Hehe! No, I didn't have the stomach for that (or the thighs, or the arms ). I got a Speedo sports bra/tank and skin tight workout capris. They are supposedly acceptable for the test.

I've got my Bod Pod results, and Christina's original post was so good, I'm going to use hers as a template for mine.

I purchased the 3 test package for $79, so I'll have 2 follow up tests to see how I'm progressing. The owner/operator was very professional and helpful, and suggested I be retested in 6 to 8 weeks. I'll wait and see how much I've lost in that time, and also if I can see/feel my body changing.

I found out that at 179 lbs (on his scale - mine said 176.5 post UD this morning in the same clothes) and 5 foot 4 inches, my lean body mass is 60.2% and weighs 107.9 pounds. My body fat percentage is 39.8% and weighs 71.1 pounds. He also took some measurements so those can be tracked over time too.

Here's the valuable information I found out:

1. If I don't lose lean body mass, my goal weight is much too low. The ranges he provided were:
Risky (High Body Fat) - >40% women: 30% men
Excess Fat - 30.1 - 40% women: 20.1 - 30% men
Moderately Lean - 22.1 - 30% women: 12.1 - 20% men
Lean - 18.1 - 22% women: 8.1 - 12% men
Ultra Lean - 15 - 18% women: 5 - 8% men
Risky (Low Body Fat) - <15% women: <5% men

He noted that the Moderately Lean category for women currently only includes 5% of women (I'm assuming statistically in the U.S.) and that it is a good, healthy, and attractive place to be. He said lots of us shoot for the Lean category, which only currently includes 1% of women, and is tough to get to and maintain.

If I didn't lose any LBM, I could be in the Moderately Lean category in 18 to 21 more pounds, at 158 to 161 pounds. He said he tested a women earlier this morning who had lost 11 pounds, but increased her LBM by 2 pounds, so 13 pounds of fat loss. She was around my age and weight, and training very moderately 3 times a week. Very encouraging!

I do know that I'll likely lose some LBM as I keep losing, but my goal is that it is a very very small amount. I'm going to keep my goal weight at 140 for now, under the assumption that I will lose some LBM, but I'll adjust it up if it becomes obvious that I can. Just knowing these numbers makes me feel like I'm closer to goal that I thought, though.

2. I can now do a much more accurate daily calorie expenditure calculation knowing my body fat percentage. The body fat testing report said my RMR (resting metabolic rate) is 1397, and with just a sedentary lifestyle I burn 1726. At Low Active, which I would consider myself, it is 2115.

I told the guy I'd lost around 140 pounds and he said, "Oh wow, I wish we could've tracked you all along the way!" He was very interested and receptive in how I'd done it, and asked some questions about IF and ADF. He noted that eating adequate protein is key, and I told him I'd been focusing on that.

Overall, I feel like I'm on the right track, and don't really need to be making any dramatic changes in what I'm doing. I will start my Tabata workouts on my stationary bike, as well as SuperSlow resistance training with my new restistance bands in February. I've also restarted doing Callanetics.

Like Christina, I'm so glad I did it! It couldn't have been easier, not at all embarrassing, and I feel like I'm now armed with some very good information. Whew!

Carol: Thank you for sharing all that great information! What good news to know that if you don't lose a lot of LBM you are waaaaaay closer to a healthy goal weight than you thought. Congratulations!

You have done such an amazing job already. Wow. Sounds like you had a great experience and that it was not scary at all!

I just found out that an imaging center near me does the DXA body composition scan for $95 with $75 follow ups. That isn't pocket change but seems doable. Since I am turning 50 here in a few days, it seems like a good time for a baseline.

nice!

I'm getting a DEXA scan soon (for medical reasons), and I'm trying to figure out how to get the tech to slip in a BF test in there too, so I can compare it to my hydrostatic. Probably won't happen, but I can schem--er, I mean, dream, right?

