Keira's school has a "no technology" policy during school hours. She can keep a phone in her backpack, but can't even take it out to use on recesses or anything. She attends an extended day program (like daycare, but through the school), and she's there 2 hours before school and 2 hours after school. She's allowed to use it then. Mostly, I wanted to be able to shoot her a text if I'm running late to pick her up, or that kind of thing. (ETA: In rereading this, it sounds like she's at school/daycare for a gazillion hours! She's in a gifted school and they have a short day. The extended day hours just covers my work day and travel time to and from the school. Sheesh, that sounded like I neglect my child!)

I used to be a substitute teacher. There's nothing more annoying than kids texting or playing games on their phones in class. I took away LOTS of phones! I can't believe parents would call their kids DURING school hours! I take that back. I believe it, but WOW!

That's a great idea. I had considered letting her get an Amazon card with the rest of her money, so she can buy books/games, etc. I think I like your idea better. She will need to physically hand over money if she wants something.

They had one mother come down to the school and come unglued because the school wouldn't let her daughter take her (mom's) calls during class. People are weird sometimes.

It is so 'normal' for children to have phones now, I find it really odd, but here it is. I am sure Kiera will use hers wisely, with your guidance.

As for the money, that is simply inappropriate for a child. You have behaved wisely but if the same thing happens at Christmas you may have to have a 'discussion' with the ex...

We will all simply do our best over the next couple of weeks, but read my siggie! I also love the post from Slow reminding us that a higher DD does not mean a failed DD, just slower losses perhaps. You have options.

My DD failed a couple of days ago after the cinema. We ate at a Lebanese restaurant. So I did a DD yesterday and today has been a fairly low UD, but not I think an MD.

Having my highlights done tomorrow afternoon. after gym in the morning and putting up the tree.

Nice day for a DD.

I totally get it Soren. You just keep on hanging in and you'll be ready for a stellar re-start in January. This time of year it's tough to keep on the rotations, and with just really starting back, I think it would be near impossible. Keep posting though! We need your sunny personality and fun!

Soren you will get back into it once the craziness is over!!!
Kissa you are so good, my hero in this woe. You have been doing this so long!! I love seeing you still here!!

I had a great DD yesterday. I was down half a pound from the day after my last DD. I cant bring myself to weigh after an UD yet. Maybe once the scale moves a little more.

It was totally scary breaking out the scale!! I don't weigh much anymore since I have been gaining like crazy!! But so far about 3 lbs down just this week!! That is awesome!!
Hopefully this will keep it a little longer so it will keep me motivated. My DD's are getting so much easier. I do love that!!

I just had a great workout with some bulletproof coffee. Looking forward to cereal this morning!!! YUMMY!!

And the saddest thing is that this is becoming more the norm than not. I used to enjoy teaching (although I have been a central office administrator for the past 9 years) I still deal with a specific population and those types of parents. make the job miserable. My DH decided to retire at mid-term due to the new issues teachers are encountering. Said he had had enough. And this is a more rural area.

I work in a youth development job and it isn't the kids who are the problem - most times it is the parents. I will be glad to retire, and not miss it at all. My countdown shows only 18 more work days.

I think it's a tough call in today's world as to what age needs a cell phone. My DD has decided her twins are too young at 12, but they are about the only ones in their class without one.

The strangest story I heard lately is a neighbor who bought an IPAD for her 3 year old, so he would leave hers alone. Sorry - for me, that's too young.

$200 sent to parents to get something for their 9 year old child, IMO, is one thing - sending the money to the child is a bit much. My MIL use to hand my children (who are now in their 40s) $50 when they were that age - and we're talking quite a few years ago - I use to get furious... so I can see your point Dawn. But then my MIL didn't do hands on with grandchildren, it always looked like something to "ease' her mind to me.

This is it, exactly. They haven't seen my daughter in 2 years. Up until this past spring, they only lived 45 minutes away, so it wasn't that they couldn't. I'm sure it's a way to assuage their guilt. The funny thing is, they have nothing to feel guilty about. I choose not to see them unless absolutely necessary, but they make no effort either. (I have never denied them access, though.) It's almost like they want to throw money at the issue to prove they care. Blah. I'd rather they talk to her on the phone, find out what she likes, and send her a $10.00 book or art supplies or something.

Try being a therapist for children/ teens. 98% of the time the kid was in therapy BECAUSE of the parent/ parents

When I interviewed at my present job in 2008 they were very interested and made me an offer. I said I would only take the job if I could restrict my caseload to 18yrs and up. They agreed. They have never since granted that wish to anyone else, but I just came out of 2 years at an adolescent rehab and I needed a break from constant CPS calls and psycho parents.

I only see a very few clients now that I'm an administrator, but parents still mess their kids up in their 30's and beyond

I know I'm terrified to become a mother, because of all the horror I have heard over the last 12 years of being a therapist.

On a happy note I'm officially on vacation
It is so needed. I'm exhausted to the point of tears on my drive home. That is so not normal for me (probably PMS, too).

I was telling a friend just the other day I was so thrilled when I found out mine was going to be a boy because I was super pumped to break the cycle of psycho from Grandma --> Mom --> Me. Some, but not all of it is weight/body image related. And my friend told me that even if mine had been a girl, I would not have allowed the cycle to continue because I was aware of it!!!!

The point is that, because you are aware, you won't be the thing you are so terrified of being. All moms make mistakes, sure, but your baby won't be in the same boat you find your clients in. Besides, you're way too empathetic to ever allow that to happen.

Enjoy your vacation!

