I can't believe it's been a whole year. I know this is the JUDDD board, but you all are my friends and I prefer to share his success here, rather than anywhere else on LCF.

He weighed in this morning with 192 pounds lost from the date of his surgery, though he lost quite a bit in the weeks leading up to his surgery, so he's more than 200 pounds down. I couldn't be happier for him. He's done so amazingly well. It has not been an "easy" way out, as some may think. He's really had to make some lifestyle changes. He watches what he eats and exercises (some, but we're both working on that!).

He calculated his BMI yesterday and it has him at 30 which is still technically obese. I personally don't see it. I think he looks great, and his energy is wonderful. He's 6'3" and I'm sure a bunch of the weight contributing to the higher BMI is from loose skin. He can still stand to lose some, but it'll happen when it happens, or it won't, and either way is just fine.

 He is my rock, my love, my everything. BTW, the pictures were taken first thing this morning before Keira had a chance to even brush her hair, so ignore the ragamuffin' do!

What an amazing transformation! Way to go!!!!!!!!

LGG 11-07-2013 11:09 AM

Dawn - Your husband looks amazing - certainly not obese! As you know, BMI as a measurement of obesity has some limitations: athletes who are very muscular can have BMIs in the obese range, as can very tall people - like your husband. My husband is also very tall (6'7"+). He's thin, but has a BMI in the "overweight" range. Uh - no.

Anyway - congratulations to him! What an accomplishment!

LoCarbGal 11-07-2013 11:24 AM

Oh wow! Dawn, he looks just fantastic, and I'm so glad this has worked for him. He does NOT look obese. And hearing you "talk" about him is so wonderful!

The hands are even worse, but I'm trying not to think about them too much. :annoyed:

Thank you all for the comments. I'm so proud of him!

Dawn, congrats to your husband for doing great with his WLS and to you for supporting him through that journey! I had WLS in January 2005 and as you said it is not an "easy way out" as many mistakenly assume. What type of surgery did he have - RNY, sleeve, lap-band? I had RNY so if that is what he had my advice is to stay diligent with the supplement regimen. I am very compliant with that part but still have had problems with iron aborption and anemia for the past few years - had to have a round of 8 iron infusions this past winter.

I wish him continued success and health!

Mary Ellen

He had RNY and doesn't like me to "nag" him about his supplements. :hyst: He would never tell me that, but I know it's true, so I leave him alone. I think he's pretty good about taking them, and he never seems to have issues that would be related, at least not that I can tell. All things considered, he really has had it pretty good. He sometimes has issues with a food and then can't eat it for a while, but then tries it a month or so later and does fine. He can't drink quickly, which he sometimes forgets in the heat of summer, and that hurts him. And he doesn't do well with too much sugar. That's pretty much it. He's been really lucky.

I'm sorry about your anemia and absorption issues. I understand that's REALLY common with RNY, and I was worried about it for him. So far, so good (knock on wood)!

What an amazing transformation Dawn. I know you must be so very proud of him, and rightly so.

He, and you, both look so wonderful. Kiera is lucky to have you both, such wonderful parents.

Flutter 11-07-2013 02:49 PM

Oh Dawn, I am so teary looking at those photos. Your DH just looks like such a sweet man and seeing Keira inside those "before" pants...just precious & is so telling. I'm just delighted for your family! Such success you have BOTH had & how wonderful you are doing it together. LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!

SlimNana 11-07-2013 03:00 PM

 Holy incredible shrinking man you have there!

Kiera now has two totally different looking parents to be proud of. You've both changed so much in such a short time, that I bet she sometimes has a hard time recognizing the two of you in a crowd. :hyst:

P.S. Hope those painful looking hands of yours heal soon!

Best wishes to you both for good health and well being in maintenance forevermore.
~ Ann

How wonderful for you and your family!

Best looking dad and daughter I have EVER seen!! Maybe you can enter it in some contest?!?

:heart::jumpjoy::shake::sing::heart:

Carly 11-07-2013 05:38 PM

I'm almost speechless and that doesn't happen often.
First off... It's been a year?!? Where did the year go? I feel like that was just a few months ago when I was checking in here to see how the surgery went.

He looks fantastic. You 2 are a handsome couple and that picture of Keira in the before pants is awesome!

He does not look obese to me and I really think the loose skin weighs more than we think it does.

I'm so happy for all of you. :hugs::hugs::hugs:

:jumpjoy::jumpjoy::jumpjoy: Congratulations to your DH, Dawn!! I don't know how I didn't see this thread before now! He looks amazing, and the transformation is just incredible. Love, love, love the picture of him with Kiera standing in his old jeans. What an amazing success story.

Rebecca1979 11-07-2013 07:56 PM

He looks SOOOOO fantastic! Your muchkin doesn't look like a raffamuffin at all! =) I am soo proud for him!

heidihoopi 11-07-2013 08:13 PM

Wow, Congrats to you both!! Will he be needing skin removal surgery at some point or is he young enough that it's bounced back pretty well?

KeirasMom 11-08-2013 06:58 AM

You all melt my heart!

Heidi, he's 42, but has been overweight his whole life, so he will definitely need the skin removed at some point. He has his 1 year follow up with his bariatric surgeon next week and I suspect they'll at least touch on that at that appointment.

Lori_:) 11-08-2013 07:25 AM

Congratulations and continued good health to your DH & all of you! What a transforming year your family has had! :shake:

sorenkkg 11-08-2013 01:03 PM

WOW WOW WOW!!!

Amazing!

D, he looks soooo good! Like a relative of himself!

And, more importantly, he'll be around a lot longer for that gorgeous girl of yours, for you, and your sweet pups :)

I have another friend (b/c I'm counting you guys in that list :) ) who had the surgery this year, to alleviate his Type II diabetes, which he was NOT taking care of very well (and his brother is a bariatric surgeon).

So I know, first hand (well, second, but you know what I mean), the hard work that goes into making this choice, and making it work. B/c, you can fail at this if you try hard enough

Good for you guys as a family, and as parents, for taking the hard road and getting your health on track. What a great example for your little monkey!
I hope she never faces these issues, and just grows up with a healthy love and respect for food, exercise, activity, and her body.

:hugs:
