Full Fast DDs the rest of November/beyond

So I have been tweaking and tweaking for the last couple weeks. I have gotten off track a couple times with my tweaks, but have kept on experimenting.

I know that Dr. Johnson tells most people to eat some calories on their DDs cause it helps them get through. But I think I am gonna go cold turkey and fully fast on the DDs.

Reading this paper http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/81/1/69.full.pdf has given me more insight into the ADF/IF and how it should be helpful for me. I feel like calories on the DDs lead to excess intake on those DDs for me. Like a downward spiral of intake after the first bite on the DD. But when I do full day fasts, I can go the entire day not thinking of food or being hungry.

So, the only question I have is the UD/non-fasting day calorie count. Should I stay at the 2700 calculated, or should I move up to around 3000? This would be approx. 1500 a day then averaged out.

I plan on drinking water and black coffee on the fasting days, sometimes tea as well. I will let you all know how it works.

I am going to continue my exercise regiment, running 15-25 miles a week and adding in pushups/ab workout to tone and maintain muscle. I don't know if this plan is sustainable for the long term, as I am going to do a half-marathon in May, so the calories may need to increase. I am hoping by the time training for that starts I will be nearer my goal weight so that calories can be closer to maintainance.

Wish me luck!

I do wish you luck Alex! You are brave to try this. I know what you mean, though, about feeling like you want to eat more once you've eaten anything. I feel exactly the same. I've never tried a complete fast, and I'm not even sure I want to. But if you can do it, more power to you!

I've done full 36 hour IF in the past, usually twice a week. And loved it. So I think this should work. From what I've read, I think I should be able to do it for at least a month, if not more, and then go from there.

A lot of people have noticed the "I'm not hungry until I eat" thing. A few people here do really well with not eating most DDs, and I think if it works for you, Great! It will be interesting to see how you do with a total fast every other day. I have done a total fast for a day a few times, but I personally probably could not sustain it for every down day....but others do, or nearly. Either way is ok. keep us posted? I think you will have to see how you feel to know whether to increase up day calories or not.

I think you could go either way with the UD calories. You shouldn't need to added them, but if you want to you could probably get away with adding them to your UD. I gues it depends how fast you want to lose.

Good luck, Alex. That sounds like a workable plan, and that you've given it a lot of thought. I would think it would be difficult to run on fast days, but I have no idea. As for adding calories, it might be helpful to get you through DDs.

As you increase your long run's just make sure you fuel before them. Recovery time after (at least for me) went better if I had fuel in my body prior. My longest run ever was 15 miles.

Thanks so much Alex for posting the link to that research "Alternate-day fasting in nonobese subjects: effects on body weight, body composition, and energy metabolism".

I've been wondering if there had been any studies on us "nonobese subjects" and ADF. That's why my mascot avi is a guinea pig.

Best wishes on your continued progress! ~ Ann

Interesting paper, I might give this a try from 12/1 to 12/22. A bunch of information I found previously indicated that experiments had subjects (mice) eat twice their normal caloric needs on feast days, and nothing on fast days to maintain weight and get the benefits of fasting. This paper indicates they informed the subject that they would need to eat twice their normal intake to maintain weight, but it didn't track the actual amount consumed. It just indicated that the men felt like they were big eaters and the women tended to watch what they ate.

The best thing I see about the results is the higher drop in fat mass than fat free mass over the time period.

Well, I love this because my goal is to stay as low as possible on DDs, forever, really. I suppose I could totally fast, but I love my coffee too much. (I have skim milk, or even a SF/FF lattes if needed on a DD) I hope there continues to be more research, especially now with IF becoming more popular. TFS and good luck, Alex! Let us know how you do!!

Day 1 almost down. Had a cup of black coffee in the morning, a mid-day cup of tea, and a cup of coffee when I got home from school. For some reason, it is easier for me to do fully fasting DDs than other DDs.

Mike: I was very interested too in the fact that the subjects were told to double normal intake but the actual intake was not recorded. But that when normalized the big eaters lost slower than the calorie counters. All I know is there is no way I am taking in 4400+ calories on the UDs. I am going to try to start at 2700 calories, and move up from there if I feel necessary.

I am going to continue to run 15-25 miles a week until January 12th, when I will begin my marathon training program. Close to signing up, just need that little bit of motivation to take the plunge!

Will you be doing a 24 fast/24 feast period like the paper indicated? Midnight to Midnight. Or something different?

I've been thinking about trying this also. I feel like I'm doing good finding such filling low-cal foods on DDs that I'm stuffed, even around 300 cals and I wonder if that isn't defeating the true idea of ADF/IF. Maybe I'll try it for 2 weeks after Thanksgiving and see how I feel. Keep us posted on your progress!!!