Hi guys,
Thanks for the support! Day 2 of the cold, and im hitting it with everything: pills, nasal rinse, steroid spray (nasonex), cold 911 tea.
I got through mu last work day, including finishing a recording (training video) that thousands will listen to. No pressure
Anyway, mom and her dh made it in after 12hrs at like 35mph in ice storm weather (should be 8hrs at 60mph)... She was a bit overwhelmed when she got here, but some scotch and a shower worked well
I made dinner for all and bailed early, achoo.

Hair appt tomorrow and then rest.

Re:cash. Gotta respect the parents wishes. I got cash from one set of grandparents all the time, but spent time with the other set. Different relationships, ya know?

Carly . Crying on the way home is not good. I've been there! I'm glad you've got some time off. You certainly deserve it!

Soren, darn that cold anyway! I hope you can rest and kick it real quick. Enjoy mom and stepdad and the holiday.

We have a rule when the kids get money: save, share and spend. They make budgets for this, keeping in mind upcoming birthdays of their sisters and friends for which they will make presents. I agree that 200 is a lot for one holiday. Maybe it was birthday plus christmas?

Mine (10, 9 last week, 6 and 6) don't have phones either, because they are always with adults, but it is an uphill battle. Classmates who do have phones are sometimes already the recepients of mean or taunting text messages. The longer we can put that off, the better.

Happy Christmas preparations to everyone.

Hello. I am really hating the holidays. Every DD gets compromised with all the candy and cookie stuff around. I can't take it!! If it is Not around I am fine. But if I see it it is so hard. I was having a great dd yesterday but then finally tried some caramel popcorn given to us and one taste led to about 10 more. Ugh. I want to throw it all out.
So many of you having house guest over the holidays. I don't know how you do it.. I get so stressed trying to make everything perfect I end up stress eating. The only house guest we will have is my son and his dog home from college. He does not cause stress. Now the dog,,hmmm,

I bought some grass fed beef bones today and I'll be trying to make some bone broth in the next couple of days for the first time. Seems so simple, but I feel like I'm going to screw it up for some reason.

I'll be hosting my daughters camp reunion this year at my house. All the girls and councilors in her cabin get back together for a sleepover, secret Santa gift exchange, and to eat all the junk food they can get. There will be 10 girls all together and I'm cringing at the list of junk food/sodas that is being requested. I have no issues with having it in my house because I know I won't be temped, I just hate the idea that they are going to eat it and knowing what it does. None of them have weight issues, so at least I'm not contributing to any existing issues, and hopefully they never have one. It must be nice to be a teenager with a good metabolism!

So I'm off to the store to shop for junk food, get some decorations and lights to finish the house for Christmas, get some last minute gifts to finish my lists, do some cleaning and then get ready to be outnumbered 10-1.

Mike I have grass fed beef bones in the freezer too. Do you just boil yours with no salt or seasoning?

I've been trying to keep a reign on my eating. I had an ok DD yesterday and thank goodness today is an UD. We have our Winter Solstice feast tonight and I would like to eat with the family. Its hard to sit there and watch them eat and say "No, I'm fine. You guys go ahead and eat. I'm not hungry (*as my stomach growls)". lol

I actually have never made it before. So I'm going to follow the directions on Nom Nom Paleo. I have 10 pounds so I'll use 1/3 of the bones for this first batch. I do plan on roasting the bones for an hour in the oven first though. I've read this gives it more flavor.

I have made simple bone broth LTD of time, so good.
Only simmered the chicken bones, carrot, celery in water several hours like 3-4.
Anxious to hear how u like the broth!
If u can stand the boughten cube broth, u will love the homemade style!
Wish I had some bones to cook today.

For sure roast the bones. Brown = flavor!
Simmer a good long time. I think you can even add some plain gelatin when it's hot, that stuff is good for you! I add it to my chicken broth usually.... This last time, I cooked the whole thing so long, it gelled all on its own (the chicken was totally falling apart).

We have guests + ice storm. Good thing I have lots of food (and mom brought beef ribs, and a side of salmon), and netflix. I got out today with just plain rain coming down, got my hair coloured/trimmed, and gifts dropped for my chef friend, and a zillion magazines bought for Xmas day.

After dinner tonight, I made mint double chocolate chip cookies. A bit of an experiment not bad. I have like, 10000 of them, for bringing somewhere, or others dropping by. I'd like to have a ricotta sausage pie standing by also.

Still sick. Slept better last night. Had a burst of energy (see above cookiepalooza), and am crashing now. Guess my meds wore off too. Sigh. Advil cold and sinus here I come.

I'll try to wrap some stuff tomorrow- I got a smoker for dh, and it showed up while I was on my last trip, so it's no longer a surprise, but he says he didn't look at it closely in order to still be sort of surprised he doesn't know the other boxes are wood chips and a cover for it though .

Ok, going to get that rest now.
Hugs!
S.

Ice storm update: power went out and flicked, then out again, and then came back maybe 30 min later. Stayed on thus far, some minor flickering of my bedside lamp. The ice hitting the windows sounds brutal. And of course, I had black tea today (venti chai latte as a breakfast treat) and now it's 2 am and I'm still awake!

How's everyone else weathering this storm?

Stay safe Soren, I hope the power stays on. Sorry you have a cold over Xmas, not nice at all.

Well I feel fairly ahead of the game, but still spend an hour or so every night worrying about stuff, so silly.

Off to buy veggies etc today then collecting special orders tomorrow and Tuesday. My lovely DD with Downs arrives tomorrow, with her DH. They are travelling by train so I am hoping that all goes smoothly.
