Potato Hack Thread #2

Well, I guess I'll start a new thread to continue our discussion as the original discussion (70 pgs. here: A DD Hack) had to be closed due to its length.

Here's today's weight status:

Day 1 174
Day 2 173
Day 3 173
Day 4 172
Day 5 170 - had a regular day of low-carb eating
Day 6 172 - resumed PH
Day 7 171

I tried this hack for five days and I didn't get anywhere with it. I didn't lose nor gain weight (odd). I used russet potatoes. How do you eat your taters?

A variety of ways: Roasted hot with S&P, roasted & chilled with S&P (cold) or dry fried, potato soup made with boiling broth of the potatoes, MW potato chips from thin slices, mashed made with potato boiling broth, grated and dry fried, roasted, chilled and then cut into wedges and baked in hot oven until crisp. In other words, a mixture of cold/hot potatoes.

I also drink 1T. unmodified potato starch (a highly resistant starch) stirred into some flavored water at each meal.

@Pooti and your question at the end of the other thread re: my visit to the doc for more labs recently. Thanks for asking. My labs came out good on lipids, glucose, thyroid, BP (she is halving my meds!), good cholesterol/trigs. The kidney scare was a false reading in April, apparently, due to my concurrent allergic reaction to lupin flour (and the steroids they use to treat it). The body fighting off allergens (and steroids) elevates creatinine levels in the blood. Elevated levels (mine was 2.6 when normal is .5-1.1) are usually considered a strong indicator of serious kidney dysfunction. The next reading was back down to .8 and my allergic skin reaction to the lupin flour is totally gone now that I'm not eating it anymore.

So I'm impressed my "fill-in" doc last month caught what my regular doc missed. She's now my new doc and BTW not anti-low-carb!! She did say, however, NO MORE LUPIN FLOUR!!

I should know better than to weigh early in the morning. I always weigh my lowest weight at around 10am. I'm actually down to 170 today, so the 2# bounce was likely just water gain during my 1-day cessation. 160's here I come!

I am glad your test results were good and that the flour you are allergic to is easily avoided. I am Looking forward to seeing that 160 number soon in your stats Peggy! I am traveling this week so won't be doing the hack again until next week. I hope to then see the 140's finally.

Peggy I'm so relieved it was due to the lupin allergy and that your kidneys are hummin' along just fine!! I look forward to following your journey. I have no doubts you will see success in PHing!

Congrats Peggy into the 160s for you.

I am on the cusp of getting into the 150's. Last weigh in was 158 I think.
Think I'm going to pitch my lupin flour. There is a taste that I don't like.
Raw lentils or raw something I can't get rid of. Glad your doctor found out
right away. I'll pray for your success.

Miss Pootie, keep on going gal. You have a lifetime to be thin as you
want to be. Healthy beautiful woman.

Thanks, Pooti.

Barb, I don't miss that "bean-y" taste one bit. You have to drown that out with other flavorings when using lupin flour. The lemon cookies I did were the only thing I made with it that I thought did a good job of hiding that lentil taste. But I was looking forward to testing those waters. But no can do.

Have an eye appt. at 9am. Will wait 'til I get back to weigh.

Woohoo!! How many potatoes are you eating a day? Anything else or just potatoes? I tried to read the 1st PH thread but I got confused.

On potato days, I'm just eating potatoes, occasionally with a bit of green onion/chives chopped on top. I eat to satiety. That's usually one at lunch, two at dinner and 1 again around 8-9 pm. I don't seem to be hungry at breakfast when on a potato hack. I'm eltting up and eating normal low-darb foods after about 4 days of hacking. I tend to bound up 1# on my off-day low-carb foods day.

Day 1 174
Day 2 173
Day 3 173
Day 4 172

Day 7 171
Day 8 170
Day 9 169
Day 10 170

No breakie today. Either I must have used too much salt on my taters yesterday, or it was the bite of my new recipe of meatballs on zoodles I fixed for hubby last night.

Having a baked tater as I am typing. May bake a layered dish int he oven for diinner.

This is so interesting and congratulations! Who'd a thunk eating potatoes would work like this?! I love them but anytime I eat starchy foods I gain. French fries are one of my favorite foods in the world! I'd love to eat crispy baked fries all day! I wonder what it is about the potato hack that makes it work? Do you think it's because that's all your eating is potatoes?

Are you concerned that when you go back to eating a bigger variety of foods that you'll gain the weight back?

Pooti, mine average 8 oz. raw weight. Mostly I buy reds, sometimes white flesh, sometimes the yellow flesh. The reds seem creamier (since we can't add butter, just spices and vinegar) and I'm able to eat the reds with just salt and pepper. I make some into potato chips in the microwave (usually for a nighttime snack). Not too fond of the mealier, drier russets, but then I've never liked them as well as red potatoes.

