Negative Feelings about Plus-Sized Clothing Now

No offense to anyone, please, but my thoughts have gotten negative about plus-sized clothing recently. I get in-boxes and notices about these clothes on FB and email occasionally and I see them now and think, No, I don't want to look like that! Before I decided to lose weight I was trying to find trendy, good-looking plus-sized clothes and trying to put the best spin on it, but I'm not satisfied to remain in that category anymore. Anyone else have these feelings since losing weight?

I'm really excited about making the transition to "regular" sizes, but I'm in that weird in-between place right now where pretty much everything in the women's/plus department is too big, but last time I checked not all size 16s fit well (some do -- I'm wearing 16 capris right now -- but some are still snug). Where is the size in between there? Also, the petites department is proportioned to my height but not everything even comes in 16 or even 14, so I'm in a tough spot right now.

I'm glad that plus size clothing has come a long way, but as a shorter person it was still hard for me to find clothes that were proportioned right for me and I pretty much could only find stuff that looked good at the more expensive stores. I will really love having increasing options as my size goes down.

So - I don't know that I feel negative exactly, but I do feel happy when I find something that fits in the petites department.

I feel so good to be out of plus sizes. Just as you do.

Girls,

Being 4' 11" is not a nice thing when you weigh what I do.
However, having said that, I am so grateful to be into sizes where
I don't have to shop at the Big Girl's shop in the mall.
Up top I still have to be XL but hopefully when I am at goal
that too shall be in smaller size.

The happy place is that the clothing in plus sizes is much more
lovely that it used to be.

We shall all have our dreams come true.

I agree with Christina and Barbo, that at 5'2" most plus sized clothing really didn't fit well. I think plus sized clothing has come a long way, but I certainly have loads of options now that I wear a 2P or 4P or S/ XS. Beside having tons of choices compared to finding plus sized petites, I like how I look in clothes now. (Undressed is another story completely)

I often shop with Mint when she is over here and she is short too. We despair at the poor design of plus sized clothes. You cannot simply take a design and make it bigger and bigger. Much more thought should go into them.

And yes, they need to consider different markets too. A young woman and a woman in her late middle age don't want the same designs necessarily.

On the opposite side of the spectrum from you petite ladies, I had the exact same problem with plus size, finding things proportioned for my tall body. It's still hard in "normal" size clothing, but there are more options. I found some lovely plus size clothing, that I would still wear today if it fit me. I think mostly it boils down to taste, and how much you're willing to spend. There are good options out there, but you have to search and they cost more.

I think what I was trying to say, while being delicate as possible, is that I don't want the body that fits into plus-sized clothing. I have found some beautiful plus-sized clothes, but no matter how expensive or gorgeous the clothing, it did not disguise the fact that *I* was plus-sized. I can now wear flea-market finds or good will finds that cost me less than $5.00 to work and get tons of compliments, because *I* look so much better.

Agreed. I've never liked shopping for clothes, whether I was fat or thin, but it's much less traumatic now.

I know exactly what you mean LG. I'd see Plus Sized clothing on models where it just looked right and proportionate and wonder why it never looked that way on my lumpy body. I'm happy to be back in "normal" sized clothing but that has a lot less to do with the clothing and more to do with me liking my body better now.

Cindy, I think I know what you're talking about. Like Christina, I'm in that in-between sizing (and also a shortie) where I'm still wearing a few of my plus sized items, but also have found some regular sized items that look good. I was recently contemplating calling the companies of the many plus-sized catalogs I get and asking them to remove me from their lists. I now look at the things they offer and the very characteristics that made me like them when I was heavier (flowing, boxy, long) now irritate me because I want to show off my new hourglass figure, so I'm looking for a little more fitted, with a waist, shirts not so long, etc.

Yes it is! I'm really looking forward to buying some new winter clothes in a few months, in much smaller sizes than last winter. Sweaters that have a touch of cling instead of huge, oversized hulks of things!

And the way you're going lately, 10 more pounds isn't going to be that far away!

I did notice when I was a size 16/18 that the plus size clothes I found were also for much taller people, and I'm not short - I'm 5'5, and I don't know who thinks that is you grow wide, you also grow tall, haha! A friend of mine makes them look so good, but she is closer to 5'8 or 5'9 I think - they're perfect for her. I'm glad to be in a size 12 with the "short" folk.

