vanity sizing. not a myth.

I had my first baby at 34 years old. At my 12 week weigh in, I was 117 lbs. Needless to say at 42 and another baby later, I have never returned to that weight. I have a big box full of skinny Minny clothes with "don't even try to open this box until 120lbs" written in black marker on the top. Well, I went to old navy and low and behold, I bought a pair of size 4's!! Color me joyful, right??? I run home and rip into that forbidden box knowing some of my fab jeans are 4's. Welcome back old friends!!! Right??? Uh, yeah, no. I could barely get my thighs in them, let alone pull them up over my hips!!!!!

I should have listened to the warning on the box :( cause sizes sure aren't what they used to be.

Ugh! I just hate that! Plus the fact that each of our pounds years ago was more muscle than now, it makes it even harder to get back into those old clothes. Darnit! :annoyed:

I so totally agree!! I never ever owned a pair of 4's now all of a suddedn, 4's fit perfectly, seriously I think its stupid!

I'm perfectly comfortable in my size 6L Levi's, but I have some size 12 Bebe Couture jeans which are only slightly loose. (I still claim size 6, though!) :hyst:

Lol! I'll claim the vanity size too :-)

To hell with the secret skinny minny box. :D

eh, the old clothes generally aren't that great when you finally fit into them. I always wondered why I had saved them so long!

but I always think of this when people natter on about how Marilyn Monroe was a size 14. not TODAY's size 14! you wouldn't find her shopping at Avenue!

Yep, lots of vanity sizing, otherwise my jeans would be a 10 and not a 3/4/5/6. <snort> I don't care, though. It's all about being happy in your skin and knowing you're much healthier and can MOVE & BREATHE better. You look great, mafia, who cares about those old "vintage" things anyways! You're better now! ;)

I wore size 10 jeans when I was 137-140, at age 34, and I bet those same jeans would be a 6 now. :D It is an obesity epidemic, I believe. If they keep on with the vanity sizing because of the increasing weight of Americans, people who are actually a size 4 or 2, will need negative sizes.

At 145, I was wearing size 12s, and I'm wearing 12's now at 172!

I'll beg to differ. I saved all my old clothes (purchased between 2002-2006). They were/ are expensive designer clothes and I'm so grateful I saved them. Those are the 4Ps that I wear. I have bought some things here or there recently and many of them are XSP- Get real- I'm thin, but not an XSP.

To compensate for the fact that sizes have expanded is the 00P. That is not a real size!!! But truly tiny people instead of buying a 2P now wear a 00P. :stars:

So true! I sell clothing (mostly contemporary, but some vintage) online and the difference in sizing is huge. A 1950's sz 14 is probably closer to a 6 in today's sizes.

I have 2 pairs of size 4s that fit just fine. Some other brands I can barely get into a 6. I don't know if it's purposely vanity sizing or the brands have different standards. I do LOVE fitting into a 4 though!!!

I have a box of jeans going back to the early 1990's. Ive been going thru it as I lose weight and over all the clothing I fit in that box is labelled 4 sizes different to the jeans I but from the shop. Right now Im wearing current size 8's, but finding old size 12's a little bit pressing ;)
