I try to stay away from all grains.. I have IBS and when I cut out the grains my symptoms improved drastically..
I also stopped having restless leg syndrome after I gave up the grains..

I see no reason to avoid gluten unless you have an issue with it. Just my opinion as a massive bread lover! :)

It sure does for me, and I suspect most of us would be better off without it.

Gluten is a gut irritant. Once your intestinal lining is compromised, food particles are able to leak out (they call it leaky gut syndrome). Food particles that are not in the intestines are seen as foreign invaders and are attacked. They say once a food has been attacked it continues to be seen as foreign, even if it is in the digestive tract- setting people up for all kinds of reactions to foods that would not normally cause a reaction. If you can heal your gut, over time foods can be reintroduced again.

Read Wheat Belly. It is fascinating.

My daughter and I eliminated gluten for a week, then reintroduced it doing the pulse test (someone here mentioned it), and we didn't react at all. I don't give it a second thought now.

I know how important it is to avoid gluten for those with celiac and gluten intolerance. I've seen how life changing it can be for those people, so I'm really glad there are so many great products available for them.

For myself, I don't go out of my way to avoid it, but I do avoid grains most of the time, just because:

*it's a habit after years of LC
*my body feels better when I don't have too much of that stuff
*I don't like to spend valuable calories on "fillers" like crackers or rice or pasta. I like what goes on them just fine by themselves

I'm not negatively effected by gluten so it's not even on my radar of things to watch out for or track. I know that for people who have celiac disease it is a really big deal.

I follow a paleo/primal way of eating so I'm of course going to say get rid of gluten and all grains and sugar because they are just not good for you. I've read way to much about the negative effects of gluten on gut and brain health, even if you don't have celiac disease, to make them a regular part of my diet. Getting rid of them will help with mood, sleep, digestion, allergies, clarity of mind, bloating and weight loss. I occasionally have a cheat day where I will have something grain based, but I usually feel the effects of it for days trying to recover and I find more and more that it is not worth it.

Just my two cents, and it works for me.

I personally feel it's kind of overwhelming to eliminate this and that, while also trying to lose weight and fast eod. I am in admiration of those that can do all of that, but I don't see myself as being that "good". ;)

OMG My life has changed getting gluten out of my diet. I feel like new person. I was so crippled from it that I was afraid to leave the house or get a job. I feel normal now just gotta get the weight moving again. Im starting a dd tomorrow. I am basically lowcarb but I dont EVER want to go back to living the way I did. For the first time in my life I dont feel deprived because I now know how gluten affects me and it scares the crap out of me to go back to 24-7 cramping. I dont care if I ever eat a piece of cake again when I feel this good. I know my husband has heard me say a million times in the last couple months I cant believe how good my stomach feels. So for me gluten has no place in my diet!!!

Tried it for a while, didn't really see many if any changes, added it back, and didn't see any negative changes.

Missed too much of it when I was on Atkins for 3 months. Didn't see it as a sustainable way of life for myself. Has not negatively effected weight loss. I do not go overboard on it, and still try to stay away from white breads, more cause I don't like the taste than anything, but I really enjoy a WOE where I can eat these foods.

Our wheat today is not the wheat of our grandparents. (This is not even in reference to GMO wheat.) Strains were changed and the wheat that is available today is not a healthy product.

While I have not eliminated it from my personal diet, I know that for the best health, I SHOULD. It does not affect me from a digestive point of view at all, but that is far from the only point, as Panelman so succintly pointed out.

We all have to make our own decisions about what is best for us and our bodies. I utilize the 80/20 rule on this kind of thing...eliminate it much of the time, don't sweat the occasional deviation.

Me, I have Celiac, so I strive to never have it, get it through cross contamination or breath it in. It makes me very very sick!

I am leaning more and more toward eliminating sugar. As much as I love it and have loved being able to eat it on UDs, it has become somewhat of an obsession. I end up eating sugary treats more than anything else, and I just want more and more. Definitely one of the reasons I am having trouble losing weight too, I imagine. I also want to eliminate snacky processed foods, which are so convenient, but again work much like sugar in that I can't limit my intake. Wish me luck, this is just the beginning of thinking seriously about it for me.

Good luck with this. If you commit to doing it for a week you can evaluate how it feels on the 7th day. Then decide if you want to continue.

I think you may be onto something really great here Cindy. Good luck with this experiment. I would bet that doing this could make all the difference in the world in how you feel physically, as well as mentally about those treats. I know that I am able to control my portions of sweets/treats now in a way that would never have been possible before. I attribute it to eliminating them completely for some time, and then adding them back in slowly, and mostly only occasionally.

I do think I'll probably have treats every now and then, especially with the holidays coming up. However, this obsessive need to have cake, cookies, pie and ice cream every single UD is getting old. I feel almost deprived if I can't have dessert, which is silly. I need to find some good LC treats to have...

You know what's been sounding good to me, and I just saw in a magazine? Baking up some thinly sliced deli pepperoni (375* for 10-12 minutes) until they're like chips and using them as crackers with some good hummus. LC and tasty!

I nuke the pepperoni,, it is quicker and crisps right up.. On an UD dip them in whipped cream cheese... sooo good.

Nuking them is a great idea! Don't know why I didn't think of that. I guess I just have turning the over on on the brain, since it's cooling down.
