WOE: JUDDD - EOD/STILLMANS :)
Start Date: June 2013
JUDDD & Fertility

Hey I'm after some advice re alternate day fasting & fertility. My husband and I are trying to conceive and I mentioned to a friend that we were and she said she had read this study on how JUDDD affects fertility negatively.

I love JUDDD, I feel great doing the plan and it's the only thing I've ever been able to stick to but I don't want to do something that might impact us having a baby - I would just come back to JUDDD after

Has anyone been in a similar position?

Thank you for reading xxx

I will hopefully be trying to conceive in the next few months.
I have heard the IF can cause issues, but never read anything personally.
I'm 37 and have PCOS so for me being thin is better than being overweight in terms of conceiving (I think).

Thanks for the replies - I can understand to some degree how fasting could impact fertility - in that fasting allows the body to rest so some things become lower priority - like ovulation, I'm just not sure how that would work in practice.

I'm not sure if this related or just coincidence but I was JUDDing all of December and my cycle was much longer than normal 39 instead of 30 days - hmmm.

I think I might just take a more relaxed approach so rather than full fasting on DD (which I have been doing) il stick to say 500 calorie DD's

Ellie, first of all, GOOD LUCK with your kiddie plans! How exciting!

Next, have you tried posting your question on Dr. Krista Varady's FB page or website for her "Every Other Day Diet"? She is the one who knows about or has conducted so many studies on this WOE. She may have some information she could share.

Does your friend have a link to the study? Would be interesting to read, to see what the parameters were.

Also, remember that whether or not ADF affects fertility, what is important to YOU, is does it affect YOUR fertility? Are you tracking your temperatures/mucus/etc? And optimizing your nutrition?

And of course, as you are so close to your goal, putting JUDDD on hold for a while should be no problem, either way. If you are lucky, your baby will suck that extra five pounds right off of you!

Kitty,
I agree that trying to find more information, like the link to the study, or posting a question on Dr Varady's page is a good idea.
There have been so few human studies on JUDDD, and IF, that I'm a little skeptical that there is a mainstream, quality study that your friend just happened to read about IF and fertility. Seems a little hokey to me. I'm sure if someone searched you could find someone pontificating on how IF *must* be bad for fertility because <insert commonly believed bogus mainstream junk about IF here>.
I think, as Sirtain said, the most important thing is how does IF/JUDDD affect YOU!!
Best of luck to you!!

She said she read it in a magazine - she wasn't very specific...
You are right about tracking, I haven't been but I will be this month, we are starting temping, OPK's - it will be interesting to see the results.

I am not as close to goal as I was I'm around 150 now after Christmas and that was after JUDDDing up to the 20th - I ate a lot lol

Just in case anyone reads this looking for some advice. I actually got pregnant the month after writing this post which was two months of trying & whilst doing JUDDD with fully fasted down days. So I'm guessing JUDDD didn't negatively impact fertility.
I had my baby 4 weeks ago & will be returning to JUDDD soon as I have about 28lb's I need to lose.

Congrats! I have not done JUDD but I have done a VLCD. We'd been TTC for a long time and I was a few months out of my 2nd miscarriage when I decided to do the VLCD. My periods had been irregular since the miscarriage.

While eating VLC I actually skipped a period but when I went back to maintenance my periods were suddenly regular and normal. But it still took a while to conceive... about 6 months. Ironically I'd given up TTC so started having a couple glasses of wine with dinner. 1 cycle into wine drinking I was pregnant and am due in a 6 wks.

I know wine can have a positive cardiovascular effect on the body but I do wonder if either the VLCD which regulated my periods or the wine had anything to do with it! We'd been TTC more than 2 yrs.

Congratulations! I am glad to have found this post as it is a topic I am particularly interested in. I turn 30 in a few days and after my party (Nov 1) I think I might just see what happens. I am up for the 2 glasses of wine a night also
p.s. Since Judding/fasting, my cycles are like, 40 days long?? Does that mean you are ovulating longer??

I was going to post too but luckily read the thread through before hand. Congratulations! I accidentally got pregnant on JUDDD and my husband and I had the flu for most of the month! I definately have not found it to reduce fertility (obviously, this is for anyone reading later, as this is not your problem )

when i first started JUDDD, i had 3 months period free! i was so excited, hoping i'd have no more! i was 50, after all. not long after i implemented JUDDD, my monthly started in again, fast and furious, always faithful, and it stuck with me up until recently for two more years. i've thought all along that it was either losing weight OR JUDDD. it's since left me (yeah!), but i did have 2 more years where i could hope to have a baby the "regular" way.

i have PCOS. my kids are adopted. i have never even had a miscarriage. don't feel sorry for me cause i'm gonna be a grandma in march!!!! yessss
