I'm so thankful for the forum here and that i found something that works for me!
Its been a few years of being caught up in either eating unhealthfully and/or obsessing on daily calories or carbs. For me eod works very well without any bother.

I'm constantly surprised that its something I can do and that I am losing, slowly but surely.

I'm a little bit worried about a drive to France in two weeks. We plan to spend about 4 days traveling and many non home cooked meals. I wonder what will happen to me then?

I must try to find some posts about how Juddders deal with that I think.

Thanks to everyone here for your support, its great.

If it’s only four days, and you don’t do that sort of thing all the time, I’d just enjoy the food and get back to normal straight afterwards. Other options are to use some alternative intermittent fasting schedule, effectively missing some meals (breakfast is the obvious one to skip). Sometimes you can pick fairly low calorie options, like a seafood plate.

Thanks guys, Carol 150 pounds is amazing. I really need to lose about 30 pounds, it would put me at about 150 which seems heavy but for me it looks good. My husband says my neck and collar get to think and gaunt looking any lower than that. Guess I was just meant to be a curvy girl to some degree...just not as curvy as I am now. My down day has been pretty good I will finish out my calories with an apple later tonight. Had a 70 calorie portion of soup for dinner. seems to have done the trick.

Milly- I'm on vacation now for 4 days and I'm fasting each day till dinner then eating what I wish. I'm not a huge day time eater anyway, but the food I'm eating for dinners down here is much richer than what I would eat at home. I imagine I may come back a bit up, but my first day home will be a DD and that should resolve any potential damage.

I don't travel often. 3x a year tops so I never do rotations on traveling vacations. On stay-cations I will do DDs, but that's just me.

Well, after giving it a month's trial, I've decided that the ultra-low-calorie DDs are not for me. Although they may be benign, being that hungry seems to lead to palpitations - a bit scary. I'm going to try straight calorie counting and add back a few "better-for-you" carbs such as potatoes and beans, while shooting for a weight-loss promoting average of daily calories. I've come to believe that there is no magic in very low carb eating. Daily calorie restriction has worked well for me in the past, regardless of the type of foods I eat. Lower carb eating does, however, aid in maintaining a normal blood sugar, and I feel good eating that way. I just won't be adding back the worst of it, e.g., cake, candy, and chips! I'll be posting in other areas; best wishes to all! BTW, Miss Slimindisguise (Angela)...you...are...gorgeous!

Thank you, Dawn! You and the other JUDDD veterans are such inspiration! Yes, palpitations are scary to me, particularly as I've been treated recently for an arrhythmia. Confounding. Trying to reduce to improve health, which seems to cause additional health problems. Sheesh. I'll continue slow and steady, and feel great in the process.

Emma, wow...you seriously gave my morale a boost today. Sincere thanks for your kind words I am a 40 year old woman who has struggled to like herself her entire life. Self esteem is not my strong point at my thinnest or heavest. Gorgeous, huh, not a word I associate with myself but it sure brightened this rainy day.

I'm curious if how strict the vets have been with their up days. According to the calculator, I should be eating 418 calories on my DD and 2089 cals on my UD. I can definitely see myself going under that up day number many days--especially on days I cook and eat at home.

I've been increasing the amount of kcals that I eat since reaching my original goal weight (reverse dieting) so I'm careful to eat the amount that I plan on UDs.

If you're starting out in WLM, then the general advice, based on the experience of people here, is to eat your UD kcals. A day's variation here or there is no big deal, but, if it becomes a habit, it reduces your options later if you need to decrease your kcal intake (either, because you've lost sufficient weight that you'd plateau'd and need to re-adjust the calculations for a new weight - or for related reasons).

Dr Johnson now doesn't advise a range for UDs outside of the woolly advice to eat 'normally' and not over-do it. However, the experience here is that you need to keep a decent spread of kcals (at least 1000) between your DD and UD and that a good UD sets you up well for a more peaceful/straightforward DD.

