Diet soda

I just had a wonderful, healthy lunch of a big crunchy, colorful, veggie packed salad and then -- topped it off with a glass full of chemicals.

I have diet soda every day of my life and look forward to it but I know it's not healthy. I know this is one of those topics that never goes away but I need some external motivation to cut back or cut out the diet soda that I love. Is this just a harmless indulgence? My gut tells me no but has anyone seen their weight loss or general health improved by cutting out diet soda?

Hi, my name is Char, and I'm a diet Coke addict!

Actually I generally only have one a day - usually a Coke Zero, or if I'm on the run, I'll go through McDonald's and get their large diet Coke for a buck.

I DID quit the stuff a few years back and honestly, I didn't notice much difference. The only thing I DO notice is that if I drink more than 2 in a day, I'll get a big red ugly zit on my nose! And yes I've narrowed it down to the diet Coke. No Coke - no zit. Too much Coke - zit. Cause and effect.

So I'm sure it's not good for me (nobody said it was a health food anyway) but I ENJOY it so much that I'm back to one-a-day and not suffering anything for it. Should I give it up? Yep, I should. Am I GOING to give it up? Maybe. Someday. This is not that day.

I never, ever thought I could give up diet soda. Or soda in any form. Used to be I was a Dr. Pepper fiend. As a matter of fact, I'm sitting here with a Dr. Pepper t-shirt on as we speak!

I still love my Diet Dr. Pepper, and the occasional Fresca or diet root beer, but somewhere along the line, I just quit drinking it regularly. I don't know why. I'd just much rather drink iced tea now. I still do have the occasional can. Once a week maybe, but usually not even that often. I can't really tell any difference in anything, but I'm sure it's better I don't drink it. I still get plenty of AS in my iced tea though.

I was never really big on soda anyway, and don't drink lots of it, but I don't notice any difference when I have it. Mainly, if I have one, it's along with rum or gin, so maybe the alcohol offsets the chemicals?!

ETA: Cute picture Carol. Love that big smile!

I wish I could be of help to you, but I quit drinking soda my junior year of High school and 12 years later I haven't missed it.

Discussions and research about diet soda oversimplify the issue. A distinction needs to be made between those containing caffeine and those without. There are many different types of sweeteners too. They are not the same. The research I've seen doesn't make these distinctions.

Moreover, they just look at people who use diet soda and people who don't - as if those populations were identical. That doesn't make sense because the people who use diet soda usually do so because they already have a metabolic issue. Yet the researchers look at the health of those two groups and draw conclusions about diet soda, even though most of the people using it were already metabolically resistant, diabetic, or overweight.

Here's what I do, based on what I've studied over the years: I avoid caffeine and aspartame. I use sucralose, erythritol, stevia, and all the others. That generally means I drink Diet Shasta, Diet Rite, and Cascade Ice.

Looking good Carol !

We don't drink much diet coke here, although I do get the odd craving - like Dawn, it's better with some vodka in it, but I've never thought of it as that bad. However, my oldest son used to work fast food (added bonus: all the free soda you can drink!) He had massive migraines / headaches all the time while working that job. After running through a couple of doctors and getting nowhere, we narrowed it down ourselves to the aspartame in the diet soda he was drinking at work. He quit those and voila - no more headaches. He's ok to have one once in awhile now, but generally has to keep away.

I feel ya!! I'm on my third Diet Pepsi free day and boy oh boy was I ever craving one today! I KNOW it's not good for me but I sure do miss the taste and the bubbles. Been subbing those Ice drinks (love the pink grapefruit!).

I've gone through periods of my life where I've given it up, but I always go back to diet soda when I'm on a diet. It's comforting to me and makes feel satisfied when I'm hungry but don't want to eat. I've given up trying to give it up! I avoid most processed foods like the plague, but diet soda is my crutch.

I have quit Diet Cokes many times and I can never tell any difference in my weight loss on or off the Diet Coke. Tried iced tea which works sometimes for me. I go on and off. Not much willpower there huh?

What a difference a JUDD makes....

Quit the caffeine sodas and use the clear water with flavorings sodas.
I have no intention of giving up my two a day...
Well heck, I made it to 80 so it's all good in the JUDD

I never really cared for soda even before I was low carb, but when I would drink it I wanted the sweet kind not diet because I was addicted to sugar and sweet things. Now I don't drink soda at all, and don't miss it. It's the carbonation that I don't like. As a kid I used to wait for it to go flat then drink it. I don't like carbonated drinks at all period, not even flavored carbonated zero calorie water. I might drink some if it's there but I'm not a fan of it.

