tendency to roll down as you really don't have a hand to hitch them back) that extend down onto my thighs in boy short style so nothing can ride up in a wholly inappropriate manner.

However, I need to perform this and similar manoeuvres many times over the next 10 weeks and would very much like a tankini that could do this. Any suggestions?

I would say board shorts for sure (I have seen some that are fairly long, pretty close to the knee) and a rash guard over your swimsuit top. I live in surfer-land so they are everywhere here, but they look like a long or short sleeved shirt but they're made out of a water shedding, quick-dry material. They'll give you some sun protection too.

I don't know which brands you have over there, but Patagonia is very popular here.

I did a quick search on our Amazon and some of the rashguards were called swim tees.

Happy Mothers Day Everyone! My second DD went well yesterday. It was the first nice day we have had in a while so was busy working outside. I do find I get a little snippy on my DD but I am hoping that is normal and will maybe go away after a while. Going to treat myself to an ice cream later with the boys.

I would say look for surfing or triathalon gear. There are some great items out there designed for both - especially the tri gear. But both are designed to say put while you're actually being active while wearing them. Unlike most swim suits which assume you're mostly there to be seen, and maybe some leisurely laps in the pool.

On a separate note - I have got to get it in gear. The pants don't lie - we say that all the time and my jeans are officially snug. Not jaws-of-life snug but noticeably tighter than even 2 weeks ago. I think the problem is that I've been eating more than I'm able to justify with my workouts lately. I'm eating to accommodate how much I *WANT* to be working out, not how much I am *ACTUALLY* working out. So back to EOD, even if it means my training suffers. Maybe its a good cycle to be in anyway.

I'll weigh and update my ticker soon. That 154 was achieved through incredibly artificial means, and, plus, I know I'm closer to 160 and I want to own it.

Happy Mother's Day to all our USA mothers. I've just gotten back from our celebration with my mom and family. Once again saw how much I still need to lose in a picture. I wish I could go to a family function without having to have pictures taken for once. I'm already on FB. However, I saw the Mother's Day picture (2011) that inspired me to start this weight loss journey a couple of days ago at my mom's and there is a huge difference!

I hope everyone had a wonderful day, however you chose to celebrate.

I was snippy in the beginning, too, but it definitely passes.

SS- do you have Speedo brand in the UK? They may have something that is sturdier and will stay in place.

Hope all the mothers are having a great day!

Fly by again. Lovely tattoos, good to see Adi, Shari, Yam Yam, sorry about adrenal issues, love the photos of Bridezilla wedding, and the Tankinis. So much else, just can't respond to everything.

Having such a great time, really walking a lot and still enjoying the Pisco sours and they are not dissimilar to Margarita's.

Tomorrow we will be staying up at Machu Picchu, can't wait.

Cute tankinis guys! I doubt I'll be shopping for anything like that this year, but have hopes for next summer. I'm hoping my resistance training will be showing in earnest by then and hopefully I won't be as scary looking with thighs and upper arms showing!

Kissa, your trip sounds wonderful! I'm glad you're enjoying yourself, and even gladder you can pop in to see us!

Kathy, everything I've been reading about losing fat % says ditch the long cardio and concentrate on heavier resistance/weight training. I'm starting week 5 of Body by You: The You Are Your Own Gym program for women (YAYOG) and LOVE IT!

Thank you, Gina, Carly, and Yennie for the recommendations and suggestions. I've been looking for what's available and it's given me some very helpful search terms and brands to evaluate. I'll probably order later this week and it wouldn't have been possible without your help (Yes, I really am that bad at ordering clothes. )

I plan on buying a swim suit something like this. Modest, keeps me out of the sun, etc. Easier to be active on the beach without being self conscience on.
