Emma: If Carol's are like mine, they are wired into the electrical system. Permanent. The only way to change them would be to hire an electrician, put a new hole in the wall, then hire contractors to re-plaster and cover up the old holes! Expensive!

I'm with you in the sense that I just don't get why in the world they would regulate that they have to be put up so high on the ceiling? I mean, yes, you will be warned of smoke and maybe saved from a fire, which is a rarity.

But if you have to climb up there and risk your life every few months or even every 12 months to change the battery and you fall and break your neck and die.....well, interesting trade off? I think the risk of falling is a higher percentage than my house catching on fire!!!

You guys are so sweet to worry about me! I didn't go up the ladder! I'm askeered!

I still haven't heard back from the FD, which kind of irks me. I mean, it isn't an emergency, but you'd think they could call back within 3 hours.

Mine isn't hard wired - it just has a 9V battery. In reading about it, they recommend changing the battery every 6 months. Yeah, like that's going to happen! I also found a 10 year lithium battery one. You can't change the battery at all on that one - the whole detector must be replaced, but at only $20 every 10 years, I think I'll get that one and have a guy come out and do that.

I have puzzled over why they put it ALL the way at the top. I realize smoke rises and will collect and pool around the detector, but doesn't the smoke have to rise up and go past where a lower detector is? I don't know. I just know I've regretted that thing ever since the first time it chirped many years ago.

Oh yeah......it has stopped chirping. Does that mean it's going to start back up later? Like in the middle of the night? Or did it completely die? Or is it the calm before the storm?

DW and DS got back late Saturday night from DS' competition. DW was tired and cranky from the long trip. As soon as they came in, I told her "I need to tell you something". Before I got any further, a little orange furball comes trotting out to see what all the commotion was about.

DW was not amused.

However, the kitty is such a sweetie that DW got over it quickly.

However, the name "Sheena" got veto-ed quickly by both DW and DS. After much discussion, she is now Tiger Lily, Lily for short.

On the plus side, I did finally see her eat this morning. She was probably eating before this but it made me feel better to actually see her do it. She is getting along great with the other cats, too, so it doesn't look like we will have to take advantage of the shelter's 30 day return policy.

Great news all around, Frosty, and I love the name Tiger Lily! That is great!

Nice man from the Fire Department came and changed my smoke detector battery for me. Whew! I feel better now! He says they do that all the time. Who knew?

LOL, Frosty! That's good to know, Carol. I might have to use my local FD's resources one day.

Awesome Carol. Was he cute?

Frosty, my tiny, teeny, little, itty bitty Great Dane/Mastiff mix is named Lily. Her real name is Lillebitte which is Danish for "Little Bit."

Frosty--I also love the name Tiger Lily. And the look in her eyes is already much different from the earlier picture! She likes it at your place.

Carol--I was thinking the same thing about smoke rising!

Yam--I've got an old 'fifties era colonial. What is this hard-wired smoke detector of which you speak?

My wife tends to call kittens "little bits". In fact, I probably called Cali "Bitz" more than her real name.

Yeah, she's moved right in. She's already taking over my bed at night. She spent most of last night tucked right up against my side, which was fine unless I wanted to move. Then I got cat grumbles.

Don't climb the ladder Carol!

So pleased DW has fallen fro Tiger Lily, and that the other cats have taken to her too. That is a such a relief.