That's not a horrible price, especially for the gold standard in tests. I think that's a very good birthday present to yourself. Can't wait to hear about it!

Absolutely worth a try! If your doctor added that to the order, would it be very much more expensive?

Thanks for all your kind words everyone. I still need to really sit down and digest all the data, and compare it to some other guidelines to see how similar or different they are. And to really think through how to jumpstart my losses again. I just haven't had the quiet time today to do all the perusing I would have liked to do yet.

Would you mind sharing the name of the location, seeing as we're in the same state. Maybe, just maybe, it might be closer than the tank guy. Which, BTW, we have a tank in Western WA so thats something to look into as well if he comes close to you and the DXA is out of your reach right now. Just google body fat test and click on the "Seattle" calendar.

I think your tank guy is the same as ours. Brian? He said he lives in WA, and drives down to do SoCal tests a couple of weeks per month.

I'm waiting for the February calendar to fill, so I can schedule my next test.

Yep! Brian!! Super nice guy. Actually lives in the town I grew up in, about 2 hours south of me. And most of the bookings he does in WA are even further south. I keep telling him if he would just let me come to his house, it would be the closest for me! LOL!

I'm also stalking his Feb calendar. I was thinking I could make Feb 1 work but now I'm not so sure. The monkey has been invited to his first birthday party for his "girlfriend" from preschool so I feel as though its imperative we attend.

Well drat. Never mind then. If I'm not willing to drive 2 hours south, I'm certainly not going to drive 8 hours to Spokane! Thanks though!

Well, here, I thought the truck was going to be in our town next month but it seems they decided to bypass us! This means, I'll have to drive 107 miles south! I guess, it gives me a good excuse to spend sometime with a friend!

We should all get a referral discount for each other. Ntombi would get mine - she's the one who first directed me to the tanks.

LCG, I'm so pleased that you've had your assessment. That's a useful set of results to guide your future decisions about your goal weight, your kcal intake, activity levels etc.

I'm intrigued by the diversity in LBM that we're reporting.
SlowSure LBM <<77lbs
Calichris LBM 126.6lbs
LCG LBM 107.9lbs
Yennie LBM 112.6lbs
Ntombi LBM 153lbs
Planelman LBM 161.6lbs with a Muscle Mass about the same as my LBM 76.5lbs

To me, this highlights the importance of retaining as much LBM as you can, rather than attempting to fix it retrospectively or most of the way into the weight loss journey.

Unlike those of you who are now upwardly revising your goal weights, based on your LBM, my notional target goals (to reduce the BF% to acceptable or even 'obese' levels) are so unrealistically low that I couldn't begin to contemplate them.

I'll put the details in my assessment thread so as not to hijack this one, but, in summary, even if I weighed 107lbs (cusp of being underweight by BMI because I'd be BMI 18), I'd still be obese at 30%, assuming I'd lost only BF and no LBM.

Ideal Weight and Calorie Calculator.
Using the calculator that Christina links, to be 20% BF, I'd have to weigh 84-87lbs (BMI <14), assuming, again, negligible loss of LBM. Obviously - that just isn't feasible. I'd have doubts about whether I could get down to 107lbs and more doubts as to whether it's reasonable, never mind 84-87lbs.

Looking at the differences in LBM has decided me tho' - even if new data from a DXA might just add confusion, I genuinely need to know if I've so much less LBM than the other women here.

Definitely get a second test to either confirm the first test or provide evidence that it was wrong. The test are not perfect and I've read post when I searched where a test like the bod pod had such off the chart results the tester agreed there was something wrong and had to use a second pod to get a more correct result. And definitely retest before making a decision that could negatively affect your health.

I don't blame you. That drive sucks.

I'm betting there are plenty of similar imaging centers on the coast (Seattle area). With just doing a quick Google search for "DXA body composition testing seattle" , it looks like the Washington Institute of Sports Medicine may be a place that it can be done for a reasonable price
