Hey Hula Hoopers, I am new here as of last night, Doing my first UD today and working on deciding what I want to do for exercise. And I am intrigued by hula hooping, about a year or so ago we were at a ice cream parlor and they had a heavier hula hoop than the ones my kids had and I was actually able to hoop for long periods and I loved it.

So where is the best place to get a heavier hula hoop do you guys do anything special? Or just hoop for an hour, I would love to how you are incorporating this into your exercise plan.

Hi Slim! Welcome to the board and congrats on making JUDDD a part of your weight loss plan. I ordered my hula hoop online but that's only because I couldn't find it at Walmart which is where some of our other hoopers got theirs.

The key is to use the heavier weighed hoop and not the little plastic ones sold for kid use. As for how its incorporated....I use mine daily for half an hour while I watch TV. That's it. There's no "right" amount of time to do it. Half an hour a day just seems to work for me so I stick to that. Doing more is fine if you have the time and enjoy it!

Hi Angela! I'm so glad you've joined us. I love my hula hoop so much, at this point it is more for fun than for fitness. However, I have lost several inches off my waist and upper hips since starting it. I have a Danskin Now 2.5 pound weighted one I ordered from Walmart. That one is out of stock, but they have a Gold's Gym one that looks very comparable and is only $19.97.

I looked up how many calories can be burned hula hooping, and while I know this isn't very reliable, it seems that it could be anywhere from 300 to 600 per hour. So I keep the 600 number in mind while I'm doing it, and try to really do it with gusto and as fast as I can to keep the burn up. I do sweat and get tired. I just do it in front of the TV too and go as long as I feel like. Hope you can get one and enjoy it as much as I do!

Do the heavier hula hoops make hula hooping possible? I try but can NOT hula with the lightweight ones (which I bought to weave recycled t-shirts into round rugs... )

Any help? I tried finding pointers online - with no luck.

I find it easier with the weighted hula hoop, for sure. And it must make it a better workout too, because you have to work harder to keep it spinning. I tried a normal, toy hula hoop and couldn't for the life of me keep it going.

Thanks LCG - I'll have to ask Santa for a weighted hula hoop. I have the WII fit and there is a hula hoop game which I find to be quite the work out - and no danger of dropping it - well you can drop it if you slow down too much, but I don't let that happen.

Work stress plus weight lifting is not a great combination! As soon as I start lifting heavy I am getting a major pressure headache in the back of my head and neck. Weirdest thing. It started last Wednesday with some work stuff that really got to me made me want to just quit and every lifting session since then I get the same thing. I thought 2 days off might get rid of it but no deal, same thing last night. Trying to relax and de-stress, but I can't seem to get rid of the tension in my head and neck. I was hoping it would fuel my workout and make it better, but it has done the opposite.

On the plus side my boss gave me a spot bonus for all my hard work, so maybe once that hits my bank account my stress will go away!
