Sit down with a cuppa, this could get quite long …....

Sorry, this is a fortnight late. I was waiting for a photo and hoping to post before and after pics but still haven't worked out how to do that with a jpeg file!

I did my first DD on August 27th last year. My weight had started to creep up, then suddenly it was zooming up and, despite my best efforts, it was refusing to even stop, let alone come back down. I'm 5'2” with longish legs, a short back and a smallish frame. I don't carry weight well at all! With a bloated round face and a pregnant-looking midriff, I looked awful and was an obvious candidate for diabetes. I felt desperate.

My natural adult weight was about 115 lbs until I had my children in the early 1980s and it went up to about 126 lbs. I had no trouble maintaining that weight, without trying, until around my 40th birthday, in 1993. I'd gone back to Uni and whacked on about 30 lbs, which didn't just melt off again when I resumed “normal” eating, much to my surprise and dismay. I eventually joined SW in 1996 and lost 20lbs over six months. Unfortunately, I then proceeded to steadily put much of it back on again fairly quickly and I guess I simply adjusted to being overweight and living in shapeless, midriff-hiding clothes.

By 2007, I found myself not just overweight, but also chronically hungry. I'd have breakfast or lunch and shortly after, I felt starved. I found myself needing to eat every two to three hours. I would get irritable, then panicky, then sick if I went without food for too long. In fact, if I was irritable, my family would automatically ask “Are you hungry?”

I started to do some research and found the Richards' book about leptin. I followed their advice for lengthening the interval between meals. The Richards said that as we get older, we might need to increase exercise in order to break insulin resistance. I have ME and vigorous exercise is out of the question. However, I was sick of being overweight and early in 2008, I paid to walk on a treadmill for 40 minutes three times per week, while following a high protein diet. I lost ten pounds over five weeks but felt absolutely dreadful by the time I finished!

Thanks to the Richards, I'd conquered my insulin resistance and I learned the golden rule – always pin down carbs with some protein. I was no longer chronically starving, though still at least ten pounds overweight. I maintained the weight without effort, until last year when, as mentioned, my weight suddenly started to rise again.

I tried low-carb, and rapidly gained seven pounds. I tried fast five for a few days but I was very uncomfortable and I could never have sustained it past a week. Thank goodness, as I was researching IF, I came across JUDDD! I was very impressed by the health benefits, bought Dr Johnson's book, read it in one sitting and proceeded to stock up on diet shakes, as Dr J recommended for the first two weeks.

I still remember my very first DD. I approached it with a sense of adventure and a lot of trepidation. How on earth would I survive on only 300 cals per day? What did that even look like? I'd never counted calories in my life and was extremely resistant to the idea – but I was also desperate!

I tried an Atkins shake. I found it sickly and, as it was about 150 cals, I had it in two tiny doses, for lunch and tea. It left a horrid sweet taste in my mouth all day and I vowed I'd never have another one. I never even tried the Slimfast ones I'd got in for my induction phase, because they were 300 cals each. It was going to have to be real food for me! Fortunately I discovered the JBs and I've never looked back.

The first DD wasn't the hunger-filled trial I was anticipating. Maybe the novelty saw me through. I spent a lot of the day reading this forum and realising that most of you were eating real food, even on low DDs.

I was intrigued to find that I wasn't very hungry the following day and actually struggled to get in 1500 calories. However, the first few DD nights were difficult. I was hungry and my body was kind of buzzing. Something was certainly happening!

Thanks to the info on the forum, I soon discovered that the longer I could fast on DDs, the easier they were. I also discovered that a hot drink could cure afternoon hunger pangs. I developed a system of eating a small dinner sometime after 6pm and having a snack at bedtime so I didn't go to bed hungry. It was getting easier!

I think the real breakthrough came when I discovered shirataki noodles. Last winter, they were my staple DD dinner, heated in half a pot of low-cal soup. The soups were fairly bland and very watery. Not the best nutrition! However, thanks to my calorie counting, I realised I could easily make much better and much lower-cal soup myself. I'd make a big pan full of low-carb veggie soup or ratatouille and have some with the noodles on DDs. Then the following UD, I'd add beans and maybe rice or sweet potato, or enjoy some toast to follow.