That is true! All the pants I bought, nearly, are too long. I guess they think if you're that big, you must be tall.

At 5'9", it was hard to find plus sized pants long enough for me, and my legs are not that long for my height.

I am short too and I was so glad to pass on my tent type muumuus even though they were pretty. Women stopped me wanting to know where I got them. Gosh I'm glad they're gone. I have a friend who works at a nursing home and I donated them there, she said there were ladies who would enjoy them.

I agree with you girls, who thought just because you got wider you got taller. I also never thought I'd see the day a 14 was considered plus size.

I think a big part of what you're talking about is the difference between wanting to hide your body and show it off. I had to get down to a size 16 to feel comfortable wearing pants without a long, drapy shirt hiding the belly area. I also got to a point that plus-size designs didn't appeal anymore - aside from jeans. I have yet to find a pair of misses' jeans that fit me comfortably, so I'll probably still shop in the women's department until I get down to a 12.

What really struck me the day I posted this was an ad, popping up especially for me. It was a plus-sized model in some nice clothes and it said, "Gorgeous Plus-Sized Clothes!" She was very pretty, but very big. I remember when I had despaired of ever losing weight and I thought, "well I can look nice. These models look nice." And they do, but even if I look absolutely gorgeous I'm not content to be that big, pretty woman any more. Do you know what I mean?

I absolutely know what you mean, Cindy. On top of that, my body never looked like the models' bodies, even at the same sizes. They had big but firm arms and legs, mine were big and not firm. And somehow their bellies, while large, never poke out and they have nice waists - for awhile I did not. So that was discouraging too. Probably the work of Spanx and airbrushing, but still demoralizing.

I agree with you all.

When I shopped in the women's plus size dept, I most always thought that the designers must think plus size wome's heads were big, too, because it seemed like all the tops neck openings were all so huge and cut low. Don't think I ended up ever buying anything that I thought looked good-just made do with what I thought was wearable.

It makes me terribly sad how ill fitting and matronly looking plus sized clothes are. {sigh} Someone needs to make some younger, trendier, better fitting ones! (that are varied in lengths for pants like regular sizes do!) So frustrating!

I never have been content to look like this, not one day of my life. I have PCOS and hypothyroid and this started early for me. I've been fighting this battle since childhood and don't remember ever feeling comfortable in my own skin.

Very interesting topic, Cindy! I totally agree with Deedee, I always wondered why I didn't look as good as the models do in plus size clothing. They appeared to have every part of their body firm and smooth (1 tummy instead of 3!). Then I saw a program on TV which showed that they use 12-14 size models and pictures are just magnified! On the other hand if they showed how one would look in reality with all the different bulges sticking out, we would never go for it! I do love the freedom of shopping for "normal" size clothes but even some of these don't look as good on me as they do on the models because they are using tall skinny models! So the story continues! I do have to admit though that I am wearing more fitted clothes and like someone mentioned already not hiding behind the baggy ones!

Worse still, a lot of them use size 10s, and clip the tops in back to hide the extra material. It's false advertising of the worst sort. I complained to Lane Bryant about it once and they replied that in focus grouping their ads they've found plus-size women don't like to see their clothes on plus-size models. I seriously doubt that, but maybe it's true. They're selling the idea that their clothes will magically transform us into a model, and we buy into it.

Flutter, if you're looking for younger and trendier plus-size clothes, Torrid has some cool stuff – very rock & roll. It's definitely not your mama's plus-size clothing! And they get extra points for having women with a variety of body-types, and women of color as models as well.

Melinda (Flutter) wouldn't be able to find anything to fit her now at Torrid since she's at goal, but I'm glad for the younger ladies who are plus size that it's around.

It was extremely rare for me to find anything in petite plus other than jeans or black pants. And that is all I own (except one pair of grey that no longer fits). I have been wearing black pants to work pretty much every day for years! Fortunately I like black and can add variety with the tops, but why are there not more choices? I am getting closer and closer to the 14s fitting well instead of tightly, so maybe I can have some variety soon.

I think Kohl's has a big selection of Petites that start at 16P. When I was 16/14P I got a bunch of items at Kohl's to hold me over. I barely got to enjoy them, but I wasn't going to complain!

I get it.

In the first Dr. Atkins book, (I think) he said, "there is nothing flattering about a size 22 dress". I forget the page number.

It echoes in my mind and my daughter often says she reminds herself of that quote from the book.
