You're doing exactly what you're supposed to do - ask questions

I count and I weigh. I'm fortunate in that I make most of the food that we eat so I'm typically reasonably confident about the counts in a way that I wouldn't be if someone else were making it. However, I also batch cook and freeze which makes it easier to portion at the time of packaging rather than have to do it for every meal, IYSWIM.

Dawn's had outstanding success by being scrupulous about counting and evaluating everything she eats - whether it's from Wendy's or different Vietnamese places that serve slightly different Banh Mi.

It has been repeated so often on this board that we should use the no exercise calories that it starts sounding like an official JUDDD guideline, but that did not come from Dr. Johnson ... he included the exercise numbers for a reason. I personally do not believe lower is always better. I think if your calories go to low for what you are burning, it is possible to negatively affect weight loss or to damage your metabolism. My advice is to experiment to find the numbers that work for you, and I actually think it is preferable long term to follow the highest calories on which you can lose for as long as it works. What works for someone else may not work for you, and exercise really does add another element that does not affect those who don't exercise, so I suggest trying some different percentages to see what is the sweet spot for losing for you.
I was actually in a low carb thread where I expressed that I felt there was a such thing as too little calories.... that you'd stop losing and your metabolism would slow. I was really surprised at how many people said that was a myth and there was no such thing as too little, whether exercising or not. That seems to go against pretty much everything I've ever been taught.

Hi everybody! I'm back and starting back up on JUDDD. I did it a couple months ago, lost some, and then quickly let some medical issues I was having throw me into a tailspin and got off track.
Now, I'm back after having my medical procedure done, and raring to go.
I'm excited to get back into it!!

The more I think about it, the more I think I'm going to switch over. I want a dinner roll so bad that I can already taste it.

I was a June newbie and I'm still at 500 Cal DD. I am pleased with my rate of loss so far so unless it slows up, I'm sticking with my current calorie level. My DD foods are always the same. I have my morning supplements in juice for 125 calories and later in the day I have the remainder of my calories in chicken. One "meal" is mainly carbs, the other mainly fat/protein. I think its about finding what works for you.

Yup, i've kept to 500 cals as well since re-starting at the beginning of May, so far i'm 21 pounds down, it works for me so i'm sticking with it for the moment as long as it keeps working.

I count my cals on both UDs and DDs

Piglet513, I eat whatever I want on UDs but I still log and count my calories too to make sure I don't go over.

Two UD's in a row followed by two DD's in a row, followed by holiday food....big mistake to get on the scale! 3 lbs up, but still 2 lbs lower than my start on JUDDD 3 weeks ago. Previously, I wasn't gaining on my UD.

My new strategy: Never do a double DD again (Yes, you warned me!) I can't stop weighing every day, I am a certified addict. I still refuse to be discouraged, I haven't been in the 180's since December, and I'm still there despite the temporary gain.

The book came!! I was surprised to read that the whole idea behind the Up Day is to replicate my normal maintenance levels. I still think 2090 is way too high to maintain, so I might stop trying to find high-calorie foods for the UD. I still want to keep DD as low as possible, and it's usually below 300 with no problem.

One concern: If I lower the calories on the UD, what if I stop losing? Isn't the third week supposed to be a precarious time, when people stall?

Now I need to start setting some goals, and 1/2 pound a week will only get me about 10 pounds down by a special event this fall. Of course, that's 10 lbs I would not have lost....Still, I wish my horrid metablolism would allow me to hope for more.

Hi everybody!! I am into my second week and it is going quite well, had another DD today and they are getting a little easier...I am doing the protein shakes combined with a bit of real food, I think my body likes the 500 calorie ceiling...I am going to keep this for awhile, since I am losing ok still. I have lost 2 more pounds so far so now down 5.8 pounds

Good luck everyone !!

5.8 in your second week is great !

I am having a hard time with "eating whatever I want" on UD's, it just doesn't feel right. I know it will only be a week Monday that I started this WOE, so I'm trying to tell myself to chill out and relax! I had a couple of PopTarts today, no wonder I feel like I'm cheating.

I counted everything, and still have about 500 calories left, but I'm not hungry at all. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow, because I won't have to think so much.

My weekend is over, back to work tomorrow.
Hope you all enjoy yours

Hi Christine! The JUDDD WOE comes with a bouncing scale that is really hard to get used to at first, but after a while a gain after holiday fun won't even phase you, because you will be so confident those pounds will be gone in a normal rotation or two. Have you seen this thread yet? The daily bounce doesn't rock my world (anymore). It's nice that before now you haven't seen the scale go up after UDs, but that is unusual. I rarely maintain or lose after an up day, and when it happens it's a special event. "Gaining" after an up day is really about the weight of the food, and the water retention that goes with more food and possibly sodium/carbs.

Please try not to worry at this point. I think all you need is to go back to your normal rotations and watch the scale come back down. I would not advise reducing your UD calories right now. You are doing fine; you just had holiday food and a disruption to your normal routine. Some JUDDDers have stalled from having their UD calories too low. This has happened to many people here. Reducing UD calories lower than what the calculator tells you is a last resort, only to be considered if the regular calories are not working for you (and by that I mean not losing for more than three weeks of careful, normal rotations).

In my opinion (and Dr. Johnson's too! It's in the book), for most people, the best thing you can do to heal your metabolism is to eat all your UD calories. (and exercise too if you can and it appeals)

There are so many theories! I think the only thing that matters is what is effective for you. I've personally experienced stalling when I increased exercise and decreased calories ... I didn't break through the stall until I increased my calories. A lot of people both here on JUDDD and other places on the web discovered that lowest calories does not always equal best weight loss for them, but others NEED lower calories in order to lose, so I am in favor of starting at the calculator, then adjusting to find what works. The great thing is that the alternate maintenance calories/low calories pattern of JUDDD is supposed to help keep that metabolism up.

So yesterday was a more in control DD - I decided my DD for now will be between the 417 and 500 I will shoot for the lower but won't stress if I go up to 500 - once I am over the panic about the number and have a group of foods I know and like for DD I will do the recommended only. I'm thinking that hat salsa will be my friend on DD - up it on a boiled egg yesterday and it was perfect.

Have managed the past 2 days to get my step goal (10,000) in - but since my house is already 85 (before 10 am) with ceiling fans, attic fan and window fans going I am wondering it if will happen today - I may try to break down my walking in place to lots of shorter groupings as long as I can -

Congratulations on the controlled DD and having a good plan in place for future success. Good work with the steps and again having a workable strategy to cope with your local heat. KUTGW

Okay, I'll try not to panic, and check out the link -- thank you! After my DD yesterday I was hoping to be back down to 185.6, but no such luck. 187.6. So 2 pounds coming from basically nowhere! Either that, or maybe the two DD's caused me to retain more of the calories I had on the UD. I won't try that again.

I've been reading the book and checking out as much information on this board as possible, and I'm still not sure if I should be measuring everything on the UD or just eat "normally." When I did measure, I had to eat more than normal to get all the calories in. I sure don't want to overeat and sabotage the plan!

And oh,yes, I am exercising on both UD and DD!

successful DD yesterday on a Friday! My calories were a little higher than normal 720, but I also ran 5K so I am forgiving the 220c.

Today is an UD and celebrating the fourth at the local festival, so works out perfectly!

Also hit a new low today! YAY!
