Goal Weight Setting?

Hey JB's!

When I joined the forum I set my goal weight as 165 pounds. I like how I look and feel at that weight, however, according to the BMI scale I'm considered "overweight" at that weight by 6 pounds.

In high school I weighed 140-150 pounds and felt good but was a tad gaunt looking in the face for my taste. With all these factors considered I've reset my goal at 160 pounds. I'll be 1 pound into the overweight category, but I figure since my ultimate goal is to get down to 20% body fat it shouldn't be too bad.

Also, going 5 pounds lower than my original goal gives me some wiggle room for quick correction in case the pounds ever start creeping up.

I'm curious to know how did you choose your goal weight? Especially if you have always been overweight or haven't been at a healthy weight in a long time?

WOE: Whatever plan keeps me around 150 lbs!
I'm struggling with this right now.

Initially, I chose 175 because that's the weight I was when DH and I started dating. That was also MORE than 100 pounds from my starting weight and I didn't think I'd ever get there.

At 175, I was still a tiny bit "overweight" according to BMI. I lowered my goal to 165 and was pretty pleased with my weight there. I went into maintenance, and still lost a few more pounds, and leveled off between 155-157. I stayed there for a few months, but recently decided I wanted to lose a few more pounds because I'm not happy with my stomach.

Now I'm in a very odd place where I feel great everywhere but my stomach, and I continue to lose inches everywhere BUT my stomach. I worry that I'll get too thin but still have a tummy, so I'm throwing around ideas right now.

I think it's best to set an initial goal then reevaluate when you get there.

I started this most recent weight loss journey with 120 as my goal weight. I don't think I've actually seen that weight since high school. It was just sort of my fantasy weight, and at my height, anywhere between 108 and 145 is considered normal, so it was smack in the middle of that range.

The last time I lost weight and was semi happy with how I looked I got to 130 and stayed there for about 5 minutes! I liked my size, but still thought my butt and thighs could be smaller. Now looking back, I looked damm good at that weight, but it was about 12 years ago in my 30's.

Somewhere along the way this time, I revised my goal weight to 140. Now that I'm in my mid 40s I felt like that might be a good weight for me. I don't want my face and neck to look old and stringy. 140 will be only 5 pounds into my *ideal* range, but if I look and feel good there, I'm okay. I do reserve the right to change my mind once I get there though!

Me too! I felt like 135 was a great weight for me, but that was in college, and I also worked really hard to get to that weight and stayed there for about five minutes!! Of course that was before JUDDD!

I also looked at the BMI chart, and 135 is 24. A little close to the border (141 starts the "overweight" category at 25), but taking into account my larger frame, wanting to be realistic, and how I felt at that weight in college, it seems like a good goal ... but I'm with these ladies, I'll have to re-evaluate when I get closer. I know from the past that even in the 150s I feel and look pretty good, so I will really feel I've "made it" when I get there, and anything below will be a bonus.

It's been 15 years since I've been under 200 (just) and 23 years since I've been in the 150s ... It's so fun and amazing to be finally heading that way again.

I chose 130 because that's about ten from the upper limit of my healthy range, and when KiMi see pics from my Marine Corps days at that weight, I was looking good! I looked better at 120, but I'm being realistic. I don't exercise as much as I did then, and I was much younger. Of course, I'll reevaluate when I get there.

I'm 5'8" and I chose my first goal of 154 by the old formula that was in use back when I was in high school: 100 pounds + 5 pounds for each inch over 5', plus or minus 10%. At 154 I will be officially NORMAL.

Of course, I have no idea how I will look at that weight. I vaguely remember being 150 when I was 20, and feeling pretty pleased with myself for the short time I was at that weight. But I'm considerable older now.

I'm going to do my first try at maintenance when I get to 166, which will be 3/4 of the way. I'd like to practice staying the same, PLUS give my body time to 'settle' before I go further. I think I am doing pretty well right now- my face will thin out for a few days, every couple of weeks, and then go back to normal, so I think my fat is gradually coming off from all over. (That's my theory, and I'm sticking to it!)

Well i chose 190 as my first goal due to i really didnt think my body would let me get any smaller.. one i was there i set my sites on 175 which sounded good, then the bmi chart my height said i would still be over weight if i was over 169.. so that became my new goal.. I went to 165 and did great , as soon as i started to work out i jumped up tad and now my body just seams happy holding at 169.

Well, I am where LCG & Christina have their goals set, and I am also 5'4". (However, as I said somewhere here, I suspect I have shrunk!) SO, I picked 135 because this is a few pounds lower than my PCP told me he wanted me at health-wise and I thought it was realistic to maintain at. I married about 118# but I was super young and I am not sure how realistic 120ish is at my age. However, as Dawn just posted, I am not happy with my big ole gut as this weight. <shrug>honestly, I am just fine in my skin right now, though. I am just very, very thankful to be at this point and if all I manage is staying here, that is huge! Any lower seems greedy right now. Lol

I picked a weight of 130lbs as a goal but I realised about the 140lbs point that I was considerably broader at that weight than I had been when I gained the weight so I would be broader at 130lbs than I'd anticipated. So, it seems that I have a lot more body fat (and less muscle) than I did the last time when I was this weight.

