Today is DD, and as usual, I am having all kinds of trouble staying at 500. I thought I was doing ok, but had a blood sugar crash, and had to eat something. Am up to about 700.
Yes, I strongly agree about the strength training and its importance.

Ellen, 700kcals looks fine for a DD for you. I wonder if you might stop trying to restrict yourself to 500kcals on DDs for the present and accept that you can eat what you need on a DD up to a ceiling of 950kcals or so. You have a decent enough UD allowance to give you a swing even with that and you should still experience enough of the benefit that triggers the up/down regulation of various genes?

From lurking to writing

Hi folks

I thought I would come and join you by recording more of my journey on this daily thread.

I'm currently potato hacking for a few days as an experiment of one. I've lost a couple of pounds and haven't much of an appetite. The one sure thing I find is that if I can't bare the thought of another potato I'm just not hungry enough.

I find that with most food if I can't decide what I want to eat then I'm probably not that hungry. If I'm hungry it's as if my mind comes up with the perfect food without any hesitation it just knows.

One of the many things I love about the Juddders whose posts that I have read is they seem not to be afraid of experimenting.

Would I also be correct in thinking the Juddd crowd have a little bit of rebel in them as they are not afraid to find out what works and what doesn't? If they do then I definitely am in the right place.

I usually go at least once per day. I didn't go for 3 days after the "incident" and it about killed me.

Hello Rinkytinkpink. What a wonderful name!

Experimenting is, to some extent, the name of the game with JUDDD - unless you're lucky enough to find this WOE fits you like a glove from day one.

However, if you're a bit of a rebel, watch you don't find yourself wanting to rebel against JUDDD on DDs!

I've found JUDDD to be effective, sustainable and extremely forgiving.
I hope you enjoy a successful JUDDD journey too.

I can SO relate! I went to a gym for a while..mainly to do water aerobics, and my daughter worked there so I got a cheap membership...and the machines were very intimidating. I even had a session with a trainer, but she was only interested in getting me to sign on the dotted line so to speak. I joined the YMCA, again for water aerobics, but found they have a FREE coach system, and this time, I got properly trained on the machines. Then my husband started this free weight program.....and yes, I am a bit competitive.

If you get a chance, do a google search for stronglifts 5x5. His program is free, he just wants you to join his forum, which is not necessary. Its a very good program, and he has videos for form, etc. Its well spelled out. I follow his instructions fairly closely. If going to a gym is not an option, a kettlebell is pretty fun, and easy to get going on weights. I found tons of videos on utube for how to use kettlebells. And I bought one at my local sporting goods store for less than $20.

SLOW: Thanks for the suggestions on upping DD calories...I think you may be right. I just about find it impossible to keep to 500, but I lost 8 pounds last week, so I must have been doing something right! I go to the doctor Friday morning, and am planning on asking him to change my prescription to a lower dose of insulin, which should help with the crashes. Eventually, I am sure I will be able to get to the place that the 500 DD is doable. Right now, I am just uber excited to be having crashes...and weight loss! I am not afraid to deal with the short term problems for the long term benefits.

Today is an UD for me. I have half a pizza left from Saturday night calling to me... I am heading down to the big farmer's market this afternoon to stock up on veggies. I may buy a case of those Persian cucumbers!

You may be right about that rebel comment! I am a newbie too...only been doing JUDDD for a little over a week. So far, its been great.

I think you are spot on about the hunger issue...I remember some diet I did years ago (I think I have tried just about all of them!) that did say if you could not determine WHAT you were hungry for, you were probably not really hungry. That is a good guide for me, when I open the frig, and nothing 'appeals' I try and be disciplined enough to close the door and walk away.

What a deal Cindy! You do really well at those flea markets!

I made it to Walmart this morning and bought 4 new bras for $3.98 each. They fit me really well so I feel like that's quite a bargain. I tried on 16/18 pants and they fit pretty well, maybe just a bit big, but no way I'd get into the 12/14s.

However........I tried on a 12 dress and it fit! It was in no way flattering to me, but it wasn't the size, just the cut was weird on me. I also bought a cute little skirt in a 12/14 and it totally fits and I'm so excited! it was $14 and can definitely be taken in when the time comes, so I didn't feel bad about spending the money. I never thought I'd be in 12s or 14s yet. I'm psyched!

I'll try and get a decent picture of me in the skirt and post for you guys to see.

That's wonderful LCG!!! I'm so jealous! I STILL can't get into 14s~! Much less 12's. I can (barely) button my 14 jeans, but I couldn't wear them around the house comfortably, much less sit in them lol. I can get my 12 skirt up, but the zipper is about 1/2 foot apart.

So glad you found some good things, and in much smaller sizes!!