For some reason the "healther zero calorie sodas" sweetened with erythritol drives my hunger. I love the taste of Tab but it gives me restless leg syndrome. No doubt in my mind that Tab gives me restless leg syndrome. I've proven it by adding it and then subtracting it from my diet and monitoring its effects on me physically.

Diet soda (aspartame, saccharine, and splenda) gives me migraines, bad BAD migraines. So I gave it up 2 years ago. And never looked back.

But I know if it didn't cause me such severe pain, I would have it... especially when dieting. Sad right?

I do love Zevia though, I don't drink it every day, but when the craving for soda hits, it's wonderful!

Maybe try reading "Excitotoxins: the Taste that Kills." I read it a couple years ago, aspartame is bad stuff!

I lose better for sure when I avoid all diet soda. I was having 1 glass of diet coke/Pepsi 1x per week for more than a year and doing great. Then I got hooked on the diet ICE soda- holey moly does it bloat me up like crazy! I've told DW at least 3x that I was not buying anymore, but I still do...

It is just water weight, but nonetheless doesn't make me happy to feel bloated. My body would surely thank me for going back to water w/ lemon. I think I will commit to a week with no diet ice... I can do it!!!!!!!!! I hope <fingers crossed>

I have the strangest body ever. I cannot drink water or iced tea without horrible heartburn, but I can drink diet soda & coffee with no problem. What do you think I drink? I recently tried drinking iced tea (unsweetened) & water again, hoping that hitting goal weight would have helped, but nope, heartburn and NAUSEA ensued. I'm not giving up what I can drink any time soon!

I agree Carol ... what a great smile, and I love your hair up! Very cute!

I don't drink soda regularly, but once in a while it really hits the spot for a sweet tooth or on a down day. I do seem to be sometimes thrown off on the scale by the sodium in soda though?

It was Mt Dew anonymous for me. It took me years to break that habit, which basically I have traded for Dt Dew and less often. I can't have the stuff in my house; not diet and not regular. If it is here I will drink soda and only soda until it is gone. I still have a few Dt Dews a week, but only when I am out and about. I haven't had any today since I never left the house.

There have been a few times when I gave it up completely (regular not diet) like each time I was pregnant and one other time when I switched to Red Raspberry Dt Rite. I am like a for real, serious addict with that stuff. I know I could slip and go back to "the juice" because it has happened before whenever I have stopped being vigilant and let it back in the house.

I am a professed COKE ZERO addict. I drank Diet Pepsi before Coke Zero came out, since then, only Coke Zero. I have no desire to stop drinking it at all. I have cut back, I only have 2 glasses a day now, that's a huge step for me. Before that, DH and I could drink a 2 liter or more together a day!

Carol, love the SMILE, SHIRT and overall happiness your pictures always SHOW!

I drink diet sodas, coffee and tea (rarely). Anything really except water. I drank 40 oz of water today, trying to get better about it. I could brew tea and make iced tea with splenda and I think that would satisfy me. It's laziness really, and also I just love diet Sunkist and diet Mt. Dew. I also have no desire to give up caffeine. Cannot imagine a world without it.

I used to be a big soda (POP, here) drinker... Mt. Dew, Cherry Coke, Dr. Pepper, you name it -NEVER diet. Several years ago, I discovered flavored water (NOT carbonated... YUCK!) and just gradually started drinking more water, less pop. bought the water by the cases... Then discovered powdered flavor packets, then the squirt bottle favors. I still have a pop here and there, at a restaurant, or a party... But I hardly ever buy it to stock in my house. I just prefer the flavored water most times now.

Coffee is another story! 1/2 - 1 pot a day for me. Iced or hot, I mix it with soy slender chocolate soy milk. I swear it helps me stay on plan.

Maybe I am weird but I love water. Especially cold distilled water. I switched to distilled years ago when I read something about it in a book. I prefer the taste over any other water - "drinking" water, bottled, especially faucet! It all tastes dirty to me.

I rarely drink any flavored waters, tea, or anything. I do love coffee. And occasionally plain seltzer water.

I drink way too much coffee I'm sure. Never less than 2 cups, but sometimes easily 4 or maybe more

I always have my Brita full of water in the fridge and keep true orange, true lime and true lemon is the house at all times in case I don't have fresh lemon or lime. I haven't touched an Ice soda since I swore them off a few days ago. I've been temped, but nope- not gonna give in till at least 1 week with out any.

I love Coke Zero, Pepsi Max, Diet Dr. Pepper and will drink diet root beer if it's around. I don't really buy it for the house but if I'm at work late and run out of bottled water I might go to the soda machine and get some (although I HATe spending $1.50 for it).