My amended goal is now that I'd like to be approx. 25% body fat (for reasons I outlined in Yennie's thread: How did (or do) you pick your goal? ). Realistically, I might not be able to reduce by that much and settle for 30% or so.

I won't really be able to make an informed decision until I have a fairly reliable body fat assessment, and I'm booked in for a Bod Pod reading on July 19. The other advantage of this is that it will tell me my muscle mass which will allow me to tweak my modified ketogenic diet that I'm using for migraine control. (The modified ketogenic diet is based on adequate/moderate protein intake, and there are various formulae to calculate this that are more accurate if you know your lean muscle mass).

I think there are a number of factors to consider. What is your frame size? Do you exercise, and if so, what type?

I see others here who have much lower goal weights (at the same height) so I think I need to lower mine as well. But then I look back at my high school pictures and see how skinny I was at that goal weight. I know I had more muscle back then, so my goal is to get to my high school weight, but also add muscle.

My sister is 2 inches shorter than me, and weighs 10lbs below my goal weight. She looks really skinny, but has a good amount of lean muscle mass. Honestly, you'd think she weighs a lot less than she actually does!

Well, I'm 100% where Dawn is. I just hate my poochy stomach, but I can't afford to loose much off other areas than that pooch. I initially picked 112 then raised it to 117. When I got to 126 I felt pretty good and could fit in most of the clothes that luckily I had saved, so I called goal. I'm not sure how to figure in the weight and appearance of my extra, loose skin. It's considerable on my stomach, upper arms, thighs and even a little on my calves. I'm hoping for 119, but if it doesn't happen I'm really fine and may have to just accept my pooch.

I am struggling with this too, as coming down from 343 a few years back I have considerable lose skin and fat that is never going to move until I get the courage to have my bodylift done, surgeon estimates I could have as much as 18lbs removed, I have set my goal sort of unofficially at 174 as thats the least I've weighed in my adult life and if I get down to that then I wlll probably go and get the lift done and see the final result of my long epic saga of a weight loss journey. My biggest concern is that although I've managed a couple of times to get to the mid 180's it is a desperate struggle and I have never been able to maintain it for long even on plan so its hard to know what the end result will be.

I want to be at a comfortable weight that I can live with the rest of my life. That being said I reserve the right to change my mind. I don't want to "diet" all my life as I am not getting any younger. That is why I am here, it is not a diet but a woe and a lifestyle change that will be comfortable to live with. I know I will never be a schoolgirl again but I sure want energy and movement and a lack of pain that sometimes comes with it as we age hopefully "gracefully". That is my goal...don't worry...be happy..lol

When I started at 250 my real goal in my mind was to get below 200, but I set my goal at 175. That seemed like a nice round number and I had weighed that in high school (I thought I was fat then, but looking back looked pretty decent).

I made it past goal and below 170 for about 27 minutes. I had an injury, surgery, thyroid issues and am back over 200 again. I'd be pretty happy to get back to the 170s, but I had more to lose there. I am shooting for 145 now. I have never been there (since 6th grade anyway), but my grandma and aunt have/had the same basic build as me and both were happy in the 140s.

For me it's not necessarily a weight but a size. I'm at a 16 in pants which is starting to be a 'comfortable loose' but not loose enough to drop to 14s and be at the uncomfortable stage again. I have a lot of 12s in my closet and simply want to get back into those. My weight isn't dropping as quickly as I wish it would but my pants fit better, so I'll take it. I would like to get to 145 just because it's a nice number, but when I fit into my size 12s, I weighed closer to 160. Have to see WHEN I get there!!!

Thank for the feedback ladies! and Lacey I agree with you. For me the two things that I'm most focused on is my body fat and also my size. I'd like to be in a comfortable size 8. Even at well over 200 pounds my size 14 pants are very baggy. I believe at 160 with 20% body fat and taking my body shape into account I'll be in a solid 8 and I haven't seen that in over a decade.

You've got the height advantage so that is great. At 199 I was wearing a 20 in pants and a 2x-3x top. So being over 200 and wearing a 14 is pretty good. You will be in those 8's before you know it with JUDDD.

Very True Carly! A few extra inches of height are a blessing, but in my case it's also kind of a curse. My body hides extra weight very well and I can gain and lose as much as 20 pounds without looking that much different or changing sizes. Weighing regularly and setting a strict 5 pound ceiling is going to be very important for me once the weight is off so things don't get out of control.

When that happens it's usually a very unflattering photo of myself (exactly what spurned this mission to get to and stay at a healthy weight once and for all) that smacks me back to reality!

Used to say 120. I'm only 5'2" and that puts me towards the upper end of the range for my height.

The lightest I've been as an adult is 140 - 20 years ago! However, my bottom half was fitting into a size 8-10 (UK)! So, that's the weight I've chosen for now!
