Is Decision Fatigue Wrecking Your Diet?

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/21/ma...anted=all&_r=0

I found this article very interesting. It could explain why DDs and UDs can both cause us problems. On UDs it may simply be that we're allowing ourselves too many choices without planning in advance. On DDs maybe it's the depletion of glucose because of hunger.

Do you think decision fatigue could be a factor when your UD runs away with you or when you just can't seem to stick to your DD calories? I certainly see it in myself.

I like Baumeister's research and I think decision fatigue plays a substantial role in WOE sabotage. It's why I like having my weekly menu planned in advance so that I can rarely be blindsided when making my food choices. (Of course, I have a relatively ludicrous amount of control over what I eat so that I can manage my migraines as well as maintain my weight - I couldn't do that on the fly as I'd be overwhelmed too quickly and would end up making inappropriate choices from which I think unwelcome consequences would cascade.)

ETA: too often, I've seen women in near tears in the take-away section of a supermarket when they're choosing lunch options. They're genuinely overwhelmed by choosing what fits for them - particularly, as one of them once said when I approached her to ask if she was OK (she looked so distressed that I had to), "I started off Atkins when I woke up, switched to South Beach when I realised I didn't have anything suitable for breakfast in the house, decided that I wanted to try a low-fat diet at 11 am and now I don't know what to eat".

Sept 2014 A recent DXA scan reported very low muscle mass (sarcopenia) so I'm still thinking about how to cope with that. I have some joint surgery to schedule. I may miss questions that people ask me or personals. Apologies if I do, it's not intentional.

Really very interesting! I do know that when I have my foods all planned out I do much better than when I wing it. But there is another stress in doing the planning out, and sometimes I get fatigued with that process. Can't win sometimes.

This is going to make me be more careful when I'm trying to make important decisions. If I'm fatigued mentally, or just if it's late in the day, I may try to wait until I'm fresh in the morning.

oh my gosh... yes!! i am still struggling with this. Now that i'm no longer "low-carb" but still know I shouldn't go crazy with them or sugar... I'm practically stunted when grocery shopping. so many decisions. It's like I stock up on stuff for my dd's and that's totally easy but shopping/planning for UD's is a different story.

Yep!! UDs are still difficult. So are sudden invitations to a restaurant on a DD. Fortunately, I had the same experience a couple of weeks ago, so I'll use that day's menu. But usually, this doesn't work out so easily. It took me a long time to figure out what to get from this buffet restaurant that would be healthy and filling and not too many calories. I need Thu and Sat as up days this week.

I think one of the reasons that Down Days work for me is that I usually fast. So, I don't have to make ANY decisions. I already know what my response to food is going to be:no, not today.

When I do eat on Down Days, I am most successful when I know exactly what I am going to do.

Now, I know why!

I think I definitely suffer from this. The successful DDs I had, I waited until the end of the day and ate something I had decided on the previous day.

I think this is why my DD's are never a problem for me. I eat exactly the same thing each DD. I don't have to make any decisions. Now, UDs are another matter. I do struggle to not overeat because I think I can get away with it. And I mostly have, but I still want to lose the five pounds I gained six months ago. I start out the day with a semi-plan, but usually don't follow through. The end of the day is the hardest.

Overall, though, JUDDD has still delivered the best results of anything I've ever done, long term.

I'm new here, so I just looked at your before and after photos. In a word: WOW! Well done to both of you! The prevalence of JUDDD success stories is what keeps me motivated and hopeful this will work.

Thanks! I lost most of the weight with Atkins and hCG, but JUDDD has made maintenance a reality. Good luck!
