Library Girl/Cindy - you have inspired me to cut the sugar

In another thread, Cindy wrote:

I also want to eliminate snacky processed foods, which are so convenient, but again work much like sugar in that I can't limit my intake. Wish me luck, this is just the beginning of thinking seriously about it for me.
After thinking about this, I have decided to join you Cindy. I am going to avoid sugary and carby treats until Halloween. I've been allowing myself some candy treats on UDs in the late evening and am now wondering if they are inhibiting me from losing well right now - in fact I'm up a couple of pounds.

I'm going to concentrate on seasonal produce including squashes and apples for my carbs, but try not to have any sweets to get them out of my system.

I have already promised myself I can have candy on Halloween, so that will be my incentive to get through these 10 days clean. Then hopefully I can limit the sugar again after Halloween until closer to Thanksgiving.

Thanks Cindy, for getting me thinking about this! I hope you won't mind having a buddy along for this ride!

Remember that all processed carbs (grains etc.) are converted to sugar as well and have the same effect on your insulin. I would suggest going grain free (gluten free!) at the same time. I think you will get the most out of your sugar "detox" if you do this.

And when hungry turn to high fat foods to fill that void and keep you satisfied.

I've been low carb high fat for the last 7 weeks and it has been very satisfying and I'm not missing any of the sugar/carbs.

Just seeing this thread!! I'm so glad I've inspired you, LCG (Carol)! I think I will go grain free as well, because I don't eat many grains anyway, except in sugary stuff. I was just coming onto the main forum to post how excited I am to go back to LC, and saw this. Now we can monitor each other's progress, LCG! What do you say?

What will you substitute for Rose's lime juice? I will allow coconut sugar and flour, and I have some palm sugar as well. I also will allow raw honey, and all fruits and vegetables including legumes, limiting white potatoes. Woohoo, this should be great!

I'm making lemon fat bombs tonight, and I bought cubed monteray jack cheese and pepperoni at the grocery store! Yay!

Total sugar addict here!!! Red meat helps with sugar cravings, infact, a lack of it causes the cravings in the first place!

Mike, I'm pretty low on the wheat intake already, so I'll probably not change much there. If I eat a little I'm not going to stress about it. You're so right about it though. I'm becoming more and more convinced all the time that wheat is NOT good for us.

Cindy, I'm excited we'll be doing this together! I have the feeling both of us may be surprised at how our losses pick up doing this. I hope so anyway!

I'm embarrassed to say that I will probably not replace my Rose's with anything else. That's going to be my one splurge, and it's a pretty small one at that. So not 100% sugar free, but pretty darn close!

So excited to do this!!!

I can see that this could be a great way to get the losses moving again. It reminds me of Beeb's (I think it was hers) 'Shake it up' thread.

I believe our bodies respond well to changes in diet.

And there is no doubt that High Fat, Low Carb has many benefits.

Thanks, Cindy. I have always believed LC/Paleo/GF was healthier, but it didn't stop me from secretly rejoicing that I could fast eod and eat all that unhealthy food as much as I wanted...I'd say over the past 4-5 months, I've been seeing a trend toward very indulgent unhealthy UDs, and I couldn't seem to break the pattern. I was lucky if I had one real meal a day. I tried to incorporate lots of veggies on DDs, but there's only so much you can do with 300-500 calories.

I still want to indulge on special occasions, but every other day is not a special occasion and that's what I was trying to make it.

I think you will find that it is not that hard. I have been lowcarb for 8 years. I gave up wheat and only eat it a few times a year. I wish I never ate it as it takes months to get back out of your system. I have IBS and this has helped a lot. I make sf chocolate bark for when I must have some chocolate. Or a piece of good dark chocolate. I make sf muffins to eat on my up days. They st have lots of calories from the almond flour. Good luck.

I just listened to a podcast this morning that said it takes up to 6 months for an exposure to gluten to disappear completely from your body. So cheating "occasionally" restarts that 6 months to fully benefit from getting it out of your system.

Welcome to this challenge! It's exciting to have more joining us. I have never found that caffeine hampers my weightloss, so I don't even think about giving it up. I also don't find that it keeps me from sleeping well, even when I have it in the evening. I don't ever drink coffee in the evening, just tea or the occasional diet soda.

Yep, Rose's lime juice is what I use in my beloved Vodka Gimlets, which do make an appearance on a good many of my UDs! Like caffeine, it's not going anywhere!

I have to say, I feel so great about doing this. I'll be able to get more protein in with the extra calories I won't be using on dessert treats, and I've been trying hard to do that lately so I hopefully won't lose LBM. I feel so relaxed about eating all of a sudden. Nice.

How did your day go today, Carol? I know it was a DD for you, and a UD for me. Yay me! Mine has gone well, and I still haven't had dinner. I did find myself craving sugar at various points during the afternoon, but I didn't succumb. What are you doing differently, if anything, on your DD? I'm thinking of having a full 500 calorie DD tomorrow, with boiled eggs, fat bombs and then a chicken breast for dinner w/veggies.

Ya, I used to do Vodka Gimlets many years ago in my other life (earlier marriage). Haven't had anything alcoholic for 26+ years now!

My DD went pretty well, I'd say. I'm not really doing anything differently on DDs, except for maybe allowing myself a few extra calories since they're in the form of protein and fat. Although I topped out at 375 today, so not higher at all today! I've been keeping DDs pretty LC since that satisfies me better.

Tomorrow will be a good test. We'll see if I start wanting a treat after dinner. Hopefully not, since I felt like I had tamed that beast/bad habit some time ago. If I finish up the day at dinnertime well nourished, hopefully I won't feel that need.

I'm glad your UD went well and you were able to fend off the cravings. I think your DD plan for tomorrow is great! We're doing it GF!

I also had wine. I woke up first thing this morning with sugar cravings. It went away quickly, but it was kind of strange. I might go through a worse detox than I did when I was doing LC. I wasn't indulging in sweets that much before I started LC or JUDDD...my thinking changed and I felt like it was the best kind of reward on UDs.

I'm glad your day went well too, LCG. I don't know if I will stick to the plan I said today, but I'll just do as usual probably since I don't eat many carbs on DDs either.

One week down, and 3 more days to go! I must say, I haven't seen any dramatic weight loss since doing this, but I know it's better for me. I'll stick with my original plan and have no treats until Halloween.

WTG GF! I haven't seen any dramatic losses, but it's been less than a week. I can see that I am going down, finally, so that's a plus. And, I enjoy having better control over my UDs. I'm going to stick with it as long as I can. I have no interest in candy at all, for a change.
