What's your take?
I was raised on it.
Today I bought a gallon at the farmers market.
Now reading about it, think I might simmer heat it tmw for bacteria sake.
Slowsure, anybody?
Does anyone here drink raw milk?

I would not drink raw milk. Ever.
There are different methods you can use for pasteurization, as long as you have a timer and a thermometer. Essentially, the lower the temperature you choose, the longer you need to hold it at said temperature.
Efficacy of Various Pasteurization Time/Temperatures
My Master's thesis was based on pasteurizing bovine colostrum to eliminate pathogens without altering the immunological impact. We heated the colostrum to 60*C (140*F) for 60 minutes. In laboratory tests, this protocol eliminated E. coli, Listeria, Mycobacterium & Salmonella. In our field trials, the heat treated colostrum was culture negative and actually enhanced the immunological parameters of the receiving calves.
There is no nutritional benefit to raw milk, despite what Google will tell you. Many people confuse organic with raw (I'm not saying you are, just saying a lot of people think raw = organic, which it does not.)
Pasteurization eliminates E. coli 0157H7 - The Jack in the Box E. coli. 0157H7 is a normal flora in the bovine intestinal tract - meaning the bacteria does not make the cattle sick. How trusting are you that not a speck of poop made it into the milk? Pasteurization kills Listeria, Salmonella and the Mycobacterium spp. (tuberculosis, linked to Crones, leprosy).
Absolutely so not worth it. In my opinion.

I was raised on raw milk too.....I loved it. We got ours from a local farmer. Sometimes we ended up with a lot of cream that came to the top, so we made our own butter....loved that too.

Completely with Yennie on this. Although it tastes delightful from the right sort of breed and at particular times of year, the relative risks are not worth it for me, my family or community.

*NB. I do eat raw milk cheeses - however, this are aged (I eat the 6months to 4yrs old ones, typically), and, post-fermentation and maturation, there is (for me) an acceptably low risk of the relevant pathogens Yennie mentions. I wouldn't be comfortable with a woman of child-bearing age eating young/unmature/unripe raw milk cheese nor the usual demographics at risk of immunological compromise.*

I drank about a half of cup,of milk before hearing from you all.
About 15 mins post drinking the milk on a empty stomach, I was ending my fast on a healthy food:)... Ha.
I found myself on the thorn wondering if the diarrhea that came suddenly was in head, really.
Warning...TMI
I only have BM's in the am, if I'm lucky.
So another vist thru the night on the thorn......I will NOT drink it raw ever again!
Strange since I was raised on it...but having not eating for say 19 hours maybe pushed the envelope.
I'll be googling how to pasteurize milk.

There are many folks who swear by raw milk and say it's more easily digested--even by people who are lactose intolerant. I haven't ever drank it, but it is sold at one store here in my city. I'm not sure how dangerous it is, but would think twice after reading Yennie's post lol.

I drink raw goat milk and haven't killed myself yet. I have a dairy heifer and when she has a calf I will consume raw cow milk, make butter and use the cream in my coffee. To each his own.

For sure, but presumably you're drinking the milk of your own goats, that you raise, you know how clean they are and sterilize (or not) your own equipment. Therefore if your milk ends up contaminated, you're likely to know about it (oops, goat berry in the bucket) and/or only have yourself to blame. Presumably you're also not milking an animal that may be ill for your own consumption, and your own cow will be cared for in the same fashion.

Self collecting for personal consumption, while theoretically possessing the same bacterial exposure risks, IMO dramatically reduces the chances of contamination. Compared to production farming, and the flinging poo, lack of complete sanitation, etc.

I drink raw milk and my family loves it. We have 4 kids ranging in age from 8 til 17 and me and DH drink it too. Love it so much, if not for the cost we would drink ONLY raw milk. Thank goodness we can get it legally in our state. For that I am very very grateful.

UPDATE
 
I used a make shift double broiler to heat the raw milked to 145 degrees for 30 mins. One pot inside another larger pot. Strained the raw milk first.
It took so long to do the process, refill, repeat.
If I do it again I will buy a real set up.
The results, I got the drink last night and have to say.
The milk was wonderful. It must be rated whole milk x 4. Crackmilk!
Not good for high cholesterol, but it was a experience.
My friends I've decussed this with say they wouldn't be afraid of drinking raw milk. Some were raised drinking it. If cleanliness procedures followed.
I plan to go see the milk farmers set up someday.
I read the farmer just got two new cows so, he must be a small farmer, which I like.
As we know to each their own.
Some will have cosmetic surgery, some will say they would never have cosmetic surgery. I'm one that would never have that surgery. Just sayin:).
The risk of having a surgery, now that I would run from.
But I've had two major surgeries. Tons of surgerys in my mouth, yikes the list goes on and on.
Have read humans don't need milk, we who drink milk are treating our self like babies:) I'm sure those people don't drink beer or wine either.

He asked me to eat two eggs a week. We have chickens. I've given him eggs, he understand me more. Seeing our gorgeous colored eggs. he has high C himself.
Right Sirtain I've read that too.
My granny had high C.
So I'm blessed In that way.

We have 2L of raw Jersey milk delivered every week, but the only way I use milk is in cooking or heated for coffee, so although I don’t object to drinking it raw, in practice it’s always boiled.

It's a balance thing I'm trying to do.

Ei, the one store that I know of that sells raw milk here gets it from a local farmer. We are a relatively small city (about 60,000 ppl), so I suspect it's pretty clean. Plus, it's not a big store, but a natural food store built inside a bookstore lol. I may still have to try it! Especially after your description. I'm not a big milk drinker, but this I might have to try.

Mine comes from a health food store who gets it from a local dairy. I love it. My family loves it. I say you should try it :yummy:

It's illegal to sell raw milk here in Canada. I know in many regions they don't pasteurize milk but they do boil it before drinking it (that's how I've had it).

I'm loving the milk smack.
Drank some just before bed. I had only had 800 last night after evening kitchen closing.
I was full, but knew Today would be a rough day if I needed have something else to eat/drink. So the milk came to mind, cream on top, ice cold hit the spot. I slept like a bay:)
Today doing well only noon, witching time getting nearer. I feel strong though.
Diet coke in hand:)

I'm no longer a milk drinker but I also grew up drinking milk from my uncle's farm and we loved it. I remember my mom bringing milk home one day in a carton and us kids drank some and thought YUCK! We would always let it sit awhile and spoon the cream from the top. Mom used it for cooking or in their coffee.

These days I wouldn't hesitate to drink it if I felt comfortable with the cleanliness of the source. I'd be much more concerned with drinking milk from cows that had been pumped full of hormones.

It's just been such a treat to have something so rich and organic to eat/drink, $6. Cheap
I'm making potato soup this evening, little bacon, with cornbread, oh yay.
I'll buy the milk again , and won't post about it promise:cry:
