Newbie questions

Hi JUDD gang,

I have 2 questions. Is the UP day supposed to be low carb? I'm confused as to why this 'group' is in a low carb setting.

Is the UP DAY a cal controlled day?

I've read through a lot of the stickies and am gathering information. I have a friend and her husband that have lost 25/31 pounds on 5:2, and that's what made me start looking into this WOE.

I do not follow low carb at all, but some juddd buds do.
You get your UD and DD calories from Dr. Johnson's website. If you google Alternate Day Diet you will find his site and can calculate your UD and DD numbers.

Hi Mary! Welcome to this wonderful group. Most of us don't control carbs, but that's how many of us started, hence being on the LCF board. There are some who keep JUDDD also LC, and I've most certainly done it. My first couple of months were both. Then the holidays came and I added in all the treats I wanted and lost 9 pounds in December last year.

I still trend toward the LC, just because that's what my body likes, and that's what I like to eat, but I have carbs whenever I want them, as long as they're within my calorie limits.

Welcome Mary! I was confused at first too about different ways of eating being included on the LCF site. I guess it started out as LC eating only, but other plans snuck in, and now we have a board for those too!

Just as Librarygirl says, the mods here are so generous, if you look you will find so many different plans here.

I did Atkins for 11 years and loved it but I wanted to enjoy a wider variety of foods without gaining back my losses. I was very nervous at first but now I eat whatever I choose.

Many here do stick to low carb, but with JUDDD it is a matter of choice.


If you do decide to join us here, I look forward to getting to know you. This is a truly supportive group of people.

Thanks ladies! So have you tried 5:2, which seems like it would be easier, or just kept with the JUDDD guidelines?

I would have to assume that results are quicker with JUDDD.

This is really such an interesting WOE. I agree with all the health benefits I've read about.

Not sure if I should go with JUDDD, 5:2 or even 4:3.

I've not tried anything but regular EOD JUDDD. Right now I'm too focused on finishing with weight loss, but I'm looking forward to playing around at maintenance!

In maintenance I've done 4:3 and now 5:2. I maintain perfectly with 5:2. I don't count on UDs and my 2 DDs are usually under 300. I did very strict EOD rotations during WLM with very low DDs, usually under 200.

Thanks again ladies

Starting JUDDD today.

My plan is to not go over my 'allowed' cals for DD/UD. Not worry about windows of time, nor type of food.

Journaling the first couple of weeks to figure out cravings, etc, and what to do about it.

I figure that the tweaking will start when I need to change things up.

I'm currently reading fellow juddd member's experience with HWC and potatoes.

I think your plan is great. Start out simple and don't play with the 'hacks' if you can avoid them yet. You want to get your body used to the 500 DDs and the numbers you are allowed for your UDs and get the Sirt1 flowing. Leave the hacks til later if you find you need them. They don't work for everyone.

If you have come straight from LC you may see a gain at first but it will soon disappear. Good to have you with us.
