My copy is supposed to arrive today. UPS comes around 7pm.

All this talk of Dulce de leche is killing me... that is the last thing I need after all this holiday indulging.

I REALLY want to try Dulce de Leche. Adi got me interested talking about Cajeta. I'm just not sure what to do with it, other than a topping for vanilla ice cream? Although the recipe LCG mentioned does sound scrumptious.

Oh lawks, that stuff is good: neat from the spoon; spread on bread; used to sandwich cookies or cake; as a 'smear-on' for many fruits or 'cat's tongue' biscuits; used as the caramel layer in millionaires' shortbread; as a filling for tiny shortbread or pastry cups - you get the idea.

If you like glazed/baked brie, then you'd probably like a cheeseboard that has an assortment of cheeses, and a bowl of this as a side dish along with what we in the UK refer to as fruit cheeses such as quince paste or a dense, set apple & fig butter, with some cut up apple and grapes.

Now that sounds wonderful, Slow!!! I can imagine baked brie with a side of this stuff very, very easily. Especially along with cut up grapes and apples. I like to bake brie with pastry around the outside (pillsbury crescent rolls work well), but I haven't done it in a longggg time. Looks like it might be time.

Tonight, at midnight, we are having our traditional New Year's Eve sundaes with all the trimmings. I even bought some rolled wafer cookies!

Until then, I am shuttling kids to various locations, and doing some of my newspaper weaving. Everyone I have shown it to, is impressed by the wicker-like effect achieved by newspapers.

Had my body wrap and massage this afternoon. Gloriously relaxing, and a perfect way to pamper myself as the year goes out.

Happy New Year to all! You've made this year great with your encouragement, support, and cheer.

Open jar and use a spoon. Nothing else needed.

SS

What recipies do you like from Rose Levy Beranbaum? I've not heard of her before but I'd love to try some and also tell my Mom about them (who is constantly baking cookies for church).

Although talking about cookies on New Years' Day seems a bit wrong somehow.

I have RLB's Rose's Christmas Cookies book but they're not distinctively seasonal and she provides helpful notes about which cookies stand up to being stored at ambient temperature, being packed up and sent through the post etc.. She includes an excellent chapter on Cookies to Make for and/or with Kids which is the best I've ever used.

People are absolutely loopy about her: Mrs. King's Irresistibles; Mexican Wedding Cakes; Three-Nut Fingers; Cinnamon Cloud-Nine Crunchies; Cashew Puffies; Lemon Poppyseeds; Mother Bauer's Buttered Rum Cookies; Jeanne Bauer's Maple Macadamia Bars; Savoury Cheese Dollars; David Shamah's Jumbles; Mini Cheesecakes. Seriously, I've been cooking and baking routinely since I was 5 yrs old, and I can't recall such unfailingly positive responses to baked goods on anything like this scale as when I've baked these recipes.

I make all of the above for bake sales on a regular basis and there has never once been an unsold package. It's not just the flavour, people are entranced by the intriguing textures of several of them (e.g., the Cinnamon Cloud-Nine Crunchies).

Her latest cake book, Rose's Heavenly Bakes is both an enjoyable read and a good recipe book (albeit a number of the recipes are multi-stage and can be intricate). She's a hugely detailed recipe researcher who conducts multiple experiments to develop absolutely the right recipe and she tests them to destruction. I admire her work enormously.

She's one of the few US cookery writers who routinely provides imperial and metric weight measurements as well as volume. She also provides copious notes on what to use in other countries if ingredients vary.

One other cookie by a US writer that has turned people's heads is Alice Medrich's
My Ginger Cookies
From her book Chewy Gooey Crispy Crunchy Melt-In-Your-Mouth Cookies but the recipe is also on her website, Alice Medrich.

Thanks so much SS! Sounds amazing. My Mom already ordered the book and I will as well.

hum... let's see how I feel about it tomorrow after a week and a half on vacation. The 3 people who work closest to me think it is hilarious when I have to get up from my desk and holler down the stairs with my request for quiet...