As SlowSure says, people here seem to have found it better to stick to the numbers, but other similar plans, like Krista Varady’s, ”Every Other Day Diet” or Michael Mosley’s 5:2 variant don’t specify any up day calorie number, and don’t calculate individual down day levels. Varady has done some studies using her approach, and it worked in her study group. I’ve never counted my up day calories. For down days I have just done the odd spot check, but what I eat then is much simpler, with less scope for big variations.

I stuck to my UD numbers religiously in WLM. I'm not one who would undereat regularly. However, when I reduced UD numbers too soon, I stalled. When I went back to eating at or near the calculated UD numbers, I lost again.

I would try to eat up those calories as often as you can. The nice filling UDs makes this plan doable for the long run. We obviously ate that much daily (or more) sometimes to get where we need to lose weight. I'm a big believer in the biggest spread possible between UD and DD.

Right now I'm not counting my UD calories and it seems to be working well for me.

I have very specific food desires on UDs and I just try to make sure I eat what I want and I don't put any restrictions on myself or on any foods or food groups. I have loosely been trying to get more lean protein in, but that's not too hard for me because I love all things protein.

Have to say I have never had a problem with binging, so YMMV. Well, I used to have a potato chip problem. If I opened a bag of Lay's I used to not be able to quit! But, JUDDD has healed me of that problem totally. I can have two or three chips and say, "meh. that's enough." Cool.

My UD number according to Dr. J's calculator is 2000 and I'm pretty sure I eat that if not more so I'm good. I keep DDs as low as I can, so there is a big spread between DD/UD numbers.

! I agree with the others, to try and eat at least close to your UD numbers. I stalled when I lowered too soon too. And now I'm wondering if I've slowed my metabolism by going too low, and I don't want to have to live the rest of my life restricting every day.

Great advice here. If you at least try to get in your UD calories you are less likely to feel hungry on your DDs.

And, Angela. You are gorgeous.

Hi JUDDD Buds. I've come back for some accountability. Having trouble with mind over matter trying to get the first DD in. Have been through several surgeries and diagnostic procedures since early Feb and had no trouble fasting as needed but have been earing nonstop during recovery. So, tomorrow is another first DD. Maybe someone watching will help me stick to ot.

Monday up day

Ok so I officially began on Thursday with an at 181.6 I am not convinced this weigh it accurate as I jumped a good bit the next morning but it could be TOM related...but here is how it has went so
3/27 UD 181.6
3/28 DD 184.6
3/29 UD 182.4
3/30 DD 184.2
3/31 UD 183.2

Had a very busy first day back to school and my have a substitute assistant this week and did not get to eat until lunch...could be a good thing. I am at 1094 calories so far thanks to my 240 calorie afternoon snack. Not sure what I will finish out with to get to my 1884 calories....Tomorrow will be my first DD at work....so hopefully I will stay busy again and not think about eating. Praying this works and hoping for a woosh when TOM goes away....

This seems really doable and I really want it to work. I appreciate everyones words of advice and enjoy coming on here it keeps me motivated and accountable.

So what do all you March Newbies when you are not counting your DD and UDs....

I am a k4 teacher by day, Thirty One Consultant at night, i love to scrapbook, craft, travel when I can afford it, camp, bargain shop....I am a mom of 3...we call it the "The 3 Ring Circus" I have an almost 13 year old 10 and 8 year old who go to the private school where I teach and am married almost 19 years to my sweetie.

How bout ya'll,
Angela

Angela-

I'm a licensed clinical social worker and credentialed alcohol substance abuse counselor (LCSW and CASAC-T). I have been a therapist for most of my career, but in 2009 I started doing some Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement work (In mental health). In May of 2013 I was promoted to the Director of the Compliance Department at the Mental Health Agency where I work. I do some consultation and training for a smaller agency that specializes in work with LGBTQ folks. I'm in the hiring process at a major hospital in NYC to review their medical records. I've been married to DW since May of 2008. No children yet, but I hope to have one soon. I love to travel and also enjoy crafts, jewelry making and scrapbooking. Unfortunately there is rarely time for the last 3 items.