Mike: I'm guessing my fasts will be between 24 and 36 hours, depending on my last meal/breaking the fast. It probably will all depend on class schedule, training schedule, etc. I don't anticipate any falling below 24 hours. I am feeling really good after yesterday's fast, and ready for tomorrow's.

WOE: JUDDD - EOD/STILLMANS :)

I did JUDDD like this for 8 weeks EOD completely fasting for 36 hours, I found it was very doable. I stuck to water and black coffee and ate whatever I wanted on my UD - haven't got a clue on calories but I was eating a lot. I felt great and rarely felt hungry.
I am starting JUDDD again - first DD today and plan on completely fasting every other day.

Good luck

I have been doing this sort of inadvertantly. I meant to do the first two, but then it got to where I was too busy with a project I was working on, and didn't want to sit down and plan out what I could eat (I'm having some other food restrictions that I have to plan for/deal with). I never would have thought I would be the kind of person to say 'it is just easier to not eat'!

How are you doing on your plan, Alex? And others?

I'm a n00b to JUDDD, though I've done other kinds of IF in the past (unsuccessfully). I decided to do full fast DDs because, frankly, it's easier for me to not eat at all that it is to eat just a little.

I started last week and just had my third DD yesterday. I really like this and don't find it hard at all. I've also lost 7.2 pounds since I started and have much more energy than I did before.

I did have a problem this morning, though. When I got up and was in the shower, I started feeling really weird. I can't really explain it but I felt almost disconnected from my body or something. When I was finished, I checked my fasting blood sugar and it was 62! I am not diabetic but it had been creeping up in the mornings over the last year or so (the morning is the only time it's on the high side, 95-110. Otherwise, it hangs around 85-90). I made a protein shake and ate a handful of Chex and felt right as rain.

I think it may have been a combination of a couple of different things. One, I am not very hungry on my UDs and I don't think I ate enough on Tuesday. Also, this is only my first week and I might still be adapting. If it keeps doing that, though, I may have to go to eating a 500 calorie dinner on my DDs.

Frosty!! Congrats on the 7.5 lb loss!!! Sounds like you're off to a great start.

The incident this morning sounds a little worrisome, and I can say from experience that it sounds like it could be a combination of things--including dehydration. I have had it happen to me in a hot shower, after being (unknowingly) dehydrated. It also, as you seem to think, could be low blood sugar---and not enough calories on your UDs. Consider eating up to your UD calories, especially since you fast completely on DDs. Drink enough liquids (non-alcoholic ) too on UDs and DDs, and hopefully that will help. If you drink alcohol, it can also be very dehydrating if you don't get enough other fluids.

Yeppers little frost beav..that was low blood sugar. It's a horrible feeling!
You become dis-oriented, confused, sweating and weak. If it goes on too long,
you will probably need help. If I get it,then it's 24 hours before I feel well again.
I am diabetic, but it all started years ago with low blood sugar episodes.
Would love to join a 'fast' but impossible for me. My best is to hold back the food bucket
as long as possible when I start my day. Less hunger that way. I agree with the others
about that issue.

Frosty~. I, too, felt that way a couple of times when I first started. I didn't take my blood sugar (I've never had issues, so no tester thingy) but after the first week I didn't have it anymore. I'm learning that with this plan, there are definitely things our bodies need to adjust to. In the meantime, make sure you have something on hand in those moments so that you're safe. WELCOME!

FrostyBeav! As you can see, it's not an uncommon feeling, especially in the beginning. I've had my share of lightheaded spells when I get up too fast on DDs. They still happen sometimes, but certainly not as often as they did in the beginning

Thanks all. I'm hoping it was just an adaptation thing as I like doing this. There may be something to the dehydration thing as I was super thirsty last night. I was hungrier today so definitely ate up to my UD calories. We'll see how things go tomorrow/Sat morning.

After drinking the shake this morning and eating a handful of cereal, I felt fine by the time I got to work and was good all day. I'm thinking it was a startup blip.

My 4th day on Juddd again!
It's seems so much easier this time for me, weird.
My first dd accidentally was 100 cal.
Yesterday, 200 cal. Wonderful for me
Hoping to keep dd low.
Last time around 600-700 dd, which worked for me, I lost!
I'm working the rest of my life with ten pounds, lose it, find it.
And here I m again.
Good luck

Make sure to keep a good handle on your electrolytes as well. That's usually the biggest culprit for me getting dizzy and not feeling well -- not enough sodium!

Thanks.

When I did VLCarb, I had to really add the salt to my food or I would get horrendous leg cramps. Since I am basically doing zero carb EOD, I am trying to make sure I get enough salt on my UD. I don't eat a lot of processed foods so have to add it.

-----

Is it weird to start looking forward to your DDs? I really like the "no fuss" aspect of a full fast DD. No worries about what to eat or when. When the hunger comes, it passes on pretty quickly so it isn't a bother. It's all so very simple.

If I'm dizzy it's a good bet I need more salt.
