Looking for a low calorie but filling protein or snack bar?

Oh and one that doesn't taste like cardboard? ;) Once things start warming up and I'm out and about more, I want to have more DD snacks I can put in my purse to prevent me from caving into to street food carts or my beloved .99 cent pizza slices in the city! LOL! One of my go to snacks is from Ostrim, they are 80 calorie ostrich/beef sticks and/or jerky. Soooo yummy. High in protein and only 80 cals. So I thought that with maybe a low fat/cal string cheese, baby carrots and a protein/snack bar would be great DD purse snacks.

100 calorie almond packs are good ones to keep in your purse, too :)

Oh good call!!! I love almonds and the 100 calorie packs will prevent me from eating a whole can...which I can do because I love them so. But prepackaged like that would be perfect! Thank you!

Have you tried Quest bars? They are delicious, and between 160-180 calories per bar, 1-4 net carbs depending on flavor. They're also sweetened with stevia. :)

calichris 02-20-2014 11:13 PM

I'm going to try those Quest bars one of these days, but I have been keeping Fiber One protein bars in a desk drawer at work, because it seemed like a good combo of protein/fiber/lower in cals. The caramel nut is 130 calories, 7 grams protein.

zipp2play 02-21-2014 06:49 AM

I love the quest bars. 20g of protein. For me, the chocolate ones are gross. I love the apple pie one (170c) Strawberry Cheesecake (160c) and the Cinnamon one (170c).

For protein shakes, if you are taking ready made, my kids love the Slim Fast Protein shake. 180c 20 grams of protein. We have six 4 packs auto shipped to our house by Amazon monthly. It is a nice go to! I don't have time with 2 teenagers to blend one, so we get the ready made.

KeirasMom 02-21-2014 07:03 AM

Another vote for Quest bars. YUM! I like the chocolate ones. They keep me full for hours and with 20 grams of protein and most of them between 160-180 calories, they're perfect. Sometimes I have one for breakfast AND one for dinner on a DD!

BroadwayBaby 02-21-2014 01:16 PM

I haven't found the Quest bars yet. I do like the Fiber One bars. A cast mate brought them to rehearsal and gave me one and it was good. Not bad calorie bargain either. I will keep looking for Quest bars tho...THANK YOU FOR THE SUGGESTION! XOXO

calichris 02-21-2014 06:57 PM

The Quest site has a store locator. :) Apparently near me only some Vitamin Shoppes carry them, but all the GNC stores do.

Here the GNC stores charge $10 more per box! I don't remember the difference in individual bars, but I do remember I refused to ever buy them from GNC!

Carly 02-22-2014 08:16 AM

I can't find them at any of the stores I frequent regularly so I order them.

Rizzo76 02-22-2014 08:57 AM

I've just discovered Nakd bars, which are entirely natural (also gluten-free, wheat-free and mostly dairy-free too). They use dates, cashews, almonds, etc. and cold-press them into tasty snack bars. I've only tried the Banana Bread flavour so far, but it was delish and I'm going to try the others soon. The oat-based ones are 90-100 calories and the ones with more nuts or fruit are around 140-160 calories.

I wasn't sure whether they would have them in the US or not, but a quick Google search for 'nakd bars US' brings up a site where you can order them, with free delivery until the end of this month, too. Makes a change from the typical 'healthy' cereal bars that are loaded with artificial stuff...

Okay, ladies, entirely way TMI, but do the quest bars cause bloating?

Cliff bars and Lara bars (for whatever reason) make me bloat horribly.

Anyone have that issue with the quest bars?

No, not with quest bars, but fiber one bars... I can't touch those. Bloat and gas like no ones business.

BroadwayBaby 02-22-2014 05:29 PM

Wonder if I can get some free samples? LOL!

gotitnow 02-22-2014 09:02 PM

I once made the mistake of eating one before getting on a 5 hour airplane ride. Oh dear God ...

Rizzo76 02-24-2014 11:44 AM

Ooh, SlimFast bars were like that for me, as well! The soups and shakes were fine - they obviously used a different, soluble form of fibre in those - but the bars used to trigger my IBS like nothing on earth! I soon learned when not to eat those...

LadyKT 02-24-2014 02:41 PM

I love my quest bars...but i find myself eating more than one at a sitting :o

Yep...i have problems!

ASHLEY2HAWAII 02-24-2014 02:43 PM

I love the Nature valley protein bars, not low carb, but really tasty!

Yes, for me. The quest bars cause that gut twisting, double over in pain, internal gas.

I love these too! I use them to help stabilize my/DD12's bloodsugar when we crash. They work perfectly.

I buy my Quest bars by the case from Amazon. I bought individual at GNC till I found which ones I liked. Now, I go by the case! Love them!

calichris 02-27-2014 09:57 PM

I have a box of variety pack Quest bars coming in the mail, but then I saw them at the gym, too! So far I have tried peanut butter and jelly, which was kind of artificial tasting to me, and the chocolate chunk, which I can't give a fair review of since I tried microwaving it and accidentally left it in too long. :o Then I tried the chocolate chip cookie, and that is my favorite so far. :yummy: To try tomorrow: oreo!

Actually, I did place an order for a free 2-bar sample. I thought I used the official Quest Bar site, but not sure. If you google "quest bars free sample" you should be able to find it.

17 slices of Hormel Turkey Pepperoni is 70 cals; a Sargento light string cheese is 50 cals.
Slice or string the cheese, wrap in a pepperoni slice and dip in a low-cal maranara sauce (say 2T @ 15 cals) and you have a protein packed and tasty snack or mini meal :)

Sometimes I'll snack on 3 Suzie's thin cakes (38 calories) with one LC wedge (35 calories) and 15 grams - yes, I weigh out 1/2 a serving - of Hormel Turkey Pepperoni (35 calories). It's very satisfying. I do this on UDs, too.

jenericstewart 02-28-2014 10:02 AM

i'm anxious to try the quest bars. i found a free sample link (via google), so i'll get to try them before doling out my hard earned money. thanks for the idea, gals.