Welcome, Kel1. Be sure you read the beginning of this thread with links to the "how to do it" information. No added fat is allowed. Just spices, herbs or vinegar. So be sure you are dry baking and dry frying them on a pan without oils. Going back to eating low-carb, adding in fat, may cause that. I tend to bounce up 1-2# when I stop. But I try to not let more than 1-2 days go by between hacks so I don't gain back all I lost. I'm new at this, Kel, so I don't really know what will happen (if I ever get to goal, which I've struggled to do for 4+ years now, stalled at 170 that long) when I finally stop hacking for good.

Day 10, still holding at 170. My metabolism is on to me again. So I'm going to let up for a couple days and eat regular HFLC. Will resume in a few days. I began my day with 2 scrambled eggs and some of the leaner pieces from a package of bacon ends and pieces I needed to render out for the grease.

Hi everyone!

I've hacked on and off for the last year or so and am back at it. Had some interesting things happen last year, including dramatic BG reductions and a loss of a shoe size that have been retained. I'm off a couple of medications that I was on last year so I'm curious as to how that might impact my results.

I'm trying something slightly different that had come up early in the last thread but I haven't seen a lot of lately--this week I'm hacking until dinner then having a normal HFLC dinner every night. I'm also incorporating 1T potato starch in water 2x daily, once in the morning and once at night before dinner. I've had some health issues so I haven't been weighing but I'm getting on the scale Saturday which seems to be my best weigh-in day to give me a baseline. Next week I may try a couple of days in a row of hacking to see where that gets me but mostly I'm just hoping to decrease carb sensitivity.

I'll be checking in here to follow what and how others are doing.

One question for everyone. I seem to do fine during the day on my hacks then lose focus at night and really want protein and/or fat (which is why I'm trying the current method). Any thoughts on why this might be the case other than sheer boredom? I LIKE potatoes--it's just that by dinner I want something else.

I experience the same cravings for protein and fat in the evenings. I think that's natural really. Man throughout history has eaten a diet heavy in protein and fat, not carbs. Fighting those urges has been difficult for me as well Shelby. And it usually why I have to end my hacks in 4-5 days max. Only my very first hack was I able to go for 11 days successfully.

Well, my baseline is officially set: 153.8. This is about 7 pounds up from where I landed after my last hCG round, 4 over what is really acceptable, and about 9 up from where I'd really like to be. The hack hasn't been a great weight loss tool for me but...that was then, this is now, and anything can happen. I will weigh at least once per week and possible also after all tater days. I have the opportunity to hack straight through next week but I think I will play it by ear and see just where the hack takes me. If I want something different for dinner, I will make sure it's at least 4 hours after tater lunch. So far today, I have had black coffee with stevia and taters for lunch. I baked up a giant pan of sliced golds with green onions, spices, and FF chicken broth. I'll cool those down and have a slice of them for dinner. Something different might help. Anywho, here we GO!

Ok, here goes nothing! Starting the hack in earnest today. Really REALLY going to try for just potatoes for the next 5 days but if I'm feeling deprived I will go off and have a normal LC dinner. So far, I've been fine with my black coffee and stevia for "breakfast" which is a bit surprising coming from someone who loves her HWC! I think the good quality coffee makes all the difference in the world. Anyway, I'm going to give it my best shot and see where I land. My birthday is a week from tomorrow so I'd like to be feeling all around better by then. The hack usually takes down any inflammation I have and gives me "happy tummy" syndrome. The baked golds were good but I'm not super in love with the seasoning that I chose. Oh well. 3 more meals and the pan with be done. I baked up 5 pounds of russets last night and will boil up some more reds today. All in all, a cheap week of eating, no matter how you slice it...

Good luck to you Shelby. I'm starting today, too. I had half a chilled, roasted potato for breakfast. Potato soup made with the potato broth for lunch. We're heading out on a 2-week vacation driving through the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks to follow the changing leaf color back down to Texas on Thursday. I know I can do this until then; not sure about after that however. We'll just have to see. I can always do LCHF while I'm gone and get back on the hacks when we get back.

Good luck to you both. I was gonna do start today but have too many veggies in the fridge that need eating, so will likely start it next Monday. I usually do Monday - Friday.

Can't wait to hear results.

Peggy your trip sounds incredible! Have fun!

Hi. I haven't been on this site in a few months, but have started the potato diet officially today, although for the past week I have incorporated them into my diet at least once a day, sometimes 2.

But I am noticing heartburn?! Pretty bad, too. Right now it is 4 pm, and I have had about 13 oz of potatoes so far. I am not hungry, but it may also be due to the brick I'm feeling in my stomach!

Anyone else have this problem, or read of others having this issue? I can't seem to find a lot of reference to it. Am I alone?

Well, I made it though yesterday but had a fail today on the hack when a friend came to town unexpectedly and wanted Thai for lunch. If we'd had steak or something, I probably could have gotten a tater but there's not a whole lot of taters, plain or otherwise at a Thai restaurant. I tried for low-carb and had a Thai beef salad with what turned out to be a pretty sweet dressing--boo! I think taters for dinner though and back hacking tomorrow.
