Start Date: 7/15/13
7/15 - 32 min outdoor cycling - 328 cals
7/16 - rest
7/17 - 40 min casual walking on treadmill - 200 cals
7/18 - 40 min outdoor cycling - 390 cals
7/19 - 34 min outdoor cycling - 277 cals

Do those of you who track cals burned with an HRM, do you notice that you burn less/your heart rate is a little lower on DD days? I would think it would be the opposite. When I first put my HR on, it was reading about 60 which surprised me. I'm not sure if it's on the fritz or if my body is trying to conserve energy from lack of calories so far today. Thoughts?

I've never really noticed a difference, but I also haven't really done very low DD's. I've always stayed above 400 and more often around 600. Also I tend to eat a couple of hours before I exercise so I'm seeing my heart rate after I've eaten something.

I have noticed slightly lower burn on DDs per my HRM. I just assumed I wasn't working as hard. I also take a beta blocker to control my HR, so I try to exercise near the 24 hour mark since my last dose. Otherwise, I can't get my HR high enough to do any good.

7/20 - 5 hour hike, 6 miles, it's hard to figure out, but it was pretty strenuous, the elevation change was about 1,000 feet. Hard to say without my HRM, but some internet sites estimate it about 1765 calories

It was a nice hike with lots of water falls, a natural water slide (which I did twice) and at the upper falls we went for a swim and took a shower under the falls. A nice day, and I met a bunch of new friends, didn't know anyone in the group of 20 that went so it was interesting meeting everyone and then had a very off diet dinner with one of them after.

7/19 - 30 minutes HIIT on treadmill (252 calories, 1.8 miles), 30 minutes walking
7/20 - 60 minutes on treadmill (3 miles, treadmill says 469 calories, UP says 378), 15 minute walk outside. Doing a lot more walking because of my UP band. Also I needed to burn off some extra calories today.

Update on HIIT: I've been doing HIIT 1-2 times a week for about a month or so, and in that time my maximum speed for the sprint part has increased from about 6.5 mph to 7.8 so I'm thinking it's working for fitness! Hopefully Dr. Mercola is right about the fat burning properties as well.

I requested two weight training books from the library (Starting Strength and The New Rules of Lifting for Women. I've been doing some machines and a little bit of dumbbells once a week for about 20-30 mins, but plan on getting more intentional about it with the discussion of preserving lean body mass.

Mike, your hike sounds fantastic!

I am totally sharing this tip with my dad! Seems like a no brainer, but just one of those things I've never thought about. He's on beta blockers too, and always complaining that he can't get his HR up for workouts. Thanks KeirasMom!

Any time. I'm on a pretty low dose (50mg Atenolol), and it seems to work well for me. The only problem is, I take it at night, so when I exercise, it's at night! Then I'm amped before bed.
