WOE: 5:2 now JUDDD
Start Date: June 2013
A little concerned about my calorie counts

I got my UD and DD calories and am hoping to get some reassurance. I understand that Dr. J suggests you start with 500 calories on your DD to "ease" into it. Well, I have been doing 5:2 now for a month - and feel really comfortable with 500 calories. I have even been under several times and can do two days in a row...
My issue is that for my age and weight my DD calculation is 333 calories. Holy crap, that is low! I managed 427 today and I thought that was damn good.
On the other hand, I am having a very hard losing weight - mostly a menopausal thing - and am prepared to do whatever it takes. I am just, well, a bit freaked about eating so few calories e/o day, especially since I am anticipating my UD will leave me hungry (a reason why it is easier for me to do a second day of VLC after a fast day). I know the bounce is important, so I will try to eat my 1680 - which, by the way, feels HUGE now after doing 500 or 1200 a day for over four weeks.
Any wisdom or advice would be most appreciated! Especially from any of you 50+ who can relate to struggling with weight loss.
Best,
J

My DD calories were 347 I think since I am over 60. But I kept at it and I am in maintenance and I do a lot of really low DD's even now so i can have higher UD's. Just my way of coping. I started at 500/2000 and lost even with those calories. I went over on many UD's but NEVER messed up a DD. For some reason I will wake up on a DD and know I will not eat.

You could also look at the range of DD numbers. You don't HAVE to use the 20% number if you're willing to lose a little slower. I think my WLM range is anywhere from 330 to 600ish. I'm fine with low DDs, so I stick to my 20% or below most of the time, but I think I'd still lose with slightly higher DDs. I do NOT advocate doing back to back DDs, and I DO advocate getting as close to your UD numbers as possible.

I really think that raising your up days from 1200 to 1680 will make it easier, over time if not right away, to do the 333 calories on the DD. I agree, though, that you don't have to do 20% if you feel better on more. (I actually seem to lose just as well if not better on 25-35% DD calories.) There's a good chance that even though the weekly calorie averages between what you've been doing and your JUDDD caloreis are very similar, you might lose lose better on JUDDD because it will be better for your metabolism to have more calories on your up days.

Hi there, your numbers sound very similar to mine - currently my UD figure is 1648 and my DD figures are:-

At 20% weigh loss mode (at the little or no exercise setting) are 330 kcals
At 25% weight loss mode - 412 kcals
At 30% weight loss mode - 494 kcals
At 35% weight loss mode - 577 kcals

I'm 53, 5 feet 3 inches, weigh in at 154 pounds and am peri-menopausal, i've been losing steadily over the last 9 weeks - 24 pounds since 4th May.

I usually stick to the DD kcals somewhere between the 412 and 494 (25% and 30% WLM) figures. I always feel hungry on an UD if i have too low a DD - maybe it's in my mind but this has been working well so i don't, at the moment, have a reason to change it!

On an UD i have as close as i can to my UD kcals - sometime 50 or so less somes a 100 or so more. As you say the difference in kcals between the DD and the UD kcals is what makes JUDDD work so well.

Hope this helps

Oh, and don't do two DDs in a row - there is no need to put yourself through that torture on JUDDD!! If you have to change your rotations, have two UDs in a row - in the big scheme of things 2 UDs in a row once in a while makes absolutely no difference whatsoever.

I have never done super low DD's. (I think I'm the only one here that goes with higher DD numbers) With my hypoglycemia issues, it simply isn't possible. I lose focus and find working difficult. I keep my DD's around 600-800c. Now lately I have been maintaining by choice. I will buckle down soon to get to goal, but I am close. Have you considered switching to EOD rotations instead of doing 5:2? OH and I have never done 2 DD's in a row, I always opt for 2 up days if needed.

Oh my gosh, this helps...YOU ARE MY TWIN! I weigh 156 lb otherwise...53 and 5'3''. Except I am fortunate enough to be menopausal. If you can call it that!!! I can't tell you how helpful this is and how HOPEFUL I feel that it has worked for you.

And I know and am quite excited about my UD. No more VLC on non-fast days...

Really, thank you.

J

You're not the only one! I'm doing higher DDs too ... from my observations they seem to work better for me for weight loss.
