Thursday UD: What's your plan?

Hi everyone! I was going to potato hack today but I decided to wait until DD. I already cooked some potatoes in preparation, so I had some for breakfast. LOL.

Pre-workout - banana
Breakfast - cold potatoes, iced coffee with almond milk
Lunch - salad w/ greens, chicken, carrot, onion, mushrooms, barley, lentils
Dinner - whole wheat pasta w/ marinara meat (bison) sauce

Snacks will be: plain greek yogurt w. PB2 & sweetener, an egg white veggie scramble and maybe cheese/crackers

Aiming for 2000.

Hey Amy - glad you're sticking to your UD despite the little oops earlier in the week.

I have baked potatoes ready too. Mine are going to become potato skins with lots of bacon bits and full fat sour cream for dinner.

B: greek yogurt w/honey, plum
L: another plum, beef stew
D: potato skins, caesar salad, bbq hamburger or baked chicken drums w/hot sauce
S: 100 calorie bag of roasted peas OR baked cheetos OR cheddar popcorn (not all 3)

Thanks! I have learned from experience that if I try to restrict too much I run the risk of triggering another binge, which God knows I want to avoid at all costs!

Trying to get back in the swing of things. Had a successful DD yesterday - the first in forever!

B- tons of unsweetened tea (to start to lose some bloat!), low cal breakfast wrap (180) plus special K crisps (100)
S - lollipop (80)
L- huge salad with tons of veggies, 1/4 avocado, a low cal cheese stick and some sunflower seeds, spray dressing (300?)

That leaves about 1000 for dinner. I am thinking salmon or chicken with sweet potato fries and some pepper slices and cherry tomatoes. Maybe a WW ice cream for desert if I have room.

The blog Evolutionary Psychiatry has an interesting post on endocannabinoids (I think it's one of the biological triggers behind episodic over-eating in response to stress and although it can be a positive stress in some ways, low calorie DD's could also result in excessive stress for some people?) called "Endocannabinoids, Fat, and Rats." Might help you figure this thing out and what's triggering it? I saw another paper recently called:
"Pharmacological modulation of the endocannabinoid signalling alters binge-type eating behaviour in female rats" and it made me wonder what would happen if someone went for higher fat intake on DD's (like Rebecca does).
Sorry for the thread hijack - I just think it's so important that you see this as a biological response and not some kind of character / control deficiency. (Speaking as someone who used to be able to down 4 boxes (back when they used to come in boxes) of potato chips in a day at one point.)

Thanks jacquelinejolie - I will check it out! I don't think it's the DD stress that's doing it. I'm happy to say that I'm binging less frequently since starting JUDDD and feel more in control now than I did before. I do know that it always happens when I'm in a heightened emotional state (usually stress). Tuesday was horrible at work and I know that's what started it. I still haven't figured out why some stressful days trigger a binge though and some (most) don't. There's got to be body chemistry involved somehow. I'm going to do some more reading.

Work is a four letter word for sure. I've always gained in response to stressful work places - when I felt something was beyond my control and nothing I could do would make it better or help (maybe have a look at the studies on learned helplessness and CBT - Judith Beck has an extremely good book out called The Beck Diet Solution or Beck Diet for Life - that you can use in conjunction with JUDDD. It's not a "diet / eat this way" book, it's behavioural and you use it with your current diet).
My stress was usually in response to excessively perfectionist / OCD directors. That triggers my own perfectionist tendencies and feelings of inadequacy and leads to "all or nothing" thinking, wanting to self-medicate / zone out with fat + alcohol and so on... Funny how it's easy to control myself when I don't have to deal with those neurotic types (including my own neurotic self).

Interesting that you mentioned Beck, Jacquelinejolie. I have learned many positive behavioral lessons by following Beck. And as you say, your OWN diet along with Beck.

Amy, I would like to say, I learned that when work frustrated me and stressed me out - for me it was an individual at work, rather than the work itself. I decided NOT to give the person that much. control. over. me. For me to GAIN weight by stuffing calories down my throat in reaction to someone else... I worked at it, but once I rationalized it - with Beck's approach, I managed to stop the destructive behavior. Just food for thought.

My UD will consist of:
coffee with half and half, 2 bacon strips, 1 oz. hard cheddar
yogurt and pb granola bar
"sandwich and cookies" at an event
Eating out for dinner - plan for fish, taters and veggies
If enough calories left - perhaps some ice cream

Awwww! Thanks! Luckily my co-workers are wonderful. My work stress is usually caused by a heavy workload. Too many things to do, not enough time to do them! LOL. I have done a good job catching up the past couple of days though.

