What a difference and how interesting to see the change in your musculature/posture and centre of gravity. :) Super outcome for all of your efforts - you can see the well-balanced results of your weight-training as it looks as if you've well and truly avoided the 'skinny-fat' shape that some chaps develop. KUTGW

tobelowcarber 07-06-2013 08:37 AM

Amazing transformation. You should be very proud of yourself :clap::up:

Yes, Mike, you have really done a fantastic job! You look amazing and no doubt you feel completely different now as well. When you have time, if you could document and contrast some tidbits about the three methods you used, and why you instituted the change in plans I think it would be extremely beneficial for us.

Congratulations on the new you!!! Thanks so much for sharing your pics!!!

Oh my gosh -- can you say 'WOW'!!! :D Way to go! I must say, your body fat percentage must be really good -- in your last photo, you look like you have a similar composition to my husband -- who's a marathoner and only weighs 165! Go JUDDD and go YOU!

Thanks everyone! Everyone here is so upbeat and encouraging, I hope that my post can help to encourage others and also maybe provide an example of what adding in strength training can accomplish.

I'm not done, I still have to work on my stomach area because I still have a fat store there and some loose skin so I'll continue and see what I can accomplish there. And while I'm at it I'll only get stronger, so I'm good with that.

Kimmie - As far as what I did and why I switched my WOE. When I started I signed up for a personal trainer and saw her once a week and she immediately put me on a low calorie/low fat diet, cutting out processed/fried foods, but including whole grains. I lost the most with this WOE but I also had a lot to lose at that point, but I didn't necessarily feel like I lost 80 pounds, I wasn't full of energy, and I felt hungry all the time, and I was getting diet fatigue.

About then my personal trainer mentioned the Slow Carb Diet (SCD), which cut out all grains and had you eat beans with every meal to provide a slow digesting carb to keep you full and also you eat at least 30 grams of protein at each meal. There were a bunch of other rules, but it also allowed for an all you can eat cheat day once a week with no restrictions and in fact encouraged eating way to excess. I read the book, The 4-hour Body and started doing it but it really didn't seem sustainable, but it actually worked.

Researching some of the science behind the SCD I came across the Paleo diet and then Primal and low carb. Something about Primal really appealed to me and so I bought the book, The Primal Blueprint, read it and started implementing both the diet and the exercise recommendations, specifically lifting and sprinting into my exercise routine which at the time mostly consisted of just walking and 1 PT session a week. Almost immediately I felt better, had way more energy and the fat seemed to be melting off at a much faster pace. I posted the picture below in another thread but once I started on Primal and doing strength training my body fat % seemed to drop more rapidly and more importantly my muscle mass stabilized and stopped dropping. I got down to 220, and then just kinda stopped exercising for a while, through the Christmas holidays, also being a little more lax on my diet and got back up to 236 by the 1st of the year.

I decided at the beginning of the year to get back to it and also my daughter wanted to lose some weight and wanted to try my "primal" diet and start going to the gym too. So we jumped back into it and I got back down to 214.8 and then just seemed to stall. I knew the last 10-15 pounds would be the hardest so I started looking for something different. That is when I cam across JUDDD and watched a documentary on ADF and I said what the heck I'll give it a go and it did the trick and immediately got me past the plateau and to the final picture.

My daughter, who is 5'4", went from 140 to 121 during that time as well, and she is tickled that she could do it, she didn't do JUDDD, just primal.

Well that was long but I hope is helpful.

Thanks! It amazes me sometimes when I look at the middle and last picture. I was beginning to think last year that I couldn't do much more and I was nearing the end. I'm glad I found low carb/primal and the inspiration to keep going.