Thanks Cindy!

Well, I'm bigger on the bottom, so I'm not in 12s or 14s in pants or jeans, and I have the feeling this particular skirt is pretty forgiving, but I'll take it! I'll just have to be patient about other brands not being sized quite like this. I still want to do some shopping in actual clothing stores, but won't have time for that right away. So the experiment will continue...

For some reason, 12/14 was the best shopping experience for me! It was better than getting into 18s and not having to shop in the plus sizes anymore. It was better than 10s. 8s were pretty good and 6s even better (most of my stuff is still 8s), but 12/14 made me feel like I had really "arrived." I hope you get as great a feeling as I did!

I had a blinding headache last night after a reasonably good UD when I only ate dinner, and 3 glasses of rosé. Had to go to bed early after taking paracetamol and ibobrufen. Slept okay but was awoken by a colossal thunder storm, I wonder if that had something to do with it. I seldom have headaches.

Had a good DD though and felt fine. I am not used to being anything but above par.

Talking of shopping bargains, I have been looking for a hat to wear to a wedding on Saturday. They are such a silly expense. So I trawled the charity shops today and found one I really like for only £10, less than a 10th of the store prices. And next week I shall take it back and they can make some more money for the charity. Win, win.

Oh, I'm sorry you had that awful headache Cindy! I'll bet it had something to do with the barometric pressure changing. Glad it's gone on its way now.

I am fascinated with you British women and hats. Never having been a chapeau girl myself (other than a ball cap occasionally - tomboy alert!) I can't even imagine what I'd look like in a hat. I'd love to see you in your hat!

Oh, I adore hats. Mostly baseball caps (tomboy here, too!), but I have a couple of cute wool or straw hats, too. I've actually been thinking about growing my hair out again, just so I can wear hats without looking like a guy!

Cindy, I love that you found a good deal, and it's going right back to the charity shop when you're done. Fantastic!

Sorry Sirain, must be headace hangover! I am not usually that slow on the uptake.

I am so useless at adding photos Carol, but I will try once more tomorrow. It is only at weddings as a rule these days, and not at less formal ones. I love a hat myself.

WOE: JUDDD
Start Date: July 2013
Its been a busy day and I am all tuckered out! It was an UD, and I made the most of it...but stayed a couple hundred below my 2500 ceiling. Even so, I feel stuffed! I made Indian food for dinner, and it just was very very filling....

I went to the really cool farmer's market today and stocked up on veggies and good stuff for DDs. And the PB2 is supposed to arrive tomorrow! Yay!

Was excited to hear about the new Royal Baby...

Heading to bed! Good night!

Hunger...

Yes indeed you are bang on the mark with that one Ellen and of course if we eat at the fridge we pull up a chair...who said that now? I think it was Geneen Roth.

I have been doing Juddd naturally for many years on and off so when I came across this wonderful support forum I lurked for a while and then decided to become more active. I love making friends across the world.

I look forward to hearing about your journey.x

Rebel with a cause...

Ahh I just lost my post!!!

Oh well... I'll start again.

Thanks Flossyliz, I find I love my DD days as something wonderful happens most of the time in so much as I feel calm, peaceful and happy when I don't eat for most of the day and have my small but lovely meal later in the day.

I have been doing this WOE naturally on and off for much of my life before IF became more mainstream...I just found if I ate enough I just didn't want to eat much the next day. For years I forced myself to eat 3-6 times a day because it was suggested it was the 'best' way of eating.

As an Eating Analyst I help people trouble shoot and change their behaviour around eating and I thought I better walk my talk if i was suggesting eating regular meals. As I went on though I realised that everyone is different and we need to become our own private investigators. Including myself.

I'm shaking my own diet up at the moment as although I am at a healthy weight middle age is hitting me fast and hard. I love entering into this new phase of my life but I have noticed gravity is taking hold.

In my job I need to be looking fairly fit and most importantly I need to be feeling OK with my body. This can be difficult some days as I have recovered from an eating disorder so I have to be careful not to let the voice of doom creep in, loving myself has been a long and hard journey. I'm sure some of you may relate!

Anyway...as an experiment I recently tried the potato hack...I lasted 3 days! Yesterday I felt really off colour and shaky after my meal and I was missing the peace and calm off my DD.

So yesterday I changed my food up a bit so I had an UD adding in a few more nutrients and I feel much better I can feel the calm of my DD returning.

I think I will try the potato hack again but with salad and greens next time. I was doing pots only before. I know the idea of the 'tater hack is to be spiking the insulin to burn more fat, but I didn't like the feel of it and I LIKE FEEL GOOD

Thank you to those who welcomed me and I look forward to posting more of the journey and learning from you seasoned Juddders.

Kerry
