crazy hunger killer--Crio Bru

so someone gifted me with a bag of Crio Bru. It is pulverized cocoa beans that brew just like coffee (you have to use a gold filter or a french press). Says on the bag 10 calories/1.5 carbs per cup, and no caffeine but a boatload of antioxidants.

It also says it curbs appetite, and I am here to tell you that this is true for me! It also smells like a wonderful cup of cocoa, and with a teeny bit of coconut creamer and a few drops of stevia it is awesome. Like a blend between coffee and cocoa.

It is crazy pricey, like 11 bucks a bag, so i don't know if I would go buy it for myself, but then again I might!

LoCarbGal 06-14-2013 10:37 AM

Never heard of this before, but it sounds really good. And anything that suppresses the appetite is definitely a gift. Enjoy Ouiz!

deedee 06-14-2013 10:44 AM

This sounds really interesting. I have been cutting coffee to one cup a day to see if it helps with reflux issues, I wonder if I could have this. I could see as much AS as I can get!

Is it sold at regular coffee shops or do you need to go to a specialty store?

Luv2Eat 06-14-2013 10:52 AM

Yum, that sounds very good! :yummy:

dawnyama 06-14-2013 11:01 AM

Thanks ouiz for letting us know about this. Most fascinating!!! Deedee I just googled and the nearest coffee shop that has it in my area is 177 miles away. Online ordering for me if I decide I must try it.

ouizoid 06-14-2013 11:02 AM

I looked this morning in my local market (where I know my friend bought it) and it was 11.50 for 12 ounces which is about 4 bucks less than amazon. Maybe it is now being carried in health food stores--it is great! It definitely gives me energy (but not that wired coffee energy--I think it must be the theobromines in the cocoa beans)

deedee 06-14-2013 11:35 AM

Thanks Dawn and ouizoid! I'll check at Whole Foods today and see if they have it.

MintQ8 06-14-2013 11:58 AM

Keirasmom, Dawn should read this!

ouizoid 06-14-2013 12:07 PM

this stuff is soooo yummy. After making a pot and enjoying a couple of cups, I put the rest in the fridge. When cold, I added 1/2 cup sf vanilla milk, 1 tsp cocoa dissolved in hot water, sweetener, and 3 ice cubes and blended. Wow! I wonder if you bought cacao beans and pulverized in a coffee grinder if it would taste the same???

KeirasMom 06-14-2013 01:16 PM

Off to Google. Sounds great! I just saw an episode of Anthony Bourdain last night in Peru, and he had something very similar. Apparently, that's how the ancient civilizations consumed cocoa (no sweetener or anything), so something like this was already at the back of my mind.

luvmyzoe 06-14-2013 04:46 PM

Wow, this sounds like amazing stuff! I'm off to my local Whole Foods to find it!

KeirasMom 06-14-2013 04:54 PM

Not listed at Whole Foods that I can find. Let us know if you find it there. I searched on the Crio Bru site and the closest location is about 3 hours away. :( I texted DH to let him know if he ever feels like getting me a gift, that would be a good one, wink, wink, nudge, nudge. ;)

Librarygirl 06-14-2013 06:03 PM

Sounds amazing. :) I already can guess that it's not available in my area, as few things are lol. It 1might be something I will purchase online though. Thanks for another great tip, ouzioid!

deedee 06-14-2013 06:20 PM

They didn't have it at my Whole Foods unfortunately.

Librarygirl 06-14-2013 06:31 PM

Nearest place to me is 3 hours away in another state lol. Looks like coffee houses, mostly.

mttemple4 06-14-2013 09:23 PM

Thanks, Ouis!

I thought the same as Dawn--watched that Bourdain episode on the TiVo today. Lol!

SlowSure 06-15-2013 01:59 AM

I can't see it in the UK. Googling around for roasted coffee beans, I was surprised to see that
Chocolate Alchemy
has a selection of 6 'brewing cocoa' as she categorises them, as well as roasted cocoa beans and nibs (from various threads it seems as if you can grind your cocoa beans to make something similar (as long as they've been pre-roasted, similarly for nibs).

I think I can purchase nibs in the UK so this may be worth an expt. - thank you:)

Kismet311 06-15-2013 05:13 AM

Wow, I found a place that sells it near me...well, technically near me if I use my GPS LOL but I'm sure I can find it. I'm guessing it's a Health Food Store. When I'm off from work (for 2 whole weeks!) I will check it out!

Yup! NC for us. Maybe we should do a road trip :hyst:

Bromines? Ouch. Didn't I read that's not good for the thyroid? Hate to be a downer - maybe I'm wrong! But if it works by being heavy on the bromines I'd be a little scared of it (personally, because of my own history - others would probably do fine). Of course, I love chocolate... ... not sure.

Sounds like a plan, GF! We would definitely need it by the time we got there! :D We could get a few sample cups for the road home. ;)

Oh gee, that sent me on a search for information. I found articles claiming that theobromine was beneficial to thyroid function, and others that said it was bad, along with caffeine and coconut oil. Sheesh. :stars:

KeirasMom 06-15-2013 09:31 AM

I just got back from Whole Foods. I found Wonderslim Wondercocoa. It's not the same. It's a powder, but it's made from 100% roasted cocoa beans--no other ingredients, so I'm hoping for a similar effect. It's 20 calories per T. I mixed 1 T with 1 C hot water, then added hazelnut Splenda. Not half bad. I already had breakfast and it's an UD, so I don't know if I'll get an accurate feel for the AS qualities, but I figure it's worth a try. It was $5.99 for 6 oz of the powder and can be used in baking as well as for hot cocoa.

LoCarbGal 06-15-2013 10:03 AM

The Whole Foods in town do have it, but it's across town. If I'm in that neck of the woods I'll have to swing by and try it.

ouizoid 06-15-2013 10:29 AM

ya know, I am super hypothyroid. Avoided all the "bad foods" for years, and finally got sick of doing so. I have been adding back in all the verboten foods: soy in the form of tofu, all the goitrogenic veggies like broccoli/cauli, cabbage and brussel sprouts, etc.

I get my thyroid tested every 3 mo and so far so good. I am going to keep seeing how it goes. I guess I got rebellious!

Carly 06-15-2013 11:50 AM

My birthday is in July so I sent DW a link to website.

I found it listed on UKebay although it is expensive with postage from the US! Looks good though :)

I've been a little extra hungry lately and I love chocolate, so when I found out that a Health Food store near me carried this stuff, I went down today and splurged on a bag. I'm drinking my first cup as I write this. Taste = amazing  with complex chocolaty flavors. I put cream and truvia in it.

I'll let you know about any appetite suppresion/energy later. It's 2:25 and I've only had coffee with cream today so far, so I'm a little hungry now.

ouizoid 06-15-2013 02:41 PM

even without its alleged appetite killing properties (pretty good for me) the taste alone is worth the splurge!!

Seabreezes 06-15-2013 04:47 PM

Which Crio Bru do you have? There are several on Amaz...

Thanks