I haven't always been able to do strict rotations, though I did keep strictly within my numbers whenever I could. I don't JUDDD on vacation and, when I can't stick to rotations, I just do sensible UDs and fit in a DD as soon as possible. Life happened bigtime last year and we dealt with family yukky stuff, vacations, lots of celebrations and a wedding. I continued to lose slowly but steadily throughout.

The one really disciplined thing I've done is to keep a diary right from the beginning, logging what I've eaten and when. It's helped me to spot trends and not get discouraged by bounces or an unmoving scale. I know you can get apps and online techie things to do that but I've enjoyed doing my (52 page!) table on the word processor.

I find posting on the daily weigh-in thread has kept me accountable and, when I need to take myself in hand, the daily menu threads are invaluable too.

My weight loss has been slow compared to many of the JBs but that's no problem. Because my life was so chaotic last year, I learned how forgiving JUDDD is and that, if you are patient and stick with it, JUDDD works!

Through JUDDD, I've discovered shiritaki noodles, gluc pud, bulletproof cocoa, PB2 and courgette spaghetti. Thanks to JUDDD, I've lost 24 lbs - which doesn't sound a lot but I wish I could post the photos. I can't believe how different I look! I now weigh the same as when I'd had my children, 30 years ago. That was the best 60th birthday present for me this year! I've also done absolutely no exercise.

The weight is staying off, despite my rather lax rotations recently. I've still a couple of pounds I'm hoping to shift but I've been experimenting with 600-700 cal DDs and 1600-1700 cal UDs, with no ill effects so far. Next, I'm looking forward to having full fat bio-live yogurt again, instead of the dead, fat-free Greek stuff that's been a staple over the last 12 months!

This year, I've given loads of baggy clothes to charity and have a lovely new wardrobe. I can enjoy wearing slinky tops and skinny jeggings for the first time in 20 years. But the main thing is my face. I can't believe how much slimmer it is! It will always be round but it no longer looks like a supermoon. I think the best day was when I realised I no longer avoid seeing myself in the mirror.

One of the main benefits has been to find this wonderful forum The support and friendship are just awesome. It's been a privilege to JUDDD alongside you and share your JUDDD journeys.

Thanks so much for all your encouragement on the weigh-in threads. I just keep on plugging on getting the right calories, macros and exercise in and sometimes don't really notice that I'm actually losing weight too - but you always do!

Oh, I clicked on the photo's and could see you much better - wow, that is a transformation, especially your face - you look puffy in the first one, and slim in the second one. Well done my friend, keep up the good work!

My face looks so different. I really hated how it looked last year!

The noodles are made from zucchini. You can see the Spiralo behind me. That plateful was essentially a prawn salad and was around 250 calories.

Wow! That's a huge amount of food for the calories.

JUDDD is a great WOE but I'd never have succeeded without the JBs. It really is a privilege to know such loving and supportive people.



Ann, here it is:

DD prawn salad, about 250 cals.

I tend to cook by sticking my head in the fridge, seeing what needs eating and looking for stuff to go with it. This recipe is just a framework suggestion, so feel free to adapt at will, just keeping the ingredients lowcal.

Dressing:
Chop a juicy medium tomato fairly fine.
Mix with a sweet bell pepper and a chunk of cucumber, chopped medium.
I don't like raw onions but they, or scallions, are an obvious optional ingredient too.
Stir well with some tasty seasoning - try a level tspn pesto, or something spicy and Thai-ish, whatever you like.

Spiralize a medium courgette/zucchini into noodles and mix well with the dressing.
If you like you can leave about 30 mins for flavours to develop but it isn't essential.
If it needs more oomph, squeeze in some lemon or lime juice, or tabasco - or whatever works for you.
You can then add some more salad veggies if you like - try quartered cherry tomatoes and chopped raw mushrooms or maybe some celery.

Add about 4oz/100g peeled shrimps/prawns and stir well.

Shred plenty of romaine leaves (or similar) and mix with a generous handful of rocket/arugula. Watercress is good too.
Spread on a plate and top with the prawny mixture.

The one in the photo used pesto and I also added some fresh basil, chopped capers and olives.

YUM!

I was inspired by your picture, and finally asked DH to get me the GEFU Spirelli (and a Jawbone UP) for my birthday in a couple of weeks. I chose the Gefu because it's smaller and my house/kitchen are tiny and don't need any more gadgets. I can't wait to try it out!
