That would be me! Day one and am going to try to figure out what my calories need to be for today and an UD tomorrow. Thanks for the welcome!

LoCarbGal 12-01-2013 08:05 AM

:welcome: Susan! You've found the right place for tons of information and support. I'll look forward to getting to know you as you post more!

Welcome Susan!!!

Carly 12-01-2013 10:14 AM

Welcome Susan! You can get your UD/DD calories on Dr. Johnson's website.

Sirtain 12-01-2013 10:29 AM

Hey, Susan! Hope you have as much success with JUDDD as I have had. I am one of those who does NOT count on my Up Days, and I urge you to try it if it is something that appeals to you, especially if you are keeping low-carb.

Kissa 12-01-2013 10:57 AM

Welcome Susan, hope you have fun learning how much JUDDD helps you through the rest of the holidays.

Locarbarella 12-01-2013 11:32 AM

I think I introduced myself on the wrong thread. Oh well ...

Day 1 for me too. I set the calculator at 20% and no exercise per the advice of many here. It says 306/1532. So, today it will be 300.

So far so good. Black coffee and a hard boiled egg and I'm not ravenous. I have no idea what else I'll eat but I'm already a fan of the shirataki rice so maybe I'll make that for dinner with some soy sauce, chicken and veggies.

Here we go! I'm excited!

Carly 12-01-2013 12:00 PM

:welcome:! Post often- we are a great and supportive bunch!

LoCarbGal 12-01-2013 12:07 PM

So glad you found us Lowcarbarella! Are you going to stay LC while you do JUDDD, or add some carbs back in? Just asking because often there may be a few pounds of gain when you add them back. It's just water and glycogen stores building back up and will disappear, but I didn't want you to be shocked. Good luck!

Locarbarella 12-01-2013 12:40 PM

Thanks for the replies! You guys are all so nice.

Yes, I plan to stay Low Carb. I am all the way up the Atkins ladder so I already eat a variety of carbs, although I stay below 50 or so (usually below 40.) I don't eat sugar and only eat bread products very occasionally, but everything else in moderation. I just need to shake up my metabolism, I think, which has gotten used to a certain level of carbs and calories and just doesn't want to shake anything loose. IF has interested me for a long time for the health benefits anyway so I'm up for the challenge.

Also, this board is so filled with friendly, knowledgeable people that I couldn't help but want to join you all. ;)

Flossyliz 12-01-2013 12:42 PM

Welcome Susan and Lowcarbarella!

I did 300/1500 rotations, as per Dr J's calculator, quite comfortably till I got to maintenance. Last winter I owed my JUDDD success almost entirely to shirataki noodles! However, I'm not LC and I don't exercise at all.

I hope you enjoy your JUDDD journey. :welcome:

I think it is part on the JUDDD magic... it makes us generally happy and friendly! How could one not be having an UD every other day.

Welcome Newbies, I am almost two weeks in and have not lost yet, which I believe is due to reintroducing Carbs. I have maintained over the last two weeks that included Thanks giving and a night out to Outback that included 1/3 of an order of Aussie Cheese fries, bread, and 3 Alice Springs Chicken quesadilla triangles. Either one of those days would have translated into gains on the scale the next day but not on JUDDD as both of these events were on UDs. I have not got my down days quite low enough either.

I cannot imagine this WOE of eating not being a welcome change, you feel great, and with careful planning I am finding that I don't have to face the deprived feeling I sometimes felt on LC or the guilt when i caved and ate the carb laden item. For instance, I am looking forward to a Mimi's cafe muffin on my next UD something I have not enjoyed in FOREVER on LC. No guilt...I will just count it....

4devochki 12-02-2013 01:10 AM

starting JUDDD, could use encouragement

Logged the highest-ever non-pregnant weight, a new record for me this morning: 200.6 lbs. Now weigh more than my 6'6" husband. Feeling so gross, old, and pathetic that I've done this to myself.

My downfall over the past year has been going VLC and then bingeing for weeks to make up for it, with a heavy dose of stress-drugging with awful food. I would like to start a new page of loving and caring for myself while coaxing the excess 70 lbs off with JUDDD/lowcarb. The calculator says I should eat 1955 on up days and 391 on down days. Of course nearly 2000 cals of "allowed" food looks crazy to me and I'm tempted to knock it back to 1,500, max.

Any advice or encouragement?

