so i experimented yesterday

Yesterday was an UD for me. Out of curiosity, I counted no calories and ate like I did before LC or JUDDD. Whatever I wanted, as much as I wanted. I weighed my self this morning and was 133.4. No surprise there. Can't eat like that and not gain. I put in the calorie count for yesterday into my calculator...... Had eaten whopping 3,193 calories!!!! Holy cow!! No wonder I was fat!

Best thing anyone can do on any weight loss plan is to count. It's truly an education, eye opening, holy shite experience!!

Oh and you know what??? I felt like crap last night.

Colleen, I have the feeling I would be exactly the same. I know I ate too much volume many days when I wasn't paying attention. I like big portions. Good for you for doing the experiment and learning that about yourself. Maybe later on, further into the journey, you'll find you don't have that inclination anymore.

All I know is, if I didn't count UDs as well as DDs, I wouldn't have lost as well as I have.

Whenever I allow myself a "free day" and then track it anyway, I'm right around 3000 calories. This is after 2 years of JUDDD (nearly), so for me, it never went away. Thankfully, I can get away with that sometimes, but if I allowed it every day, I'd be right back where I started.

I totally agree. That's the danger of "eat until you are satisfied" concept from the book. Our internal thermostats for food satiety are skewed (or we wouldn't be fat).

Even if you are "normal", the newest research shows what a lot of us know already-- processed foods now are CREATED to be ADDICTIVE. You literally can't stop eating chips or cookies or whatever, b/c they are frankensteined to be that way.

top that with those of us whose brains react to food hitting the same pleasure centers as drugs (maybe it's for everyone, but worse for some)... you get a perfect storm of not being able to control some eating.

sigh.

I've been at this weight-control/loss business for a long time, and the one sane thing I've picked up from EVERY plan (nutritionist, weight watchers, atkins, JUDDD, anything you name)... is that you MUST track your food.

My experience with a nutritionist (or 2... ) is that even before you start "dieting", they ask you to track your intake for a week.

And studies show that just the act of tracking, usually reduces your intake, b/c you don't want to write *certain* things down. So you don't eat them.

I think its the best tool in our arsenal, and now with smartphones, it's sooooooo easy. No excuse not to do it.

I "naturally" end up to around 3000 calories as well when I go by hunger. I was pretty shocked at how much all those little healthy snacks added up for me!

Yep. I lost so much, so many times on low carb when i was younger, but these days, i have to count the damned calories. AND the carbs, it seems. One only has to look around, though, at the number of people who are incredibly successful in all other aspects of life, but are still overweight. SAD.

3000 cals, huh? <snort> I am so not surprised!!!! It's crazy how many calories are in stuff. I must, must, MUST count UD & DD to lose...heck, maintaining is the same way! If I don't know, I will keep eating...that's a very bad thing!

Not to belabor this, but SERIOUSLY OMG, there are sooo many calories in things that LC encourages you to eat at liberty.

I *know* that Atkins talks about calories (eventually) and the metabolic-advantage isn't a miracle, it's like maybe 200 calories leeway.

But I never tracked calories, I just did my carbs, and only limited the things they said to (like cream and cheese)

So I'm looking at my salami, and it says 2 slices are 110 calories
and a slice of cheese is about 80-100 also

I remember lunches of like 5 slices of cheese and double that of salami.

That's why I am not sure how LC and JUDDD can be done? Low carb is so very caloric!

This last round of low cal/ low carb I fasted all morning.
Late afternoon I had a few ounces of celery with a T of dressing for dip.
For dinner I had 3 ounces of fish or chicken grilled with a few ounces of lettuce.

My treat was half and half in my coffee.

I did this every day for 1 month before finding juddd- thank G-d!

Which is why I have trouble understanding so many LC people who start JUDDD and say they can't manage to eat enough calories. I certainly never had a problem, even strictly LC. The opposite problem, in fact.

It could be that in ketosis, many people find appetite suppression as an effect, and thus eat less.

3000 cal is what my husband, at/around 300lbs and 6'3", should eat on an up day (zeros what I recall of his numbers).

For us, ya, that's a lot. Not that I'm not up for the challenge
But not if I want to wear non-ironic skinny jeans.

Yes, I remember those lunches too, and wistfully sometimes. I just can't "spend" the calories anymore, and the tiny amounts just don't do it for me. But those were some goooood lunches!

I have never understood this either as I used lots of butter and cheese and coconut oil to cook everything in when I did Atkins and the calories were high as I found out when I started tracking them. I guess if you ate small amounts of meat and LOTS of LC veggies. Maybe?

Not for me! Luckily.

I am one of those who has good success with not counting at all on my Up Days. I know it doesn't work for everyone, but I am grateful it is working for me.

I know most of you know that I've been one of the lucky few that doesn't need to count UDs either.

I did in the beginning, but stopped about a month in. That being said I know what the calories are in almost everything that I eat so I have an idea of where I'm at.

I counted yesterday up until dinner and I had about a thousand left, which I know I probably did not go over, but I'm up 3 lbs. Trouble is, I had about 3000 last UD. I usually "find" the extra calories 2 days later.

Totally agree. There is quite a delay I find. Takes a while for the body to keep up. it takes awhile for the DD too sometimes! I'll be all like, oh yeah, I ate this and this and dropped two pounds! Nope. Just the DD delay.
