Can I try a 48 hour fast?

I'd really interested in this. Not just for weight loss (which would be approx. a pound of fat) but after Christmas Day today, I feel stuffed! And I'd love to try a detox like this. Since I've pretty much had over two days worth of food today, will this be safe? There won't be any metabolism slowing will there, because I'm eating a LOT today!

Merry Christmas!

Hi Bapple. I doubt anyone can comment with confidence on whether or not a 48hr fast is OK for you because nobody knows if you have a relevant medical history that might contraindicate it. However, you had some good advice when you asked a similar question about 40 hour fasts.

For those whom it suits, ADF has some good health benefits. I hope you find a programme that suits your needs.

Well, fasting is pretty easy for me. As long as I'm occupied. So no problem there. ^-^ I heard there's actually a 3.6% increase in BMR, and I'm wondering if anyone's done this and had positive results both mentally and physically.

JUDDD is alternate day fasting, but there may be some support on other fasting sites/forums for longer fasts. I have never done more than one day, so I can't speak to the benefits or not.

I have done longer fasts. 3-4 days for autophagy, and recently, a 8-day fast for a medical reason.
I've always been very pleased with the results, both mental and physical, even if they weren't what i was expecting.
There is evidence to suggest that you do not get muscle-wasting to any great extent, or metabolism 'slow-down', until 10-14 days of a fast.
Unless you have specific contraindications for fasting, I think a two-day fast after a holiday feast should be no problem. Unless you really carbed it up, in which case the blood-sugar/insulin swing may generate some ferocious cravings.
However, any 'detox' effects of fasting would probably not occur in two days. You really need to be entering ketosis, and be burning stored fats for that to happen, and 48 hours will only get you to the edge of your liver glycogen.
However, it should give your digestive tract a nice rest. And who couldn't use that after a holiday?

Thanks, Sirtain! That helps. Would you suggest extending it to get a detox then?

I'm not sure how tall you are, but even at 5' you are very thin.
Perhaps fasting for 48+ hours is not a wise idea- jmho.

I wouldn't think a detox fast right after holiday eating would be the best. If you are very thin, as Carly points out, you might want to prepare for a detox, rather than just jump into it.

Why not just try a regular rotation, and see if you want to extend it to two days after the first one. Sometimes one Down Day is all it takes to feel back on track.

And although I would be the last person to discourage a longer fast if after researching it you feel it is best for you, I think the JUDDD alternation, is really great in how it encourages moderation, not desperation. Sometimes I think we fall into the trap of, 'if one is good, more is better' thinking.

And as Porgie says, 'It ain't necessarily so!".

Thanks, guys. I decided to have an 800kcal breakfast, and am having nothing but water until 48 hours later. This'll make me feel so much better. Then I'll have my UD, and then DD, and get back into rotation. You guys really helped.
