Anyone tracking average weekly net cals? How low do you go?

Just finished week one. I haven't really felt great physically since starting but I'm pushing through because it's not THAT bad and I'm loving the results and am hopeful that my body (and mind - ha!) will adjust soon enough. I track everything in one of the popular "not allowed to talk about them" sites and see that last week I averaged 972 net calories per day (meaning it subtracts my exercise cals, which I track with an HRM). That's really low! I know JUDDD is different and that I need to get away from the whole "never go below 1200 calories" old school mindset, but I'll admit that I'm a little concerned about this. I'm doing 500 cal DDs/ 2000 cal UDs.

I guess I'd love to hear some thoughts on this, some reassurance really! I'm also curious if anyone else is closely tracking net cals and if you have similarly low numbers.

I haven't done any weekly tracking, but I'd say my average daily looks to be about 1250. I don't deduct anything for exercise though. I'm doing lower bodyweight exercises and upper body weight exercises, but nothing hard core. I'm also walking 5 to 6 days a week, but it's not super strenuous at this point. It is moving though!

I wouldn't worry about your calories being too low. 2000 on an UD is a nice amount of food, and as I'm sure you've heard, it's the swing between the higher cal and lower cal days that gets the SIRTs going and causes all the magic.

And I do believe you will get adjusted to JUDDD soon, both mind and body! It takes a while but soon it will feel so right.

You're perfectly fine using those numbers. As a matter of fact, those numbers are much higher than I do in WLM, even when I'm exercising, and I've noticed no ill effects or metabolic slow-down.

In WLM this time around I've been doing 300 DD and UD 1400-1800 so say 1600 on average- so 300/1600. My Fitbit has me burning 1702-1918 over each of the last 10 days. My daily calorie average is 950, but I have been burning no less than 1700 in any given day. On July 7th I weighed 126.9 and today 122.8. I feel great and since I want to see 120lb by Labor Day I should be on track to see that by then. I have been juddding since March 2012. I maintained from Feb. 2013 till July 7th, 2013 so this next set of pound has come off nicely which I didn't expect. The thing is that I'm healthier than ever so I don't listen to that mumbo jumbo about 1200 calorie minimum. I get to enjoy the occasional 1800 blow out and still lose so I'm not complaining- and yes... 1800 calories actually feels like a food fest, blow out.

I don't worry about the 1200 calorie thing on JUDDD too much because between having a regular, "non dieting" amount of calories every other day and the positive health benefits of the fasting days, I think we are ok.

I still have the library copy of The Fast Diet, and there's a quote in there I thought was reassuring. Even though he is referring to a 5:2 plan it seems applicable to JUDDD as well:

"Will my body go into starvation mode and hang on to fat?
Since you're not restricting calories every day, your body will not enter the fabled "starvation mode." Your fasting will never be intense. It will only every be conservative and short lived, so while your body will burn energy from its fat stores, it will not burn muscle tissue. Research has shown that occasional fasting does not suppress the metabolism. Even extreme fasting -- an absolute fast for three consecutive days or on every other day for three weeks-- generates no decrease in basal metabolic rate . . . if you follow the moderate, judicious approach advised here, a short window without food is a scientifically sanctioned path to health and well-being." (p. 119)

There was a link to this study as a reference: Alternate-day fasting in nonobese subjects: e... [Am J Clin Nutr. 2005] - PubMed - NCBI

However, if you ever reduce your calories and your weight loss stalls, a lot of us have popped out of that by going back to a higher level again.

Thanks everyone! I'm not exactly worried about a metabolic slowdown but mostly worried about doing what's right for a healthy body. It's been drilled into my head for so long to properly fuel your body and not go under certain numbers that it's hard to throw that thinking away. I'm trying!

Elphie, I have that SAME problem! 1200, 1200, drilled into my head! I'm ever so slowly ejecting it from my brain, but after so many years it's tough. Even my calorie tracker yells at me on every DD for not eating 1200.