I am ordering the Beck book and "Brain Over Binge" (another one I've heard good things about) today!

And now.....back to those UD menus. I always feel bad when I've "hijacked" a thread.

Well I added pintos n cheese to my taco bell lunch and that bumps it up to 540 for lunch. My, my, my how those little calories do add up don't they. lol

It's easy. Apparently my eyes / plans are bigger than my stomach! Or at least the inside stomach, if not the outside stomach.

I think the DD shrinks things up inside somehow. Seriously. Eating too much volume has become a bit painful. And it's worse when compounded with hormonal bloating. I've never experienced that before in my life. This could be a good thing.

What an inspiration you girls are for UPP Day

1,380 cal.
Hometown Buffet

1 Fried chicken breast
Green beans - 1 c.
1 c. mashed potatoes
Chicken stir fry
1 c. rice
Steamed cabbage if they have it today
Cottage cheese 1/2 c. with a couple slices of peach.

Kefir this morning 150 cal.

Will be back this evening to read the threads.

I *could* skip dinner, but I won't. I will be over my UD calories by day's end. NEVER had a problem since the beginning (9 months ago).

LOL - I hear you. I don't know, I promised myself at the beginning here that I would not eat (much) if I wasn't hungry. Am sort of trying to follow intuitive eating principles on UD's: Eat when you're hungry, stop when you're satisfied, eat what you really want to have. I do try to get in a dose of protein (greek yogurt etc.) if I find that I'm not very hungry for supper on an UD (that hasn't really happened since I bumped up my DD intake). That helps keep DD's pretty much hunger free and totally controlled.

In the first few weeks when I tried to go for lower DD's, I felt famished on UD's and then nauseous and repelled by food in general after I ate. Not sure if it's because I was eating low fat / high fat or what that was. It just seemed sort of sad that I couldn't enjoy an UD as much as I should be able to.

Oh well. It's working for all of us in one way or another, so vive la difference! Different strokes for different folks and all that.

Made a big mistake on my food today

In the first place I had way too many carbs.
In the second place, when I got to Hometown Buffet,
the stir fry area was closed.

My amended meal:
1 fried chicken breast
1/2 c. mashed potato, little blob of gravy
Green beans
Steamed Cabbage
1/4 c. carrots
1/4 c. kraut
1/2 smoked sausage
2 oz. steak
1/4 c. sugar free frozen yogurt
They had no fruit that was ripe so I didn't do the cottage cheese.

Tonight I am going to make some home made frozen yogurt.
If it's good I will have 1/2 c. of it with a few frozen strawberries.

So, question. Does everyone eat all their UD calories?

For the first time, I literally had to force myself to eat up to the full calories. I'm supposed to have 1,774 but around 1000-12000 this evening, I was just done. I still felt like I needed to eat all the way up to make it through tomorrow's DD so I had the rest of the cheese pizza and now feel immensely guilty about it even though I'm still within calories =/

Breakfast: Leftover cheese pizza from pizza party last night I didn't eat at (210)
Lunch: Big salad (250) + Snickers ice cream bar (270)
Dinner: Chicken Burrito (460) + Mousse cup (60)
Late-night calorie boosting pizza: 500

Dinner was edamame, miso soup, one piece of DH's roll (too sweet!), and my "Nuclear Roll." I'm having wine now.

Spoonful, to answer your question, I personally try to eat every single one of my UD calories. When I've reduced them by too much, or too soon, I've stalled. My losses were much better if I ate as close to my UD numbers as possible, and then as low as I was comfortable on my DDs. That was often lower than my DD allowance.

Spoonful, I also try (well, I don't really have to try at all) to eat all my UD calories. In fact, when I'm not getting enough, I stall. But an occasional day when you just don't feel hungry (they're rare for me, but they do happen for one reason or another occasionally) then I don't force it. I figure it won't hurt if it doesn't happen very often. You do run the danger of feeling very hungry the next day during DD.

I do. I've just heard it helps the JUDDD magic. My "intuitive eating" instinct is broken though so I don't really get that "I'm not hungry so I'm not going to eat" feeling. Hunger or not, I can always eat. If I have calories to spare at the end of an UD, I usually go for nuts because they are high calorie low volume so I'm not going to feel stuffed, ya know?
