yeah it might have been the weird texture with the chopped up dates. It didn't taste bad, probably a different sweetener would be better.

But i thought maybe the dates were to help thicken it too.

No, the dates are used only for sweetening (author of recipe's choice).

I'm glad you liked it scalestepper!! Seems like a lot of the reviewers raved and raved about it, including the person who wrote the recipe...
