Carol, can you tell me how you worked up to doing the hula hoop for so long? Did you do 5 minutes, then 10, etc.? Or did you just do however much you felt comfortable doing each time? Are you using the weighted hoop?

My Chiro told me I could start exercising again, and my Zumba classes aren't working with my schedule right now, so I'm thinking of trying the hula hoop again. I was doing 5 minutes comfortably, but really never worked up to more.

You bet! I ordered a Danskin Now 2.5 lb Fitness Hoop from Walmart for $20. Fluffy_Bunny was just looking and found that particular model is out of stock online, but there's another one for $29 that looks very similar. I really love the one I got. You assemble it very easily and it seems quite durable. I didn't get any hip bruising when I started either.

So how did I build up? Well, at first I thought it was going to be another $20 down the drain, because I couldn't keep it up for even 2 spins. I tried and tried and it kept dropping straight to the floor. The breakthrough came when I was standing in my living room and I suddenly saw myself in the glass of my entertainment center and the TV which was turned off. Somehow seeing myself gave me the "biofeedback" or whatever to keep it up for several spins. So I kept at it.

After a few more tries (read days) I could keep it going for a minute or so. Then a couple of minutes. Then 5 in a row! My biggest problem was my arms got tired from holding them up and out of the way!

So then I just got better at it, and stronger, and I could do 10 minutes. I don't always do 30 minutes straight, although I can some days. Mostly I do 10 or 15 minute increments, several times during the day. Or I'll do 15 or 20 minutes, then do awhile of some other exercise and then another 15 or 20.

It just took me some time and a lot of patience, but I was determined. And I love it! It's so goofy, but I really find it to be fun! And I really do feel like my waist is trimming up nicely. I just do it in front of the TV and watch something I really enjoy, and the time flies by.

My only problem now is that when I do it for more than 20 minutes or so, my feet start to fall asleep. So I'm developing the ability to keep it spinning while stomping my feet to get the blood moving to them. It must look REALLY lovely, but I don't care!

Thanks Carol. I have a weighted hoop too, and the first time I tried, I was able to do it for 5 minutes without dropping it, but I was afraid to do more because I kept hearing about others getting bruises. I think I'm just not going to worry about it.

It's on its way to me and I can't wait to get started! I feel like a kid on Christmas eve.

I think you'll be okay too. I've had days when my waist/hips felt tender, but I really don't think it had anything to do with the hoop, and I just kept at it. No worse for the wear.
