I have lost numerous times on LC and always fall off the wagon and gain all my weight back. I thought this time - I would try JUDDD - but may have messed up already! Yesterday I kept my calories below 500 (398 to be exact) but today I was eating whatever I wanted. Had a pretty low calorie breakfast sandwich (about 280) but then had chinese (sauce and rice) for lunch - no idea of the calorie count. Am I supposed to cout calories on the up days?

Monica, it all depends on you and your metabolism. Many of us count on UDs because we can't be trusted to eat "normally." I know I can EASILY consume 3000 calories in a day without blinking. Others have to count because they habitually eat too little and that can stall weight loss too. I wouldn't worry about it for just one meal.

Depending on where you get your calorie information, you could find something similar and estimate your portion size. I do that a lot, as we often eat out and sometimes the nutritional information just isn't available.

I just replied to this and it seems to have disappeared… Odd.

Anyway, Dawn has said it beautifully. You'll do fine Monica,

I'm like Dawn, and I count every day. It's somehow comforting because I can track what works and what doesn't, and don't have to guess. You'll have to see what works for you. Good luck!

So far I haven’t counted anything at all. I just had diet fatigue from previous efforts — and my numbers were so low I woul never have started if I thought that was all I could eat! I counted one DD just to get an idea.

I aim to count everyday. I used to count everyday with LC and its something oddly comforting in knowing I'm doing what I can control. After a while you start to simply "know" what you can and cannot eat after tracking for so long. Plus the agony of not knowing if I "scrubbed" a day would be worse for me.

! One UD of not counting carefully won't mess anything up. I don't count on UDs, but did early on. I'm not a big overeater, but my UD calories are only 1550 so I can overdo that fairly easily if I'm not mindful of what I eat.

I also know the calorie counts of most of the things I eat regularly, but when we eat out, most places we go to don't have calorie counts since we don't eat at chains often.

I help this 'not knowing' by fasting on days when I will eat out and have a big meal at a restaurant.

I think it's important to enjoy your UDs since they make the DDs go by easily, but counting (at least early on) can be a good tool so you know what is working or what might need to be adjusted.

So I lasted another DD without any problems. My calories are still around 800, and my up day calories were around 1850. I am still maintaining a LCHF diet on UDs. The scale loved it though, down 2 lbs yesterday. It's the first loss that I have seen in over a month. Today's DD will be a challenge because it's the first one where I am working.

I second what Carly said. Work DD's are my favorite. I'm so focused on other things that I usually forget the eating part. If you're office is one that orders out frequently I would suggest keeping yourself a little more isolated for the first few days. That's a temptation no one should have to battle at the start of JUDDD. Just keep the fluids flowing in your body today and think positive thoughts.

I dug out an old (but hardly worn) bra this morning. An E cup, and it fits! I’d really like to get down to D, but E is definite progress!

Does anyone make their first meal "light" after a DD because they feel their tummy cant handle anything big for the first meal?

Congrats Ailuros! I have a whole bunch of clothes waiting in the wings, the moment I can fit them puppies its a go! Rock that E cup.

Smaller clothes is always wonderful, and shopping in your own closet is the best!

I was reading Dr. Mosley's 5:2 Diet forum and there is a pretty extensive thread about people claiming that they had lost quite a few inches and their clothes were fitting much better despite no losses on the scale. I was wondering if people here doing JUDDD had noticed anything similar? If so, it would be nice motivation to hang on during the inevitable stalls.

Yes, absolutely! I have to keep reminding myself to measure regularly. I think I have a mental block against it, because for so many years the numbers were just horrible and depressing. But I have definitely had times where there was no loss at all, but a pretty significant loss in inches. It does help keep you going!

As Carol said, absolutely! I have been keeping track of measurements since day 1 so its great motivation when the scale won't move. There are a whole bunch of NSVs, check out the thread!

And, as we say, "the pants don't lie, but the scale does!"

Shay, I seldom eat breakfast on my UD, but I am not much of an early morning eater at the best of times.

And the inches often go even when the scale is sticking Frosty. Love JUDDD.

That's good to know about the inches. Do you eventually get a decent sized whoosh? I'm wondering what mechanism is at work here.

Yep, the whoosh usually follows. But if you're trying to build muscle, often you wind up staying the same weight but losing inches. I'll take that exchange any day.

breaking into a new decade is REALLY tough. for some reason it just hangs on for dear life. it honestly took me a whole month to lose those 2 lbs for a decade break through.

you will break thru and it will probably be a pretty good one when it happens!!

It doesn't seem likely that people would build much muscle since they are eating less (including less protein) and it's usually tough to build muscle and lose fat at the same time. I suppose it's possible, though, since the body seems not to follow the usual rules with JUDDD.

Thanks. I was at 202 this morning after yesterday's DD. Oh well, getting through the holiday season at less than I started (211) would be a big deal, too.

Ok - you know you have been reading too many JUDDD forums when you read "she only had a few sips because she was dd-ing it" on a non-diet forum and you think "cool, someone else doing JUDDD".

Then, several minutes later, you realize they meant "designated driver".

True, except that JUDDD is supposed to have muscle protecting effects. And if you are concertedly making the effort to get in plenty of protein and doing muscle building exercising, it could happen. Wouldn't be huge amounts of course, but any little bit could help. It's what I've been trying to do lately, and I am seeing and feeling some firmer muscles, so here's hoping.

Yeah, exercise is something I want to get about doing. It's been so freakin' cold that I just want to go home from work and snuggle under a blanket in front of the computer or TV (especially on DDs).

I hear you there Frosty. I've been trying to reason with myself that exercising will help me warm up. Sometimes I'm dumb enough to believe it. Mostly I cuddle up under an afghan.
