The Alternate Day Diet Revised

Hi,

I was just on amazon and found this:

The Alternate-Day Diet Revised: The Original Up-Day-Down-Day Eating Plan to Turn on Your "Skinny Gene," Shed the Pounds, and Live a Longer and Healthier Life Paperback
by James B. Johnson M.D. (Author) , Donald R. Laub Sr. M.D. (Author)

Anyone know what's changed?

Forgive me if this has already been discussed.

It looks like a pre-release that won't be available until Dec. 31, 2013.

My guess is this revised version would contain more testimonials / results, more scientific background (since the last one was published in 2009). Also probably good timing since it's coming out right at the new year's resolution time - and capitalizes on the popularization of the WOE that came about with 5:2 / The Fast Diet. Good for book sales!

In the description of the book it says the following.. I bolded what the changes appear to be.. Like Jacqueline said.. it doesn't come out till December 31st but it seems it is going to be a good read.

Quote:
The original intermittent fasting diet – now up-dated and expanded

An easy-to-follow, safe, and science-based alternate-day calorie-restriction program that promotes weight loss and longevity, The Alternate-Day Diet includes the most up-to-date research on calorie restriction and intermittent fasting as well as additional techniques (including supplementation and eating according to the body’s natural circadian rhythms) to enhance the diet’s effectiveness.
The Alternate-Day Diet describes how limiting caloric intake every other day can activate a gene called SIRT1 which reduces inflammation, lowers free radical stress, improves insulin resistance, and most important, causes fat loss by releasing fat cells from around the organs. In short, activating SIRT1 promotes weight loss and longevity.

The simple two-step program calls for you to limit calories one day and eat normally the next and the book outlines lifestyle suggestions to support the diet’s effectiveness including proper hydration and exercise, which are also key components to maximizing weight-loss.

Throughout, you will be inspired by the anecdotes and testimonials from real people who have used the diet successfully to lose weight, and to find relief from a range of health issues including heart disease, Type II diabetes, autoimmune diseases, and even menopause-related hot flashes.
It looks like they are adding the additional techniques (tweaks?) and testimonials from people who have used the diet and their opinions of it or what they found helped to get the best possible results from the diet.

It will be interesting to see if he leans more towards lower carb/glycemic 'real' foods as well.

ooh, I hope not! I love that JUDDD supports all kinds of eating. I might not even have been inspired to try this plan if it was low carb or low glycemic. Too restrictive for me, although I do try to eat healthy and clean most of the time.

I agree. I would have never tried JUDDD if I thought the food choices would be restricted AND very low calories every other day.

I agree. I hope he still says "eat normally" every other day- even though we all know that means different things to different people.

I really like Dr. Johnson. When his website was down for several months, I called his offiice and left a message that many JUDDD people missed his site (I also post on another website for JUDDD.) I told him many new JUDDD people wished they had the calculator to work with. They called me back and within a couple of days his website went back up. I thought that was nice, and really felt listened to.

I know they e-mailed Leo a while back because of her success with JUDDD. So, I know that they know about us.

That is so great! I look forward to reading it and will probably even buy it (I read the first one as a library loaner). I'm really glad to see Dr. Johnson is still involved in this research. But why did they not ask us for testimonials for the book?

Me too! I came to JUDDD primarily for the unrestricted WOE, and learned about the benefits of AF afterward.

Cool! I was wondering too, why didn't they contact some of us?! I wish Dawn and Carly, at least, had gotten a page.

There was an attempt, but it was not allowed per the rules of the site.

ETA: Also, IIRC, there was no way for the site to confirm that it was Dr. J or one of his people trying to contact us, or if it was just someone claiming to be him.

Was that the guy who posted a few times awhile back asking for input and then the posts disappeared?

I agree, Dawn and Carly were the two that motivated me to come back to JUDDD after reading so many of their posts, and seeing their fabulous results. Not to mention the many others who have succeeded here--too many successes to mention in one post.

I hate that you couldn't contact the person directly on your own though. You could inspire so many.

I'll chime in as well that a big selling point of this plan for me was the unrestricted food choices. That means I get to eat as I normally would and get to enjoy some of my faves like ice cream and candy...just every other day. As time passes though I find myself craving healthier food options and not "needing" the treats as often. I don't know if that's a part of JUDDD magic but it rings true in my case so far.

There was one post that purported to be directly from Dr. J. I'm thinking that's the one that "may" have been included in the book.

There was another from a reporter who was doing an article for a fitness magazine, I think.

I think it is part of the juddd magic and has been true for many of us.

I remember when those posts popped up and then disappeared. I guess they can go on and read w/o posting.

Wonder when that will happen for me. I think my diet is getting worse and worse and I sure don't crave anything healthy.. But I am eating less and less meat for some reason. I just don't want it but then I am not interested in veggies either.
But JUDDD was interesting to me in that I could eat anything I wanted on my UD's. I was sooooo tired of trying to eat LC day after day after day. BUT I LOVE JUDDD and continue the EOD even in maintenance since I am still prone to UUAD's.

I admit, I'm a pretty fast loser on any kind of LC / clean plan - as long as it's when I'm over 150?? But on WW, I ate a fair amount of processed junk (remember WOW chips - aggh, they were nasty!) and only lost 20 pounds in 100+ days (actually think it was over 18 weeks and then we moved. I was just tracking my days OP at the time as a success more than #'s lost...) while being really diligent and getting up every morning at 4:30 to get an hour of exercise in. Didn't even eat all my exercise points. And was coming off of a pregnancy weight! On a pretty clean / low GI plan even w/o much exercise, I'm good for 2 pounds a week easy. Or used to be. The old gray mare, she ain't what she used to be.

I have found the same thing - I am satisfied with not eating something sweet on every UD, but I'm thinking that in the beginning I needed to prove I could eat sweets and/or junk food and lose - and then just lost the craving for them, knowing I could have them if I wanted within my calories. It's like they lost their appeal?? I think overall it's both physical craving and mental craving for me!
