IF discussed on Diane Rehm Show

Just heard on the car radio that yesterday one of her shows was on Intermittent Fasting. So, when I got home, I looked up the show in her archives. Listening right now.

The guests are Dr. Michael Mosley, Dr. Valter Longo, Dr. Mark Mattson. Ms. Rehm mentioned that since she last had Micheal Mosley on her program (not sure when that was) she has been doing 5:2. She said she has lost twenty pounds, and feels great!

It was a good program. Not much that we here don't already know(smarties that we are!), but I am just glad that more people are getting to hear of it, and in a normal fashion. Diane is always very respectful of her guests, and lets them actually finish what they are saying, and not insist on a sound bite.

This is the best interview on IF research yet, with the emphasis not being just about the weight loss.

Maybe it's the two glasses of champagne that Diane admits to having on her fasting days that makes her feel so great?

Interesting that they were so positive for IF - very few naysayers.

This was very interesting. A much better representation of all the benefits of the diet, not just weight loss. Although they did give weight loss its due, which is great. I love hearing about all the studies they're undertaking, and it sounds like maybe lots more are in store.

And champagne every DD? I could definitely get into that one!

Our NHS can be very bon viveur at times - you might be startled at the number of oncologists and neurologists who recommend champagne or similar on a regular basis for various conditions/people.

John Diamond (author of 'C' because cancer is for cowards too and the deceased husband of Nigella Lawson) was advised to drink champagne during the treatment of his mouth/tongue cancer.

Love it! We have been to friends for dinner the last 4 nights. Champagne was the drink offered before dinner. Of course, given the choice, that is all I would drink! Except for a MaiTai or two as Yam Yam knows!

I read somewhere that Rose Kennedy only drank Champagne.......

I forgot to mention, I am fascinated by fasting for 2 or 3 days per month straight, and eating "normally" the rest of the month. I'm not sure I could trust myself to do that. I know they are doing longer fasts for cancer research and treatment, but I'd be interested if this would be a viable option for weight maintenance. And would the SIRTs and health benefits stick around.

The SIRT1s should be affected by a month of normal eating, but longer fasts have different health benefits associated with them, that might balance it out.

I did a 8-day fast for non-weight reasons last month, and I am interested in doing another long fast in the next few months. But I don't necessarily want to do it for weight reduction(though I DID go down nicely during my eight days and if I hadn't followed it up with Christmas eating, don't think I would have rebounded that much) so I am having some difficulty figuring out when I want to do it.

I had done 3-4 day fasts before, but still, I was astonished at how easy it was. I think being fat-adapted through low-carb eating helped, and also, my JUDDD experiences, but I think mostly, we 21st century humans just have a distorted view of what our bodies can and can't do.

I know that for those who have specific medical conditions that make fasting a no-no, it is not the same, but I think most people could do long fasts PHYSICALLY. It is the MENTAL aspect of it that is the stumbling block.

JUDDD gives us a good advantage there, as we have already learned that 'Hunger is not an emergency'. And we are used to finding other things to do besides eating from our Down Days.

LoCarbGal- if you ever want friendly support while fasting, throw me a line. Maybe I could even do it along with you, if our schedules co-operate.

I would be interested in longer fasts as well, but I wonder what I might do to prepare? I do know that my body could handle it, and you're right, Sirtain, it's my head that would cause the most problems. How do you get around that, I wonder? The only times in the past that I've been able to go days without eating (nearly anything) were the beginnings of great romances.

Hmm. Have you seen those decks of playing cards with suggestions for romantic interludes on each card? Maybe get one of those and your boyfriend's cooperation for the first few days of a fast!

Years ago I did a 7 day fast just to prove I could. I did not lose a single pound. Thought that was interesting but after the first few days it was easy. I would have continued since I had no appetite but DH was getting worried.

Sirtain, it would be nice to have a fasting buddy, if I ever decide to try it. I'll be sure to let you know and see if we can coordinate. I'm looking at it more as a maintenance strategy, so it's a ways off for me. But your experience with your 8 day fast and how much you lost is certainly enticing.

Adi, now that is inner strength, to do it just to prove you could. Wow!

Sirtain & Adi, when you talk about 7-8 day fast, is that a No-calorie or just under 500 calories fast? Just curious as I struggle with DDs sometimes (but then I seem to struggle with wanting to eat more on UDs too)!

Me too, JD. Interestingly, Varady suggests two DDs in a row to break a stall. I've never had the willpower to do more than one, so far. I thought I had yesterday in check but probably was over 2500.

I've done that many times this month already! I know my weaknesses: bread & butter, cookies (any type of sugar really) and nuts. Once I touch any of these it sort of unhinges me I think exercise is the only thing saves me from too much damage. That's why I haven't even gone back to what I weighed in April 2012! However, I do know, I'm not going to give up because I don't want to be prediabetic again. Although, Nancy's announcement in another thread scares me especially after all that wgt she lost!

I didn't overeat any one thing either. I just ate a high calorie lunch/breakfast, and then I had wine before and after dinner.

Adillenal- wow! I wonder what was going on in your body that you didn't lose any weight over seven days. Very interesting. Did you gain or stay the same when you resumed eating, do you remember?

Jdforshort- I do zero calories. I do not think I could do many days of 500K in a row. I find eating a little harder than eating nothing, and doing it for so long would be killer. Also, I think it might put you into the low-calorie-reduced-metabolism zone. maybe not, since it is SO FEW calories, but I don't know that I would want to try.

With complete fasting, after a few days, my desire for food (as opposed to the ACT of eating) just goes away. I would have to say there is very little will power required. (Though I am happy to take any credit I can get! )

This was over eight years ago but I did a water fast for 7 days since I had been reading so much about fasting. By the third day there was no hunger and it was easy after that. Oh and I had a few Diet COkes but that was all.

I was at a healthy weight at that time so I didn't need to lose any and I didn't gain anything after I resumed eating although I eased back into and I was pretty low fat low carb at that time.

Start Date: JUDDD 1/1/12 + LCHF 12/1/13 (controlling diabetes)
Due to parental emergencies, I had several DD - never get around to eating on UD - DD three day 'fasts'. By the fourth day - which should have been an UD - I had no appetite nor interest in eating. And I felt great.

Three days with about 600 calories spread out randomly did not actually make a difference in my weight loss rate at the end of the week.

I do fervently believe, for those who can safely do it, fasting does offer important health benefits beyond weight loss.