TIA,
Cassandra

Flossyliz 12-02-2013 02:43 AM

Welcome Cassandra.
You should find JUDDD much easier and more sustainable than your previous regimes.
If you've done VLC, the DDs should be easy for you.
The UD calories are an important reason JUDDD works. If you struggle with bulk on UDs, try adding butter, cream, coconut and/or olive oil.
Nuts, avocados, oily fish and peanut butter are healthy high-cal options too.
Read as much as you can on this forum, post often - and enjoy your UDs!
:welcome:

:welcome:! You should definitely eat your full UD numbers. If you added in exercise you can take that out, but you should eat the full amount at your current weight with the little to no exercise option.

The spread between the UD and DD is important. You also want to be well fueled for your upcoming DD.

:welcome: again!

h82bl8 12-02-2013 05:25 AM

Here I am, again. May I say that the past weeks have been a carb/calorie fest? This morning I am bloated, and tired. Why do I not ever learn? Carbs and over eating make me feel this way. So I am here committed to take this one day at a time. My brain feels like it's in a fog!! Today is an UD, not hungry this morning, the day will look like this:

7:00- Bullet-proof coffee

Whenever I get hungry - summer sausage with no nitrates and cheese

Hamburger partty with hatch chiles

Turkey, tomato and avocado lettuce wraps.

:welcome: Cassandra! You've come to a wonderful place to start caring for yourself. JUDDD is so very flexible and livable. Your calories sound about right to me, and like the others have said, it's important to eat very close to those UD calories to make the JUDDD magic happen. You'll soon get used to eating that much on your UDs. Just remember, your average daily calories with those numbers is not even 1200. You really don't want to go any lower than that!

Stick around and read and post as much as you can. There's so much advice and encouragement to be found here. It really will make all the difference in your successful journey.

:welcome: back! I know just how you feel. In fact, I am feeling that way myself today too. Carbs and overeating...yep. Let's make this a good UD, and tomorrow will be a very cleansing and health-giving DD.

4devochki 12-02-2013 10:05 AM

thank you!

Down day 1 is done--and it wasn't bad at all.

Looking forward to UD1 tomorrow, headed to bed now.

Has anyone experimented with compressing their eating window on either their UDs or DDs, in order to prolong the fasting effect? Maybe this is covered in the Alternate Day Diet book, which I haven't yet read--I'm holding out for the new edition to be released on 31 December.

Thanks so much for the nice welcome!

Goner 12-02-2013 10:41 AM

Welcome newbies!!

Yes, devochki - many here prolong their fast - skipping breakfast and lunch even - eating in a smaller window. YMMV - but sure, give it a shot and see how you do!

I've been JUDDDing for 7 months now and I never read the book - but have an order in for the new edition! There is so much info here - I hadn't felt the need.

Mom2jj 12-02-2013 05:17 PM

New here

Hi. I'm new here. I have enjoyed reading so much about JUDDD. I had my first DD today and it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Looking forward to tomorrow. I think this is something I can do.

:welcome:! I hope you love JUDDD as much as I do!

Yennie 12-02-2013 08:53 PM

Welcome to all the newbies! You've already had good feedback from our veterans so I just wanted to pop in, say hi and also say EAT YOUR UD CALS!!! The number seems huge but its so very important!
(Yep, I just yelled) ;)

LoCarbGal 12-02-2013 09:02 PM

:welcome: Lynne! I'm glad you got through your first DD so well. Tomorrow will be much more fun. Good luck, post often, read tons (more) and I look forward to getting to know you.

4devochki 12-03-2013 01:48 AM

OK, I can see I'm going to need to stock more full-fat lowcarb dairy for up days--as eating just 1/3 of my daily allotted cals so far has left me feeling like I'm going to burst. Will only make 1,200 today (with nuts, avocado and veggies roasted in oil!).

That said, it's really nice to feel "legal" and have such a full relaxed feeling, and such an appealing daily menu (whole eggs with roast eggplant and feta? Poached salmon with avocado-dill sauce, roasted sprouts and parsnips, plus almonds and apple--just a half--for dessert? Double yum). Not cheating! Hard to believe.

Is it crazy to be already planning the nice things I'll get to eat on my next up day (herb-crusted beef tenderloin, rocket salad with lots of nice Cypriot olive oil, lemon and pignoli, carrot soup with creme fraiche...)?

ladybarometer 12-03-2013 03:11 AM

Feel a bit better today - kept myself busy yesterday, so most of my worries didn't interfere too much after a while. I went home, relaxed a bit, had a little dinner, and wore comfortable clothes that fit so it would be off my mind.

I'll continue to drink water today, and try and relax - stress can cause weight gain too! Hopefully I can get back on track losing.
